Seon Deok’s attention flits between them both. “Right now? But why—?”

“The Fenris Chain was broken,” Dae Wong says gruffly. “I’d advise you inform the King’s Hand shamans immediately. We’ll need all the help we can get.” The king glances at his son. “Come, Jae Hwa.”

The men rush out of the room, leaving Seon Deok alone with Sul Li. Seon Deok strokes the white pup’s back. “I’ll be back soon, little one.” The noblewoman hurries out of the room.

The air in the shadowy corner shimmers. Then it blackens into a solid feline shape. One of the panther’s ears swivels towards the door. No one is coming.

  Perfect.

She slinks up to the crib’s wall and opens her jaws, tasting the pup’s sweet milky scent. Low growl seething from her, she splays her curved claws. Just looking at the helpless thing makes her sick.

She shifts into human form and reaches into her red Wing of Heaven tunic for a black-linked chain. The Magus Panther reappears on the back of her hand, lifting its head in interest.

She slips the dark chain around the pup’s neck. It starts to pulse. The chain worms into her snowy fur like a parasite.

Sul Li jerks at the contact, tiny limbs stretching feebly. She whimpers.

But the chain only eats deeper and deeper into Sul Li’s body until it melds with her skin.

And until she falls deathly still.

  Acknowledgements

First things first, I’d like to thank Karen Parker because without her I simply cannot English (and even after her help, I still can’t English). The amount of time and dedication that she put in to helping me develop this novel is god-level. Not just into the book, but the soundtrack as well.

I’d also like to thank Professor Wolfgram for tolerating my presence in her office while I asked buttloads of questions. She’s probably the real-life Mai without the mafia/ yelling/ guilt about people dying part.

I’d like to thank my family because without them I would obviously not exist.

I’d also like to thank the Macbook I’m writing this on right now because God knows this thing has been threatening to give out for months now, and I’m sincerely glad that it decided to hold on. Hopefully, it will get to retire in peace soon.

And finally, I’d like to thank you dear reader for buying (and hopefully enjoying) this book. It truly means a lot that people can finally do so.
