The Moments Between

by Christina J Thompson

The Moments Between is a work of speculative Christian fiction that seeks to challenge commonly-held, black-and-white ideas regarding death and salvation, including those of ‘mortal sin’, while at the same time serving as a reminder of Christ’s limitless mercy and love. This book is presented as a work of fiction, but upon reaching the final chapter, my hope is that readers find themselves considering the possibility that it may actually be real. We do not know what happens in the final moments as life leaves us, and the God I know will do anything to save the ones He loves.

To be clear, this story is not meant to suggest in ANY way that suicide is acceptable to God or without eternal consequence, and it is my sincere prayer that those considering suicide seek help. Rather, the purpose of my book is to encourage readers – especially those who have lost a loved one – to realize that there may be possibilities outside the scope of traditional thinking and imagination that still align with the fundamental teachings of the Bible. Our God is limitless, and this story describes just one of many ways in which He could choose to save someone from eternal death.

The concept behind my book has been an important part of my life and has, in a way, made me who I am. When my sister-in-law committed suicide and I became a parent to two broken, motherless children, it is what gave me the hope and strength to let go of my own pain so that I could focus on helping them through theirs. I feel that this idea was given to me as a message to share with others, which is why I decided to write my book.

More importantly, this story is meant to prompt readers to realize that it is not given to us to know whether a loved one has gone to heaven or hell. We tend to find both comfort and torment in guessing the eternal destination of those we’ve lost, but the true comfort should lie in knowing that our God is faithful and just. If we truly trust Him, then we must do our best to trust that He will not fail do everything in His power to keep from losing His children. This is easier said than done, but it is the truth.

My hope is to change people’s lives through The Moments Between, and to perhaps provide a little comfort in the face of a question that can never be answered in this life. This book is intense and heartbreaking, but the message is clear: while He is not willing that any should perish, it is and always will be our choice to make.

I am grateful beyond words for the opportunity to share this story with even a single reader. From the bottom of my heart: thank you.
