  Putting the car in reverse she tried to get it back onto the road, for a moment she thought it was working, and then she slipped back into the ditch. She repeated the same procedure three times before realising it was no good, this wasn’t going to work. Looking out of the window she could see the wolf standing watching.

  Tara needed for him to turn back into his human form so she could discuss with him what she should do now. Walking down the mountain might be her only way home; she didn’t feel safe flagging another car down, not after the previous night’s events.

  Getting out of the car she knew he must have had the same thought, because after standing listening, presumably to ensure there were no witnesses nearby, he shimmered into his incredibly toned human form. Tara took a long lingering look at him, and then tried to snap her brain back to the problem of her car.

  “I can’t move it, it’s stuck.” She turned to look at the wheel.

  “What if I push from this side?” he said, pointing to the side of the car.

  “That might work, I thought I nearly had it, so a little extra oomph might do it.”

  She ran back around the car, and jumped in. Once in reverse she gave him a nod and he pushed the car back. His strength, even as a human, was phenomenal; the car lurched backwards, gaining a grip on the road.

  She grinned at him, and then let it drop from her face. This meant they would be parting; she had to go back to her life. People there would worry about her, in fact they probably already were. In one last attempt she got out the car and faced him.

  “Please, get in the car with me. Give it a try, you might like living with me.”

  The look in his eyes was one of agony, she knew how much he wanted to, but also that he was too scared. Not scared of other people, scared of losing control, something that had never mattered out here. He was a creature of the forest now. At least in his own eyes. Tara simply saw the man she wanted to share her life with. Her mate.

  “Tara, please. Go. Forget me.”

  “Will you forget me?”

  “No, of course not.”

  “But you think so little of me that you expect me to forget you?”

  “It’s better this way, you are better off without me.”

  “That should be my dec...” She stopped, before her eyes he changed into the wolf and with one last look at her ran off into the forest.

  Tears streamed down her eyes, she was upset but mainly angry with him for leaving her like that. Not even a proper goodbye, she gritted her teeth and started her slow journey back home.

  It was dark under the trees, but more than once she glanced into the forest on either side of her and was certain a big wolf followed her, making sure she got home safely.

  Reaching her apartment she parked the car and went to the front door. Before she could let herself in her neighbour's door opened and light spilled out.

  “God, Tara, where have you been? Your mother called by earlier and was worried no one had seen you. I think she was going to call the police.”

  “The police?” Great that was all she needed. “Thanks, Vicky. I’ll go and call her now.”

  “OK.” Her neighbour turned to go in, and then turned back. “You are OK aren't you?”

  “Yes. Why do you ask?”

  “Well, look at your clothes.”

  Tara looked down at what she was wearing. “Oh. Yeah. I had car trouble, but someone helped me out. I got a bit wet and muddy.”

  Vicky obviously thought she had done her bit to make sure Tara was not hurt or in trouble. Tara knew Vicky probably had her boyfriend waiting for her, and so was pleased when she didn’t hang around to ask any more questions. Letting herself in she tried to decide what to do, all she really wanted was a shower and sleep.

  Two hours later she collapsed into bed. She had phoned her mother and reassured her everything was fine, the story about car trouble seemed to be believable enough. The police also came to see her, checking her story out once more.

  Tara had decided it was safest to leave the bit about being driven off the road, and then chased, out of it. The last thing she wanted was for anyone to know about Josh, he had made his decision and Tara did not want him to suffer any consequences on her behalf.

  So after a wonderful warm shower and some food, she was ready to fall asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow. But as she switched off the light, there was a knock at the door. It was a faint sound, first of all she thought she had been imagining it, and then it came again, louder this time.

  Getting up she pulled a robe on, praying it wasn’t the police with more questions. She looked at the clock; it was two in the morning. No one else would be at her door at this time.

  Then her blood ran cold. What if the two men who attacked her had found out who she was and where she lived and had come after her?

  Her heart raced as she stood next to the door and asked, “Who is it?”

  There was a pause, and she nearly turned tail and went back to bed. Then Josh's voice answered, “It’s me, please let me in.”

  Despite trembling fingers she opened the door and almost dragged him in. “Oh, I can’t believe you came.”

  He wrapped his arms around her and breathed in her scent. “I couldn’t let you go. Watching your car disappear was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. Then it became so unbearable I had to follow you, so I knew where you were.”

  “How long have you been outside?”

  “A while.” He looked embarrassed. “I didn’t know how pleased you would be to see me.”

  “Josh, you have no idea.” Tara looked at him, they had said enough, now all she wanted was to have this man in her bed.

  She took him by the hand and led him to her bedroom. There she helped him remove his clothes and he undid her robe. For a few minutes they stroked and caressed each other, making sure the other was real, they were together again.
