She rolled her eyes. “Fine. Whatever.”
“There can be only one king to rule them all,” he said, raising his chin and looking down at her.
“I don’t care,” she said looking past him to the trailer. “You can be king of the recycling.”
“I am king of the recycling,” he said.
The door opened and Joni gulped. She held her breath. Her brain was pounding, drowning out all of Garth’s seemingly planned king speech.
Mason walked out of his trailer dressed like a firefighter. “Mamma Mia” she muttered under her breath as she watched him. He moved like a panther.
He was looking at a paper, mouthing the words as he strutted away. He disappeared behind a trailer and Joni gasped for air, only realizing now that she hadn’t taken a breath since he opened the door.
“And then all of the cans and bottles will bow down to me…” Garth blabbed on.
Joni looked back to his trailer. I have to get a hidden camera set up in there. She shook her head dismissing another of her crazy ideas. Or was it genius?
She turned back to Garth, in the middle of his soliloquy, and frowned. How do I get rid of this guy?
“Can,” she said, pointing behind him.
“It’s mine,” he yelled, running away in the direction of her finger.
She rolled her eyes and hurried away.
Joni was lurking around Mason’s trailer after lunch, touching it every so often with her finger and smiling. Lucky trailer. She had never been so jealous of a motor vehicle before.
The actors were filming a scene in the forest a few miles away and Joni wasn’t allowed anywhere near the area so she just walked around looking at the filming equipment, avoiding Garth, snooping around Mason’s trailer and picking up the occasional empty water bottle.
She looked at her watch and sighed. Still three more hours until her shift was over.
“Oh Snapple,” she cursed under her breath as Garth walked by. He was carrying a full garbage bag in each hand over his shoulder. He glared at her as he pumped them in the air, working his fat triceps.
“Where’s your crown?” she asked.
“It’s coming,” he said, glaring at her as he walked away.
She turned around, rolling her eyes. A flash of metal caught her eye under the trailer.
“You’re about to be dethroned king,” she said to herself as she reached under the trailer for the Diet Coke can underneath.
She grabbed it and was about to dump it into her bag when a wasp flew out of the hole and stung her on her finger.
“Ow!” she screamed, dropping the bag and sticking her finger in her mouth. The cans made a racket as they rolled onto the floor.
Her finger was burning as the asshole wasp flew away. She gave it the middle finger and cursed at it as it left the scene of the crime.
“Are you okay?” a soft voice asked her.
Her eyes went wide behind her crooked glasses as Mason Maloney knelt down beside her and gently took her finger in his strong, rugged hands.
“I hate these things,” he said, his voice purring like a tiger.
She stared at him in shock. His eyes were focused on her finger giving her carte blanche to admire his strong jaw, his dazzling brown eyes and his messy brown hair speckled with strands of gray.
Say something!
“I got stung by a wasp.”
Not that! Something clever!
“His name was Jeff.”
Joni closed her eyes, wanting to crawl under the trailer and die. Talk about blown first impressions.
“You can never trust a Jeff,” he said, his lips curving into the beginnings of a smile. Their eyes met and his face became serious.
I guess he only flirts with perfect 10’s. He was a movie star after all. And she was a 6.3. Maybe a 6.8 on a good day.
He looked back down at her finger, his cheeks turning a slight crimson color.
“Jeff forgot his stinger,” he said. “It has to come out.”
Her fingertip was burning more with each slowly passing second. It took everything she had not to cry in front of her lifelong crush and the thought of squeezing out the stinger was going to open up the waterworks.
“Can’t I just cut my finger off instead?” she asked.
He chuckled. “I’ll be gentle. I promise.”
“Okay,” she whispered, getting dizzy. Was it from him or from the wasp sting?
Joni closed her eyes and tried to focus on her breathing. Her body was tense waiting for the sharp pain as he yanked out the stinger.
“All done,” he whispered.
She opened her eyes in shock. “I didn’t feel a thing.”
“Mason Maloney always keeps his promises,” he said, flashing her a perfect smile. He brought her throbbing index finger to his lips and kissed it.
Holy fuck balls. He was worth-stalking hot. And even more so dressed as a fireman.
“Better?” he asked.
She just stared at him like an idiot.
If only the horrible girls from high school could see this. Eat your heart out Candice Brighton.
The director appeared out of nowhere ruining their moment. “Rewrites,” he said shoving a stack of paper into Mason’s face.
“Again?” he asked. “I just learned the other lines.”
“Well learn these ones,” he said. “And fast. We shoot in an hour.”
The director walked away as Mason flipped through the pages biting his lip.
Lucky teeth, Joni thought, staring at them as they grazed his bottom lip.
“Great. With Gisella,” he mumbled as he scanned the new script.
Joni finally found her voice. “Should I get Gisella so you guys can rehearse?” she asked.
They both turned towards his hot costar sitting at the hair station. Her hair dresser was holding back tears as Gisella scolded her.
“I said outward curls not inward curls you dolt,” she hissed. “Now do it right or I’ll make sure that you’ll never cut hair again. You won’t even be able to get a job sheering sheep after I’m through with you!”
Mason and Joni looked back at each other and laughed. “Can you read?” he asked.
“I have read before yes,” she answered.
“Come,” he said, standing up and offering his hand to her.
She looked at his strong, outstretched hand and gulped. Even his hands are sexy. She slid her hand in his and he pulled her up.
He opened the door to his trailer and turned to her. “You’re going to read with me.”
She looked down at the garbage bag in her hand. “But the recycling…”
He took the bag from her and tossed it to the side. “Don’t worry about it,” he said before disappearing inside the trailer.
Joni nearly had a panic attack right then and there. Mason Maloney just invited her into his trailer.
Don’t sweat, she begged her body. Please don’t sweat.
She walked up the two steps slowly, reached back and closed the door.
Garth ran over and snatched her garbage bag off of the ground. “Another one for the king,” he called out.
