The Shadow's Code

“Right, well… I will speak to upstairs.” He clipped his chin between his thumb and index finger. “Bloody yanks,” Neil said, staring at a picture on the wall.
“Neil, I trust you will keep me as an anonymous source? The young man in the recording is my friend,” Chris said.
“Of course, but I will need a copy of that recording. Good to see your loyalty still lies with the Crown, old chap,” Neil said. Chris nodded and slipped a copy of the recording over the desk in a brown envelope. He stood and stretched out a hand.
“Good speaking to you again, Neil.”
“Take care, Chris,” Neil said, sliding the envelope from the desk into his top draw. Chris turned towards the door. A silver photo frame caught his eye as he was about to leave.
Inside it were the words he had lived by: ‘Fair is foul and foul is fair’.
Author’s Note
‘It is not the bright lights, fast cars or cyber space that make the moment. It is something much smaller than giant glass buildings and projector screens. Our greatest asset is our body and our mind. That is what makes an atmosphere.’
This has been a long project for me and I really hope it has been an enjoyable read. Nuclear weapons systems and covert operations are certainly not my background and so those that are privy to such details and spot my errors please forgive my mistakes. Any part of this book that is close to reality is purely by chance. Weaving a story of conspiracies and escape has been an enjoyable endeavor that started by note taking whilst spending a year in Australia. Back then the title was going to be either ‘Hideout’, ‘The Getaway’ or ‘The Code’ and Lindon Scott was very nearly named Sean Denison. Those notes were slowly transformed into the book you read today and I hope the escapism I experienced whilst on the other side of the world shines through. Although I have embedded a story that is keen to mistrust technology and highlight it’s pitfalls I must admit that this book would simply not have been possible without the ‘knowledge at our fingertips’ generation of technology we live in. The challenge was sorting the content that is accurate and trustworthy from those desperate to squeeze out their personal views with little concern for the mistruths and confusion they spread. This is a challenge that we all face and I hope that someday, as a society we are able to overcome such issues. Unlike most of this book the story of Nagasaki is sadly very real (apart the conspiracy I have crafted about the third plane’s mission and subsequent bomb drop on the Emperor’s gardens). Although it is usually overshadowed by Hiroshima, it was a devastated city nonetheless. Its fate was decided by something as trivial as low cloud cover at the intended drop zone. I have not had the good fortune of visiting Japan yet however whilst writing this book my desire to go there has only grown.
The background and researching I did for this book was aided by the help of friends and family. I will not name names as they are all much too humble however, I owe a special Thank You to the ones that helped me with realistic military titles, and told me about out-of-the-way parts of the world and shared their personal life stories or gave me inspiration for characters. I also owe a Thank You to my Grandfather for his tireless efforts in proofreading my work so that it is clear and comprehensible.
Finally, this book will not be my last and there may even be a return for Lindon one day. It has been a steep learning curve and hopefully my work shall only get more enjoyable in my future titles.
