For a split second, Mattie wanted to tell her to fuck off. He had wanted this particular big change for months. And now that he had a glimmer of hope of getting it, she wanted him to dig his heels in? Not bloody likely! Brushing that thought aside, he recognized that she was only looking out for his best interest so he smiled and agreed to take things slow. Like hell! But he could pretend.
Dr. Elliot walked him out, hugged him then reiterated what she had said during their session. “Remember what I said Mattie, concentrate on your continued progress and don’t make too many unnecessary changes in your life right now, okay?” She held him by the shoulders, looking up into his eyes and waited for him to agree. Lips spread in a thin line, Mattie managed a nod before leaning down so she could kiss his cheek. She spoke with Andrew for a few minutes before waving bye again and heading back into her office.
Victor and Andrew didn’t talk much on the ride back out to Mamaroneck. They stopped for Brazilian takeout and aside from asking Mattie what he wanted and placing their order, it was unnerving silence. Victor didn’t even have the decency to turn the radio on so Mattie could have a nervous breakdown with background music. He knew they were considering what Dr. Elliot had said, he just hoped that when they got home and finished dinner, the quiet men in the front seat would open their mouths and have the conversation with Mattie that he wasn’t supposed to know about.
No such luck. By the time Mattie crawled into bed that night he was fuming. And most of the next day he walked around in a funk; he would snap at anyone that dared to speak to him. Victor though, he did not snap, he barked, loudly. While Mattie was nursing his wounds from the verbal lashing Victor handed him, Goddamn bastard, can’t even chastise me in English! Mattie decided it was time to take matters into his own hands. He wasn’t quite sure how until Ricardo plopped down on the couch in Victor’s office next to him, his arm draped across the back of the couch, coincidentally behind Mattie’s head.
Ricardo was talking about an outdoor concert that weekend, Mattie thought he was asking him to go with, but what really caught Mattie’s attention was the look on Victor’s face. Victor sat behind his desk, lip curled up into a snarl, face a lovely shade of rose, staring not at Mattie and Ricardo but at Ricardo’s arm. He looked away only long enough to grab his cell phone and pound it with his big, meaty fingers to the point Mattie was shocked it didn’t fall apart in his lap, before looking up again. Mattie could swear Victor was growling and it was taking an awful lot of concentration not to laugh. Then Andrew was there asking Ricardo to come help Jordan get something set up for a scene.
Ricardo was almost out the door and Victor was allowing some color to return to his face when Ricardo turned back around and spoke once more. “Oh yeah, Jordan and I are going to the game tonight. Kory was supposed to go with but he ditched, you want the ticket?”
Mattie did a sweep of the room before accepting. Victor had all but stopped breathing, his face now a deep shade of crimson, and Andrew stared at Ricardo, wide eyed and open mouthed. Mattie giggled, clearing his throat in an attempt to cover up the laugh. “Yeah, sure, sounds fun. What time?”
“An hour tops. You can just go straight from here with us to the stadium.”
“Sounds perfect.” Mattie all but purred when he said it.
It was two in the morning by the time Mattie made it back home and he wasn’t the least bit surprised to see Victor and Andrew had waited up for him.
“How was date?” Victor enunciated the word date as one would spit out a sour grape.
Mattie considered his answer for a moment before voicing it. He could allow Victor to think it was a date, but there was the danger of his head exploding and blowing the roof off the house, so Mattie decided to give the poor man a break. “I had fun, but it wasn’t a date. The Yankees won.” Mattie could see both Victor and Andrew’s unhappy expressions through the glass paned back door when he turned to hang his coat on the coat rack. Turning, he smiled at them both, “You didn’t have to wait up. I think I’ll head up to bed though, I’m tired.”
“Actually, Victor and I wanted to talk to you Mattie.” Andrew looked forlorn and as much fun as Mattie was having with this, that look got him, so he nodded and followed the two men into the den.
Victor tried talking first, but he was stumbling over his words, they came out in a broken ménage of English and Romanian, so Andrew kindly spoke for them. “What Vic is trying to say Mattie is that he and I have talked about it, and thought long and hard about it for a while now. We both care for you deeply and not out of any sense of duty or honor, but from a place of love.” Andrew paused briefly, stealing a glance at Victor who just nodded for him to continue. “We wanted to know if you would like to take your glaring attempts at flirtation to the next level, with both of us.” Andrew sat and anxiously awaited Mattie’s response. Mattie just stared down into his lap for a long while before lifting his head and meeting Andrew’s eyes. Those puppy dog brown eyes of Mattie’s were full of unshed tears.
“Do you know how long I have wanted to hear you say that? How long I’ve waited to hear those words?” Mattie looked pained and Andrew was about to draw him into a hug, but Mattie leaned in and kissed him. It was soft and gentle at first but the moment Mattie ran the tip of his tongue over Andrew’s bottom lip, he opened up and sucked Mattie’s tongue into his mouth.
“I take that as yes.” Victor chuckled and Mattie released his hold on Andrew, turning his body so he could reach Victor. Mattie reached out and grabbed the much bigger man by the neck, pulling his mouth down and latching on. Mattie lost track of how long they sat there on the couch kissing, touching, caressing. He had kissed and been kissed more in the last few minutes than he had throughout his entire life. Each kiss was different, clarifying the slight differences between the two men he had chosen as partners. Victor was fierce and demanding and that reflected in his kiss. But he held on to Mattie as one would hold a crystal ball or fine china, caressing him gently with fingers and hands, very unlike his kiss.
Andrew was an angel. He made love to Mattie’s mouth with his tongue, gliding the tip along Mattie’s bottom lip as if asking permission and when Mattie opened up he would gently probe the inside of Mattie’s mouth with that magical tongue. And then the world stopped moving for a fraction of a second when Victor’s tongue decided to join in the magic. Mattie wasn’t even sure how the hell the three of them were kissing each other, at the same time, but they made it work.
Before he remembered what happened the last time someone was touching him and he closed his eyes, Mattie closed his eyes. But unlike that time, his mind wasn’t assaulted with visions of the past, all he could see were Victor and Andrew smiling at him. Mattie jerked back and gasped, eyes wide, staring at Victor then Andrew in turn. Victor was scowling and Andrew held tight to Mattie’s arm, the concern radiated off their bodies. “Did we hurt you?” Andrew whispered.
“No, no you didn’t. I just…” Mattie was trying to find the right words to say, he didn’t want to say what he was thinking and put a damper on the mood, but he also never wanted to lie to Victor and Andrew. “I was just thinking about that day with Jordan and how every time I closed my eyes I could see that night, what happened on the beach instead of Jordan.”
“Oh god, Mattie.” Andrew sighed and Victor tried to pull away to stand.
Mattie latched onto them, grabbing one of each man’s hands with his own, holding on tight. “Wait. Listen to me before you freak out. Just now, when I was kissing you, both of you, I closed my eyes, and you know what? I did not see it, I only saw you two. You guys, you make it all better.”
This time when Mattie laid his head on Andrew’s chest and cried, it was tears of joy. When he pulled back and looked into those blue eyes that had made him feel safe since the first time he looked into them, he saw no contempt or pity, only love, compassion and understanding. It literally took his breath away and the only reaction Mattie could show was to lean in and kiss Andrew again.
When they parted, Andrew
sat back on the couch while Mattie settled in between him and Victor. “Okay, if we are going to do this there has to be some rules, guidelines if you will, before we go any further. And I think we all should have input in what those rules are.”
Victor and Mattie both agreed with Andrew. “First and foremost, I think we should take things slow. We need to learn how to communicate as a working… what, not couple... throuple?”
Andrew said it sort of joking, but Mattie laughed and nodded enthusiastically. “Okay, we need to learn how to communicate with each other for starters. Victor and I have been together so long Mattie, that we can finish each other’s sentences. I think it’s important that we build on that foundation for the three of us as well.”
“And no secrets, we are having to be honest and sincere with each other, always.” Victor chimed in. “No matter even if it is something that you think we do not want to hear. Honesty Matthew, always honesty.”
“Okay, I agree with what you guys are saying, but you have to do some things for me too. I won’t be treated like or looked at as a victim, a child or a blushing virgin. I know I’m young but I want to you to treat me like a partner, an equal.” Mattie hoped he did not sound like a child demanding their respect. But if he was fixing to enter into the complexity of a relationship with two men, two older men, he had to know from the start that he would be treated as an equal.
“Sounds fair.” Andrew agreed. “But you will need to be patient with us Mattie. You’ve been through so much, I hope you don’t think that Victor and I are going to take you upstairs and fuck you senseless tonight. I meant what I said when I said we would take our time. And besides that, we don’t want you in our lives just as another body to warm or bed. We could find that anywhere. No, there is something about you specifically that calls to both of us, do you understand what I’m saying here Mattie?” Andrew asked.
While Mattie did understand what Andrew was saying, there was a pang of disappointment in his heart. Did he expect them to consummate their relationship five minutes after it began? Not really. But Andrew was making it sound like it would take as long as it had taken them to even admit they wanted him at all before they would allow Mattie into their bed.
Mattie would soon learn how wrong he was about the sleeping arrangements. And though he had just asked that Victor and Andrew not treat him like a child, here he sat on the couch almost sulking after hearing Andrew’s words.
Victor grasped Mattie’s chin in his hand, lifting Mattie’s eyes to meet his. “I want that you listen to me now Matthew. Are you listening?’ Victor’s voice was even and controlled, his stare conveying his serious tone. Mattie nodded, as best as he could with Victor gripping his chin. “I am seeing that look you have. If you are thinking that we do not want you, you are being mistaken.” Victor leaned closer, voice dropping an octave. “I am wanting nothing more than to throw you over my shoulder, dragging you up the stairs, and fuck you all night. But that is primal and selfish. We are building foundation, then I lay you in it, okay?” Indeed, Mattie saw something primal in Victor’s eyes as he licked his lips, looking down at Mattie’s mouth and grinning.
Mattie just nodded his head, unable to find the appropriate words to follow up Victor’s. “Good.” Victor said as he leaned further and pressed his lips to Mattie’s. There was no tongue, but the kiss was no less passionate without it. The kiss spoke volumes and Mattie melted into it, sighing contentedly when Victor pulled away.
“Alright you two, I think we should get some sleep now.” Andrew interrupted, standing before pulling Mattie to his feet.
Andrew led the way as the three of them climbed the stairs to their bedroom. Mattie didn’t know exactly what to expect once they reached the top of the stairs. Would he be sleeping with them? Would they walk him to his room and he’d sleep alone? His unspoken question was answered as Andrew walked straight to the large master bedroom, still holding Mattie’s hand. Mattie loved crawling across the expanse of the huge bed and curling up between the two of them, wiggling his toes under the blanket.
“Andy.” He whispered about five minutes after Victor turned the lights out.
“Yeah Mattie?”
“I can’t sleep.”
Andrew rolled over to face him, “Everything okay?”
“Yeah, just kind of wired after tonight.” Mattie explained.
They both laughed when they heard Victor snoring from his side of the bed. “Apparently our brooding partner doesn’t seem to suffer the same affliction.” Andrew joked.
Mattie laughed, reaching up and playing with a stray curl of Andrew’s hair. “Tell me about your family Andy, I’ve heard you talk about your mom and grandma, but I’ve never heard you speak about your dad.”
“Well, I was raised by mom and grandma, my dad left when I was still really young. The only thing I really remember about him was that he bought me my first camera. A consolation prize for another missed weekend, but it started my love of pictures. They lived in New York until a few years ago, my mom and grandma, but they moved out to Jersey when the cost of living in the city just became too much for them.” Andrew smiled when Mattie’s mouth stretched wide with a yawn, though he insisted he wasn’t tired.
“How did you and Victor meet?” Mattie asked.
“Our first day of college at NYU.” Andrew smiled, remembering that amazing day and wild night that followed.
Mattie laughed, “Really? How funny.”
“Yeah, we’d been in our dorm room for about six hours the first time Victor fucked me into the head board, and we’ve been together ever since.” Andrew’s eyes lit up the dark room as he shared more of his memories with Mattie. “We talked over burgers and found out we were both gay, so in a way I thought maybe it was just a matter of convenience, but I hoped for more from the start. I remember waking up the next morning after that first time and watching him sleep, saying to myself, I’m going to spend the rest of my life with this man.”
“And so you are.” Mattie finished Andrew’s thought for him.
“No Mattie, and so we are. There is no more you and me, or he and I. It’s us three from now on.” Andrew kissed Mattie’s forehead before pulling his body a little closer. Mattie slid perfectly into Andrew’s arms, head resting on his chest. He held Mattie, rubbing small circles into his back until he felt his body go limp, his breathing evening out.
Eventually Andrew drifted off as well, only to wake up a jumbled mass of entangled limbs just a few short hours later.
~ Chapter 9 | Finally ~
Mattie woke the next morning to a beam of sunlight warming his face and the soft chirping of birds outside the open bedroom window. He smiled, rolling over onto his back and stretching. “Good morning beautiful.” Victor’s melodic voice drew his attention. Mattie rolled over onto his side then cracked up when he took in the sight of Victor dressed in a bath robe and fuzzy slippers decorating his feet, leaning back against the head board reading the paper and sipping a cup of coffee.
Victor held the cup and the paper up in the air, away from his body, frowning as he looked down at himself. “What is funny?”
This, of course, only made Mattie laugh harder. He climbed over Victor and headed for the bathroom. After flushing he turned to brush his teeth only remembering mid-turn this wasn’t his bathroom. He was half way back out the door before his eyes and his brain caught up with each other, realizing his tooth brush was, in fact, dangling from the wall mounted holder next to Victor and Andrew’s bathroom mirror.
Head cocked to one side, Mattie stood and stared at his toothbrush for almost a full minute before leaving the bathroom and heading down the hall to his bedroom. He was so intent on his destination that he didn’t catch the gleeful grin on Victor’s face, still perched on the bed in his robe and fuzzy slippers, reading the morning paper.
“What the fuck?” Mattie said out loud to the empty room. He turned and walked back down the hall to Victor and Andrew’s room. “Victor.”
“Yes.” Victor didn’t even look
up, just sat there on the bed, feet crossed at the ankles, the top one swaying from side to side as he read his paper, the bunny rabbit ears flopping with each sway.
“Where’s my stuff?” Mattie asked.
Victor looked up at him then, “I forget, you blonde. I never like blondes, too simple. But you, you adorable, so I think I keep you.” Grinning, Victor turned back to his paper.
“It’s in here, of course.” Mattie shrieked and jumped when Andrew spoke up from directly behind him. Andrew laughed as he wrapped his arm around Mattie’s shoulders, walking them both into the room. “You were sleeping better than you have, well ever I think, so we did not want to wake you. Victor went down to make some coffee and grab the paper while I brought all your stuff in here.”
Mattie didn’t know what to say. He knew he would wind up in this room eventually, but after Andrew’s words of caution last night, Mattie thought it would be a gradual change. Not an overnight overhaul.
