Jon laughed, his smile lighting up his eyes. “Would you stop? Calm down, I just like looking at you is all.” He reached for Kory’s hands across the table. Kory blushed again, looking down at their joined hands and smiling. Jon reached up and palmed Kory’s cheek, wanting to feel the heat of that blush on his fingers. Of course their server chose that moment to approach the table.
They ordered a plate of wings, a basket of fries with extra ranch and a pitcher of beer. Kory was quiet, glancing in Jon’s direction every few seconds then grinning and looking away. Jon studied his date, trying to decipher every movement, blush and grin. The man that sat across from him was nothing like the man Jon had watched on film hundreds of times over the past few years. Hayden Cox was domineering, demanding and erotically sexy. Kory White was slightly reserved and curious, almost shy. The one thing Kory and his online persona had in common, aside from glaring good looks, was the cockiness. It was a conundrum Jon intended to pick apart, piece by piece.
“The awkward silence is killing me, so why don’t we get the forbidden topic out of the way first, then we can enjoy our evening, agreed?” Jon threw it out there and Kory nodded.
Kory took a long swallow from his mug, then sat it down and gave Jon his full attention. “Okay, ask away.”
“All right, but before I ask any questions, I just want you to know I don’t care. It doesn’t bother me and while I am a huge fan of your work, I want to get to know Kory, I want to date Kory, not Hayden Cox.” Jon had to put that out there before they went any further; he had to be sure Kory understood he wasn’t some star struck, psycho fan. Kory nodded and gave Jon what had to be the most genuine smile he had yet to see on that pretty face. It warmed Jon’s insides.
“Why gay porn?” Jon decided to address the largest elephant in the room first, might as well.
Kory chuckled, answering Jon’s question with a question. “Why not?” He shrugged his shoulders.
Jon lifted one eyebrow which turned Kory’s chuckle into a laugh. He held his hands up in surrender. “Okay, okay. Long story short, I was coming off a bad break-up and I needed money fast to pay my bills. I saw the flyer for All Cocks in the restroom at a gay bar and I set up an interview.”
Kory held up one finger, “I’m gay,” a second finger, “I was single.” A third finger went up, “I get paid on the spot, per shoot,” and then a fourth finger, “I get to fuck whenever I want with no strings attached.” He shrugged his shoulders.
Jon just stared at him, speechless. The first three fingers were expected; it was the fourth one that threw Jon off guard.
This time Kory reached for Jon’s hands, holding them in his palms, gently rubbing his thumbs across Jon’s knuckles. “That bad break up I mentioned. It was because we weren’t honest with each other. I’m not usually an open person, Jon. I like to stay disconnected, keep people at arm’s length. It is easier for me to be Hayden Cox, the cocky, self-assured porn star than it is for me to be Kory White, the fucked up guy with a chip on his shoulder and abandonment issues.”
Jon whistled low. “Wow.”
“Wow?” Kory looked at him warily.
“Yeah, wow. I think I just learned more about you in sixty seconds than most people would in a year.” Jon gave him a rueful smile.
Kory snorted. “Yeah, well, you should know Jon, I’m a runner.”
“So am I.” Jon gave him a lascivious grin.
“No, you don’t get it. I don’t deal well with pressure or stress. I shut down and I run. It’s why I’m single. Well, that and the porn. You should do yourself a favor and walk away now,” Kory stated flatly.
“Well, you should know I don’t give up that easily. When I see something I want I go after it. Right now, I want you, and I can run very, very fast. You should watch out; I just might catch you.” Jon relished the stunned look on Kory’s face. It lasted about ten seconds before Jon could see the wheels in his head churning, a witty comeback traveling the path from Kory’s brain to his lips, but thank fuck the server brought their food to the table right then.
Plates and mouths full of food, they sat in relative silence for a while until Kory prodded Jon for more details about him and his life. “So, are you Italian or Irish?” Kory asked around a mouth full of chicken. He just wanted to sit and listen to Jon talk for a while. His accent was sexy as hell - the way he replaced the letter ‘R’ with an ‘H’ at times, that Boston Harvard twang ever present just under the surface.
“Both, actually. My mom is Italian and my Da is Irish, both born and raised in Queens, high school sweethearts, thank Christ. No one else could put up with the mountains of shit they throw at each other; that much is for sure. All that aside, I have never seen two people more in love or more devoted to each other and their kids than my parents.” Jon smiled, his eyes distant but alive, like he was reliving a fun memory. Italian, Irish, Catholic and a cop. That explained the accent, the confident attitude, and then some.
“Brennan is an Irish surname, but Jon? That’s not Italian or Irish.” Kory said.
“Jon is short for Jonathon, after my grandfather on my mother’s side.” Jon shrugged.
Thankful the attention was off him and on Jon, Kory sat back and listened to all the stories Jon told him about growing up with three brothers in a staunchly traditional family trying to blend two vastly different cultures, also rooted in the church, with a string of men that that bled blue. Jon was a fifth generation NYPD detective as were two of his brothers; it was the family business. Salvatore and Raphael Brennan, Sal and Rafe for short, were both NYPD like Jon. Jon and Sal were both detectives and Jon occasionally worked undercover, while Rafe worked with the CSI team. Tristan Brennan, named after his great grandfather, was in Medical school at Harvard.
“Every family has a black sheep; Tris happens to be ours.” Jon said with a shrug.
“Yeah, but, he wants to be a doctor. How is that a bad thing, Jon? Your parents seriously aren’t happy for him?” Kory was a little bewildered. Being on his own most of his life gave him zero insight into the workings of a large family, much less the insanity involved when you mixed Irish and Italian blood and genes.
“I should clarify that, shouldn’t I?” Jon asked with a gleam in his green eyes. “Tris initially went to school to become a licensed therapist so he could work as a counselor. He enjoys the work so much, he decided to go back to school, Medical school to be exact, and obtain his PhD in Psychiatry. Our family is in-fucking-sane on a good day, Kory. Hell, Tris could probably do his thesis on events surrounding Christmas dinner at the Brennan house. I mean, don’t get me wrong, we are all proud of him. He’s probably the smartest of us all, but a psychiatrist?”
“Who is the oldest?” Kory asked.
This time Jon ticked off the finger count. “Sal is the oldest, then Tris, then me and then Rafe.” Jon barked out a laugh. “Mom thought she was done after they had me, so Rafe was a surprise.”
They sat quietly, eating and drinking for a while, a lull in conversation.
“So what about you? Any siblings or an only child?” Jon prodded.
“I have no family, just me.” Kory smiled at Jon when he spoke, but the brilliance Jon usually saw in Kory’s smile didn’t reach his eyes. Jon tucked that tidbit away for later.
Kory glanced down at his watch, shocked to see that four hours had passed since Jon picked him up at the apartment. When the server brought the check, they argued briefly over who would pay, but Jon insisted that since he had been the one to ask Kory out, he should be the one to pick up the check. It was almost midnight by the time they arrived back at Kory’s apartment. Uncertainty clouded Kory’s judgement as they rode the elevator up to his floor in silence. Should he invite Jon in? Tell him goodnight at the door? The elevator chimed as the doors opened and Jon followed Kory down the hall. They stood there, frozen for a few seconds. Thankfully Jon made the decision for them.
“I had a great time tonight Kory. I hope we can do it again, soon.” Jon’s voice was sincere and it made Kory smi
le.
“Yeah, me too, I’d like that very much.” Kory was surprised at just how much fun he had with Jon, and he didn’t have to pretend to be Hayden. It was refreshing.
Kory watched as Jon slowly leaned toward him, closing his eyes for that first kiss. He laughed out loud when Jon kissed his cheek then pulled back. “Goodnight Kory.” And with that, Jon made his way back to the elevator. Kory was so mesmerized by Jon’s ass as he walked away, and then by his eyes when they locked on him from the elevator, that he almost forgot what he was going to ask him.
“Oh wait!” Kory called out just before the doors closed. Jon managed to wedge his boot in between them and they whooshed open again.
Kory jogged back down the hall, stopping just outside the open doors. Jon had his arms stretched out, his hands holding the doors open. Kory was so enamored by the width of those broad shoulders, stretching the material of the shirt Jon wore almost to the breaking point, that he damn near tripped over his own feet. “There’s a cookout at the house over Labor Day weekend. You want to go with me?”
Jon smiled and nodded. “I need to make an appearance at my parents’ first, but after that, I’m all yours.”
“It’s a date then,” Kory said, smiling, and Jon couldn’t resist leaning out of the elevator and kissing him on the lips. It was just a quick peck before Jon stepped backward and the doors finally closed. Kory stood there smiling like an idiot for a few seconds, then turned and went back to his apartment.
Dusty was sitting on the couch with his feet up on the coffee table, remote in his hand when Kory walked in. “Hey! You’re home early. How was your date?” Dusty was winded, and Kory knew why. The little shit had been standing at the door, ear pressed up against it, listening to him and Jon say goodnight. He probably vaulted his ass over the chair and onto the couch when he heard the key in the door.
Kory just glared at him, trying to look fierce but unable to hide his grin. “Goodnight Dusty.”
“You’re no fun!” Dusty shouted as Kory closed the door to both his bedroom and the conversation.
~ Chapter 2 | What If ~
The day of the barbeque, Jon rode out to the house with Kory. It was nice for him to see Mattie and his partners again, to see Mattie was doing well. It wasn’t often Jon had the opportunity to visit with people involved in cases he had dealt with. And even less likely that when he did, they were doing as well as Mattie was. He knew it had everything to do with the support system his two partners and all the men that worked for them provided for each other. They truly were one big, happy family for the most part.
While Jon had a blast playing volleyball, riding the jet-skis and watching fireworks on the Sound; what he wanted now was a little alone time with Kory. Not ready for their day to be over, he gave Kory directions to a pub close to his precinct and they stopped for a couple beers. Jon assumed most of the officers he knew that frequented the pub would be with their families on Labor Day, but the minute they walked through the doors he was bombarded with greetings.
So much for some alone time, Jon grimaced. Kory took it all in stride - enjoyed it actually, Jon thought, if the smile he wore was any indication. Jon sat back and smiled himself, listening to his friends on the force tell his boyfriend some of their war stories. Boyfriend? Where did that come from? I like it though, boyfriend, yes. Jon was distracted by his own thoughts until Gianni slapped him hard on the back.
“This dumb son-of-a-bitch here, stripped down to his skivvies, grabbed an empty forty out of the dumpster and waltzed right into the store. He limped in there, swaying and slurring, that stupid mook was dumbfounded.” Oh God. Gianni was telling Kory about the convenience store robbery they were called out on when they were still partners and rookies.
“He didn’t know what to do, then he lowered his gun looking from Jon to the clerk, all but scratching his ass like the dumb fuck he was, and Jon body slammed him, taking him down.” Gianni was laughing harder at his own story than anyone else at the table.
“Sounds like you were the hero.” Kory grinned when he said it, but Jon could tell by the tone of his voice he wasn’t happy. His eyes betrayed him as well. They held a hint of fear.
Jon swung an arm over Kory’s shoulders, pulling him close enough to whisper in his ear. “It’s not as bad as Gianni is making it sound, but we can talk about it later if you like.” Kory nodded and Jon smiled at him, leaning in for a quick kiss.
“Goddamn Jon, come on, we don’t need to be seeing all that now.” Robert, one of the older officers that ran a desk spoke.
“Well, nobody invited your sorry ass over to our table, so deal with it or sit somewhere else.” Jon leaned over and gave Kory another kiss just to prove his point.
“I swear, I know you from somewhere; I just can’t place it.” It wasn’t the first time Gianni had mentioned recognizing Kory.
“A big good looking guy like you?” Kory was poking the bear. “I think I would remember.” And just for theatrical effect, Kory winked at Gianni. Everyone at the table cracked up and Gianni sputtered before heading to the bar for another round.
With Jon’s co-workers off at the bar or in the restroom, Kory took advantage of a few minutes of peace to talk to Jon. “So much for us having time to talk, but I like your friends, they seem cool with you being gay.”
Jon nodded as he drained the last swallow of beer from his mug. “They are, everyone is for the most part. I’m sure part of it is my last name. No one wants to piss off Chief Brennan. There are a few assholes here and there; it’s part of the reason Gianni and I aren’t partners anymore. I never kept my sexuality a secret, but Gianni did for a long time. When he finally came out, Cap assigned us new partners.”
“What? Why though? Did he think you two would be fucking in the backseat of the cruiser instead of doing your jobs?” Kory frowned when Jon laughed out loud.
“Sorry, I’m not laughing at you, that is verbatim what my Gran said when I told them. No, Cap was being proactive and avoiding unnecessary issues down the road. That way if something happens, some dumb fuck can’t say it’s because me and Gianni were fucking in the backseat instead of doing our jobs.”
Kory thought about it for a moment, then nodded. “Yeah, that makes sense I guess.” He looked toward the bar to make sure Gianni was still occupied buying another round, and then leaned into Jon’s body, whispering in his ear. “I think your friend Gianni knows who I am.”
“Well, yeah, I did introduce you two. You don’t remember? You’ve been sitting here the whole time.” Jon was joking but he gave Kory a slightly confused look.
“No, I think he knows who Hayden is.” Kory prodded. The light went off and Jon nodded, but then Gianni sat several beers down on the table so the conversation was done for the moment.
The five of them stayed at the pub until the bartender ran them off at closing time. Still feeling tipsy from the beers, Jon decided against driving Kory home straight away. Instead they walked to a city park that was a few blocks away and sat on the swings, talking and laughing, acting like a couple of teenagers out on their first date.
“Do you think you will ever kiss me, Jon?” Kory finally asked, glancing over at him sideways while still swaying slightly in his swing.
“I’ve kissed you, Kory.”
“Not really, just a quick peck here and there. I mean a real kiss, Jon.”
“Is that a request?” Jon asked, smiling wide. Kory just nodded, turning sideways in his swing, his hands gripping the chains tightly. Jon pushed himself closer to Kory, covering one of Kory’s hands with his bigger one, the other cupping Kory’s cheek and pulling him in. The first brush of Jon’s lips on his was gentle and exploratory. Kory could feel Jon’s breath on his lips, so he knew his mouth was open, but had yet to feel the warmth of his tongue. As if sensing what Kory wanted, the tip of Jon’s tongue grazed Kory’s bottom lip. Kory couldn’t have stopped the moan that escaped him if he tried. He could feel the smile on Jon’s face before his tongue breached Kory’s mouth, twisting and curl
ing with Kory’s, much more forceful and demanding than the kiss had been initially.
Both men tried to move closer to each other, only succeeding in their asses coming off the tiny swing seats, both landing on their knees in the grass. Kory quickly wrapped his arms around Jon’s neck, holding them together. Jon chuckled before taking Kory’s face in his hands, tilting his head sideways and deepening the kiss. They finally pulled apart when it became a struggle to breathe. Jon slowly blinked his eyes open and sort of wished he hadn’t. The sight of Kory sent all the blood in his body rushing toward his dick. Kory’s eyes were closed, lips red and kiss swollen, slightly parted as he breathed heavily, face flushed. It was the sexiest thing to look at the gorgeous man in front of him completely undone and knowing he caused that reaction. Jon’s first thought was, Jesus, I cannot wait to get this man naked in my bed, completely open and writhing underneath me.
Jon reached down and attempted to adjust his now rock hard dick in his jeans; they were entirely too tight all of a sudden. Kory laughed. It sounded winded and sent tingles up Jon’s spine.
