“I never liked that nigga anyway,” replied Power.

I felt my heart pounding like drum beats. He knew it all now, so how was it going to play out? Would this turn against me or would it benefit me? He was quiet for a moment, contemplating something.

“He gotta go, then,” said Power.

  I smiled.

  But there was more.

“I’ll help you, on one condition,” he continued. “You need to help me with a certain problem too.”

I was listening. I was definitely willing to help my man out by any means necessary. Whatever he needed done, I was there for him.

Power rubbed my leg and held me closely. “You help take care of my situation and I promise you, Rico will be a dead man by week’s end.” He sounded so certain of that. It was pleasing to hear.

“What you need help wit’ baby?” I asked, being so fuckin’ naïve.

“I need help killing that nigga Tango. Word is out on the streets is he the muthafucka out there bodying my niggas and now he went underground? He ain’t been around lately and I need that nigga found ASAP,” he said.

What? I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. But there was more.

“I need you to get in contact wit’ ya friend Mouse, and help me set up her man. You do this for me, I do that for you,” he said.

I was flabbergasted. Power was using me to help kill my best friend’s man. He knew how close Mouse and I was, and he saw the advantage in it. But how could I do this to my friend, snatch away her happiness? We recently reconciled our beef and were close again. If I didn’t do this, Rico would bury me for sure really soon. But if I did, it would destroy Mouse. We were talking again and I knew Mouse found true love with Tango. Doing this would surely tear us apart again and make us bitter enemies. But my freedom was at stake.

I felt like a pawn on a fuckin’ chessboard. I had Power moving me here and Rico moving me over there. I didn’t know what to do. I felt I didn’t have a choice. I had to think about my son and my own fuckin’ future.

I locked eyes with Rico and found myself saying, “I’ll do it.”

He smiled. “That’s my girl. That’s why I fuckin’ love you, ’cause you ride wit’ ya nigga.”

I did. And when Tango was dead, Rico would see his demise and maybe, finally, I would be free.
