26. Goodbye Ken
Ken and I were arguing all the time. It was particularly disturbing when I found a picture of a woman with a baby who coincidentally shared Ken’s last name.
Things started to click in my head. When we were in Maryland one time, he disappeared for hours, claiming he had to pick up mail. He would also make trips there every month.
Ken never admitted to being married and I didn’t put this all together at first because things were so hectic in our lives. But I probably suspected deep down and didn’t want to think about it. Maybe he was divorced. Maybe he was legally separated. What did I know? But the idea of his leading a clandestine life grated on me, especially if I was helping pay for it.
I also found a ton of pictures of him on 35mm slides having sex with a variety of women. It couldn’t be any more obvious he was fooling around on me. But considering my line of work and the fact we both swung, the lines of what was acceptable and not had become blurred for me. The difference was, I never “dated” without him. When I did films, he was on the set and I was a professional adult actress getting paid. He knew all the actors I was with. When we swung, we were both there together. There were certain moral and ethical lines I did not cross. Not so with him. What I did know for sure, though, was just how unhappy I had become with this man.
I also wanted to stop going to swing parties. It wasn’t really something I enjoyed. Ken wasn’t using it for the purpose for which it was intended — to meet new people and get to know them first before fooling around. He just wanted to get a free piece of ass and it was getting to the point where it was disgusting me. I looked the other way while Ken got his jollies, relieved because it got him off and I wouldn’t have to do him later. I may have been the only person to ever go to swing clubs for the purpose of avoiding sex. But now even that got tired.
We were even at a hotel one night when he said he was going to get ice and disappeared for a while. I caught him coming out of another room and said, “What are you doing in there?”
“The door was open so I wanted to peek in and see if everyone was okay.”
“Yeah, sure.” I didn’t really care. And yet, on at least some level, I did.
Ken also got off on peeking in windows. He was a pervert. But as fed up as I was with him, we were living in California and I didn’t really know anybody I could turn to or trust for help. Breaking up with a guy is often ugly for a woman. Men sometimes get violent or destructive. I had no real support system in place.
As my relationship was collapsing, my career was skyrocketing. I was given the moniker “The Marilyn Monroe of Porn,” and since she was one of my idols I found it very flattering. It still says that on the cover of Inside Seka. High Society magazine wanted me to do a photo shoot in a tribute to Marilyn, so I asked for a particularly good make-up artist who they agreed to fly in: Fred. The shoot was in New Jersey. Ken came along, too, but didn’t want to spring for another room, so Fred stayed with us. They paid me a decent amount of money under the condition that Ken was not allowed to be on the set during the shoot.
It was tense at best between us. One of the reasons for his being banned was I heard he was hitting on other girls. Besides, he was shooting pictures at the same time the pros were, which was throwing off all the lighting. It would take them twice as long to shoot because he was in the way. Unlike when I first began, I found I was much more relaxed without him there and the shoot went off without a hitch. But when the work was over we went back to the room and all hell broke loose.
Ken was really pissed off. I had just spent the day with this guy he didn’t know — Fred. He insinuated Fred and I had been fooling around.
“Are you that dumb you don’t know he’s gay?” Meanwhile, poor Fred was standing there uncomfortably through the entire screaming match.
Ken knew he was slowly but surely losing control of me and was freaking out. That was the first time I told him he couldn’t come on the set, and I was also starting to make my own friends. But he just kept screaming and yelling. I got fed up and told him I was leaving and he could do whatever he wanted. I started to get my clothes together. Ken and I always drove everywhere because we traveled with our dogs. That was another big joke throughout the business, because we never went anywhere without our three dogs.
In a frenzy, he suddenly grabbed my baby poodle and locked her in the car. I pleaded with him to give me my dog but he wouldn’t. He was desperately trying to keep me there. He didn’t think I would leave without the dog and he was right.
I did not know how much rage I had until that particular moment. He had a really gorgeous red and white Cadillac with white leather interior, and he clearly loved that vehicle more than he did me. I found a piece of two-by-four and started beating the Caddy and he was freaking out.
“Don’t hurt my car! Don’t hurt my car!”
“So give me my dog!”
Here I was, looking like Marilyn Monroe outside this sleazy hotel in New Jersey, and I started bashing it in.
One headlight gone.
He still wouldn’t give me the dog.
The other headlight gone.
No dog.
I started wailing on the hood and then the mirror on the side. I said, “The windshield is next.”
He still wouldn’t budge. The Caddy was starting to look totaled.
At this point the police pulled up — two officers in one car. They looked at me and simply asked, “What’s going on?”
I explained and Fred verified everything I said. The police looked at Ken. “Sir, open the car and give the lady her dog.”
He started arguing with them. They didn’t even give him time to plead his case. “Give her the dog!”
Finally, he relented.
The cops asked me what I wanted to do and I said I just wanted to get my stuff and leave. They stood there until I did just that. I didn’t even look at Ken, and the cops wouldn’t let him say a word to me. Every time he opened his mouth to say something they told him, “Be quiet. Leave her alone.”
I left for another local hotel with Fred, who was trying hard to keep me together. I went back to California to a home that was in his name, in spite of the fact I was the breadwinner. I knew I only had a few days to get my life in order because he was back East fixing his prized car. But I didn’t know what to do.
There was no communication between us at all at this point. I had all the locks changed on the house because I had no idea what he was planning. I was afraid for my safety. Actually, I was afraid for my life. He’d never beaten me or anything like that before, and I was a pretty big girl, but no one is tougher than a bullet.
After the second or third day I called the guys at Caballero, who produced Swedish Erotica, and they told me they’d send two guys over to help me move. The only problem was I had nowhere to go.
They sent two young guys with a big truck to help me get my stuff out of there. They were huge. Muscle on top of muscle. I’d never seen two fellows quite that size before. I was upstairs as they took the furniture apart. But I’d forgotten the garage door was open and I didn’t hear a car pull up. I didn’t think it would be Ken so soon, but it was.
For some strange reason, the first thing he did was throw his clothes in the washing machine. Why, I don’t know. But he did.
When I heard the washing machine, I said to the guys, “What the hell is going on?” There he was in the garage separating his clothes to do a wash, like nothing in the world had happened.
“What are these guys doing here?” he asked.
“I’m leaving.”
“You’re not going anywhere.”
“You’re not stopping her,” one of my protectors said with a “Don’t fuck with me” scowl plastered on his face.
They asked me if I wanted the washer and dryer and I said, “Absolutely.”r />
“But I have my clothes in there… .”
Ignoring him, they cut the line and pulled Ken’s load out, unceremoniously dumping his soaking garments on the floor of the garage. “Not anymore you don’t.”
They picked up the washer and dryer and without a bit of effort loaded in on the truck. These big boys were not for the faint of heart.
Ken started to say something and one of the guys said, “You’ll be in a healthier place if you just didn’t say anything.”
They proceeded to load the rest of my things in the truck. I had car keys in my hand for my little chocolate brown Spitfire convertible and they saw I was agitated.
“Do you want to drive?”
“No, I’m a little too upset to drive.”
One got on the right hand side of the car and the other guy on the left, and they picked it up and deposited it on the truck. Just like that.
My dog, Yvonne, and the little Spitfire and I sat all loaded on the truck. Having absolutely no idea what lay ahead, off we went.
27. The Underground Railroad
The Swedish Erotica guys had an apartment they owned and let me use for free. It was gorgeous and in a nice neighborhood. It wasn’t fancy, but everything seemed to be brand new. It was completely furnished down to dishes and pots and pans. They put my things in storage. This, of course, was in the pre-cell phone days so I was grateful there was a phone already hooked up. I settled in and for the first time I could remember, I was feeling lost. There was nobody else there; it was just me. No husband. No boyfriend. No real friends. And I didn’t know my way around at all. I even got lost going to the supermarket. But as lost as I felt, I was relieved at the same time. And I slept a lot because I was emotionally and physically drained.
I had been paid pretty well thus far in my adult career, but foolishly all I had in my name was my little car. I had just begun sticking some money in a bank account, which Ken didn’t know about, because after finding the pictures of his family I didn’t trust him like I did in the beginning.
After sleeping for a week and realizing my funds wouldn’t last forever, I called Fred. We talked and I told him what had happened. He said, “I wasn’t going to tell you to leave the guy, but he’s a jerk. I’m glad you did, though.”
To this day, the thought of Ken just scares me. I feel he’s dangerous and vengeful.
Fred told me if I came to Chicago he could help me out and I could live in his huge house in Barrington. I said “fine” and packed up what little belongings I had. The Swedish Erotica guys said they would take care of my car. I left most of my stuff in California and went to Illinois.
Fred picked me up at the airport and I had never seen a house like his before in my life. It was very reminiscent of a Frank Lloyd Wright. Fred had done very well for himself. He used to breed blue Afghan hounds and show dogs, which he was no longer doing at that point. And the make-up gig was very good to him, as he used to work with Rona Barrett, Fleetwood Mac, and others. In the late seventies and early eighties he was charging $500 a face, which in those days was a heck of a lot of money. He also worked a lot on adult sets.
He was a very interesting man and he found me very interesting. On my sci-fi film, Ultra Flesh, he put jewels over my eyes and I gave him various ideas regarding my make-up. He saw I paid attention to detail, which he appreciated.
And he desperately wanted to give me a make-over.
If you look at the pictures of me from the seventies, I had an older look. Fred made me appear younger and a lot more exotic and different than everyone else in the business — again. Very high fashion. If you compare the cover of Inside Seka to a later Club Magazine picture, there’s a dramatic difference.
I moved into Fred’s house and he made me start working out. I was also taking ballet lessons, along with singing lessons. I enrolled at Northwestern University to study diction and elocution. All of this helped me attain my goal of ridding myself of my Southern accent.
Fred was trying to bring me to a higher level, which would mean more pay. He was committed to updating my all-around appearance for the eighties. At the time, I didn’t know how to do my clothes. I started getting manicures, pedicures, and facials. After three or four weeks, he posed to me that he wanted to be my manager. He said since I was living in his house and he was paying for all of this, we should have a 50/50 split. At this particular point in my life I was learning a lot and feeling better about myself. Film work kept me busy and kept my mind off things. Besides, I knew Fred didn’t want to fuck me. At least not sexually. I wasn’t in the mood for any sexual pressure.
At that point, I wasn’t interested in sex unless it was on the set. After Ken, I just felt used. Fred was gay and did just fine on his own. His very pretty lover, Gary, lived with him. I liked Gary, but he wasn’t happy I was there. Plus, he was just nuts. He was an extremely jealous and insecure man who didn’t like that Fred was with me all the time.
Fred and I were on the way back from the gym one day when we stopped at a gas station convenience store for a pack of cigarettes. They had men’s magazines and Fred was intently looking at one. I curiously thought to myself, “Why is he staring at a girlie magazine?” Then he actually bought it.
“Why are you looking at this?”
I started thumbing through it and he showed me an index card-size entry form to win a contest to “direct Seka’s next movie.” I had no idea what this was about, as I had never worked for, nor even spoken a word with Club Magazine.
“They can’t just use your name like that.”
The first thing we did was to call my lawyer to have my name registered and trademarked. I didn’t own the rights to the picture they used, so I had no legal complaint there. But I called the magazine and asked, “What are you going to do when you have a winner and I don’t want to do your movie?”
“We thought we’d talk to you afterwards.”
I explained how bad it would make me look if they held the contest and I didn’t go through with it, so I negotiated a price with them. They came back with some ridiculously low counter-offer and I sued them.
Nobody in the adult business had ever sued anybody. It was unheard of. I guess everybody was afraid to because they figured they’d never work again.
I retained a lawyer who was absolutely ready to jump all over it. He was hungry because he was on a contingency and taking a third. He also knew he had a damn strong case. The Club Magazine people thought I’d let it go, but I didn’t.
Fred and I were ready to go before the judge when Club came to us and asked if we’d settle out of court. Fred demanded free ad space in the magazine, a retainer fee for a year, and multiple layouts for working exclusively for them, and that they could only use the shots of me once. Afterwards, I’d own the rights to every photo from that point on.
As for actual monetary damages, we agreed to settle it out of court for a dollar. The lawyer wasn’t happy because he was getting thirty-three cents. But I gave him the whole dollar. I’m generous like that.
This contract had a lot of potential for real money. It also set a precedent for women in the business and raised the bar for performers to make money. It proved we could say no to things without the fear of being blacklisted.
I was the first person to take control of my destiny in this business.
Fred did a great job. I learned a lot from him and we had a great time doing it. But like every other man who had been in my life, he started to get greedy. And it didn’t take long.
28. Let the Games Begin
The metamorphoses had taken place. Thanks to Fred, I looked and felt better than I ever had. Meanwhile, Club Magazine ran that little contest to direct my next movie, although to the best of my recollection they didn’t use the winner the way they advertised. Club at the time also owned a company called Electric Blue, which produced R-rated films. They had been doing some work with Marilyn Chambers and they wanted me to do one of their Electric Blues for them. They did them in a numbered series and they were at 007
, so I suggested they do a James Bond sort of thing, which they agreed to.
I think it got shot down because of the copyright and trademark on Bond. But they sent Fred and me to England because I don’t travel alone. He did all the make-up and what was so cool is they paid me a really decent amount of money and flew us both first class to Europe, which was a pretty expensive ticket.
After we did the film — and there wasn’t anything eventful about the shoot itself — we decided to travel through Europe. We took our tickets to American Airlines to see if we could go to Paris and Italy if we converted the tickets. They said we could do anything we wanted first class as long as we didn’t exceed the mileage from England to Chicago.
The first stop was Paris and I fell in love with it. I was this little country bumpkin and amazingly, there I was.
We were sitting on the Left Bank having dinner one evening and this hot little blonde boy walked by and I just couldn’t resist. I spoke no French. He spoke no English. It was perfect. He had beautiful blonde curly hair, big blue eyes, and was tanned and buff. Ironically enough, the friend he was with was gay. So Fred grabbed one and I grabbed the other and off we went. That was the event that snapped me out of my off-set abstinence after Ken.
The next night, Fred dragged me to the ballet. Frank Zappa was there and we had on the same Kensie sweater. He walked up, looked at me, and said, “Nice sweater.” I was so tongue-tied I just nodded my head. He said, “What’s up, Seka; cat got your tongue?”
“Well, you’re Frank Zappa,” I blubbered all over myself.
“I know that.”
It blew me away because here was one of my all-time favorite musicians and he knew little old me. I was becoming aware I was famous to some degree, but didn’t realize how famous. This was one of the first times it hit me. He told me to enjoy the show and that was that. Funny enough, I bumped into Frank again at the opening of “Dreamgirls” in New York a few months later and we both had on the same sweater again.
