  Then there was the wheeze and chug of an old diesel engine and Bridget opened her eyes to see an ancient black cab pulling up in the lane outside. When she saw the face at its window, with one part of her brain – the scrupulous part, the anxious part, the OCD part – she thought, Matt must have told her I was here but somewhere deeper, somewhere safer and more certain, Bridget thought, she knew. She took two steps to the door and opened it.

  The cab pulled off, leaving its passenger in front of Bridget on the pavement. Hair untidy, white shirt that could do with a wash, the broad smile of an angel.

  ‘I thought maybe you’d need me,’ said Gill Lawson, pushing past her into the room where boxes stood and then turning back to set her hands square on Bridget’s shoulders. ‘But looks like there’s nothing to see here.’ Bridget felt a smile stretch her face, wider, then wider, and Gill’s matched it. ‘You’re done?’

  ‘All done,’ Bridget said. ‘We’re all done.’
