The plates were moved near the stove and each was topped with the hot, melted chocolate. “Ta-da, the official s’mores waffle.”

  “Looks delicious.”

Picking up two of the plates, Sonja held the beautifully displayed dishes in each hand. “I think these first two servings should go out to Bethany and Frank. I have some apologizing to do after some of the things I’ve said to both of them the last couple days.”

“Food always makes things easier,” Belinda agreed.

“Oh, wait. I almost forgot something.”

  “What is it?”

“Can you grab that jar of peanut butter? I was going to bring it out to Frank.”

Later that night, after the full festivities were over, Sonja felt like she might just fall over and go to sleep. She, Frank, Belinda, and Bethany all sat out near the bonfire, enjoying its warmth.

Thankfully, Sonja’s fullest apologies had been accepted, and the food made all the difference.

Even Bethany seemed to forgive her.

“So, Beth? Where did you hear that story you told last night?”

“Oh, that. Some strange looking lady who came into the park told me one day. She said it makes a great campfire story.”

  “That it does,” Sonja laughed.

“Anyway, I’m sorry about staring at you during the story. Guess I was hoping to spook you.”

  “And you did at that.”

Glancing over at Belinda, Bethany pointed. “You know, Belinda, you kind of look like the lady who told me that story.”

“Imagine that,” Belinda replied, eyeing Sonja.

“Well, I think I’m heading down to my cabin for the night,” Bethany announced, standing up and walking away from the fire. Everyone said their goodnights to her as she wandered off.

“I can’t believe you were worried about Beth,” Frank whispered in his girlfriend’s ear, still teasing her about the situation.

“Hey, a girl’s got to protect what’s hers.” Leaning her chin up, she kissed him.

“Doesn’t hurt my feelings any. If you think I’m still attractive enough that the ladies are interested in me, I think that’s stellar.”

“Don’t push it buster,” she joked.
