  ‘I’m sorry I deceived you.’

  Fran nodded.

  ‘William hasn’t been,’ said Libby.

  ‘No.’

  ‘Is that why you’re here?’

‘No, I just figured you might appreciate a visit.’

  ‘Thank you.’

Mike had thought she was mad coming here.

‘Why the hell do you want to go and see her?’

‘Because she’s got no one, she’s never had anyone.’

  ‘You’re soft, that’s your problem.’

Libby reached her hand across the table.

  ‘I appreciate it.’

  Fran moved her hand back.

  ‘Don’t milk it.’

Libby smiled. It may only be one friend. But an inspector for a friend could be worth having.

Richard Mullard saddled the mare and walked her out of the stables. He waved to Ewan as he strolled from the house.

‘Just the man,’ Richard said, smiling at Ewan. ‘Jasmine could do with a trot if you have time.’

  ‘Sure,’ said Ewan.

‘Settling in at the gamekeeper’s cottage okay?’ Richard asked.

  ‘Yeah, it’s perfect,’ smiled Ewan.

‘Perfect for us too,’ said Richard. ‘We hadn’t bargained on getting a gamekeeper so soon after moving into Manstead.’

‘It was good of William to recommend me.’

  Ewan stroked Jasmine’s flank.

  ‘She’s a beautiful horse.’

‘She sure is. By the way, you don’t know anyone local who’d be interested in a housekeeping position, do you? William said you might know of someone.’

  Ewan smiled.

‘As it happens I do. Molly, who works in the teashop, is looking for a more permanent position. There’s no work for her there in the winter.’

‘Wonderful, tell her to pop along one day this week and we can chat about it.’

Ewan nodded. They both turned at the sound of the Mercedes travelling up the driveway.

‘Ah,’ said Richard. ‘That will be Miranda, my daughter.’

A slim blonde girl climbed from the car. Richard waved.

‘Come and meet Miranda,’ he said.

She hugged Richard and then turned to Ewan.

  ‘Oh hello,’ she said.

Her bright blue eyes flashed his way and she deliberately thrust her breasts forward.

  ‘I’m Miranda.’

‘Miranda is a keen rider,’ said Richard. ‘I’m sure you’ll both get on very well.’

  Miranda smiled warmly at Ewan.

‘Call in tonight for a drink,’ said Richard.

Ewan turned his eyes from Miranda.

‘Thanks, but I can’t. I have a dress rehearsal with the Padley Players.’

‘Brilliant, I didn’t know you were into the theatre stuff. What part are you playing?’

‘I’m playing Dr Jekyll in a production of Jekyll and Hyde,’ Ewan grins.

  Miranda wrinkled her nose.

  ‘I’ve not heard of that.’

‘It’s before your time,’ Ewan said as he walked away.
