She could only moan.
“Kara?” He lifted his head and fixed those blue eyes on her. “You wanted to talk.”
“I did?”
He stroked her belly, occasionally dipping between her legs for a quick stroke. “I think you did.”
“I don’t remember.”
“It could be sunstroke. Perhaps we should get you inside where it’s cool and you can recover.” He crawled down her body and buried his face between her legs—just for a second—and then sat up on his heels. He stroked the bottom of her foot, tickling her. “You do look a little flushed.”
She giggled and sat up. “It’s not sunstroke.”
“If you’re sure.” He bent over and sucked her toes into his mouth.
Oh God. She melted into the sensation for a second—perhaps a little longer—before making herself draw her feet back. “Hold it, you’re right. I have something to tell you.”
“Nana’s in love,” he said. “He’s a little younger than she is, but I don’t think she minds.”
Kara laughed. It was true. Nana had been dating a shifter from the Novo Club now for two months. Kara had never seen her so happy. Talk about a heart condition. She was as giddy as a teenager with her first crush.
“No, that’s not what I wanted to talk about,” she said. “This is about us.”
“You’re finally going to confess to dressing up as Beauty and seducing this handsome guy at a charity ball a few years ago.”
“No, that’s not it either.”
“Because he was devastated when you disappeared,” he said. “Completely fell apart. He was utterly useless without you.”
Her heart pounded along with the Beat in her chest. I love you, she said silently.
I love you too, he replied.
She’d lost the taste for teasing him about her secret. Now she just wanted to tell him as soon as possible. Brushing the hair off his forehead, she kissed him quickly and then reached into the picnic basket. She drew out the small package and handed it to him.
He frowned as he took it from her. “I thought you were going to tell me something, not give me a gift. I have yours back at the cottage.”
“Open it,” she said.
“But—”
“Open it.” She tapped the cloth wrapping. “Please?”
He shrugged, sat up, and unfolded the fabric surrounding the soft little object she’d bought as soon as she was sure.
A stuffed tiger.
Eyes wide, he looked up at her. “Does this mean…”
“Does it mean what?”
“I don’t think Jamie would be interested in a new stuffed tiger, so…”
“Yes?” She clasped her hands together, her breath coming faster. Was he happy? She’d assumed he would be, but it would make travel more awkward than it already was just with Jamie, and…
He caught her up in his arms and pinned her onto the blanket. “Oh, Kara, oh Kara,” he said between kisses. He held her face and touched his nose to hers. “I’ve never been so happy.”
She laughed. Thank God. “Me too.”
“How do you feel?” He rolled off her, moving his weight to the sand. “Are you tired? Nauseated? Emotional?”
“Definitely emotional,” she said, wiping away a tear. How could life be so good?
“As am I.” He kissed her again, then sat up. “As it happens, I have something for you as well.”
“I thought you said it was in the cottage,” she said.
“This is just a little something. Not your anniversary present.” He crawled over to his pants, folded next to the picnic basket, and took a small velvet box out of his shorts pocket.
“You already gave me a heck of a ring,” she said, holding her hand out and wiggling her fingers. Talk about rocks. It was enough to make her become a geologist.
“Open it.” He set it in her lap.
In the past year, she’d learned how extravagant he could be. She was almost afraid to find out—or underestimate—how much money he’d spent this time. She flashed him a loving smile and opened the box.
Resting there in the satin were four little gold tigers on a chain.
Four.
“Hey!” She looked at him, struggling for words. “You knew?”
He grinned. “I think I knew before you did.”
She smacked him on the shoulder. The tigers were beautiful, very, very beautiful, but she had to hit him for putting her through that.
He only laughed and rolled onto his side next to her, hooking his arm around her waist and burying his face in her belly. “I can hear her.”
Why had she doubted the bond they shared? “So can I,” she said, stroking his hair.
“I can hear her Beat.”
“It’s getting noisy around here,” Kara said.
He looked up at her, his blue eyes shining. “I love noise. Why do you think I became a rock star?”
