Images of their night returned to her. “What an incredible night.”

His warm breath warmed her ear, sending tingles within. Then he nuzzled her neck. “Why not make it an incredible morning.” He slid his hand over her arm, leaving tingles that sparkled as he traveled over her hip and grabbed her rear. “You have the perfect ass, you know?”

“I splurged at the ass store.” She wiggled it and turned over her shoulder to give him a saucy smile.

“Oh, did you now?” He pressed his hardening cock against her, sliding between her cheeks. He brought his hand up and reached over to cup a breast. “Looks like you splurged on your tits, too.”

“Not so painful on my wallet. They had a special—buy one, get one free.”

He laughed as he flipped her onto her back, and she lost the straight face she was trying to keep, laughing with him. Then he climbed on her. “You’re in a playful mood this morning, I see.” He pinned her arms over her head and nuzzled her neck, leaving a trail of soft butterfly kisses. “Do you want to play?”

Her breath caught in her throat as he moved further down, now over her shoulder, along the top curve of her breast. “What do you want to play?” she asked.

He beamed at her with a wicked smile. “I haven’t finished finding all the places you’re ticklish.”

“No,” she squealed in laughter, trying to free her arms.

“Where do you think you’re going?” His eyes took on a dark, predatory glint, but he let her arms go.

She reached for a pillow to shield her body. While she squirmed to get away, he somehow found his way under the pillow and clamped a hold on her foot. “Found one.” His lips touched the sole of her foot, enough to shoot half her body into the air.

“No, I’m too ticklish,” she protested.

“But you love it.” He grabbed hold of her ankle and licked the sensitive spot behind her knee.

“No.” She thrashed on the bed. “You’re killing me.”

“One more,” he said. “My favorite.”

She froze in anticipation, knowing where he was heading. He sported a devilish grin, and he lowered his head and kissed her inner thigh with the lightest touch. She fought to stay still. It tickled, but felt so good. He licked up one side and down another, savoring every inch. It was agony. Blissful agony. She couldn’t take it, but she didn’t want him to stop.

His warm breath tickled her pussy. All her focus pooled there. “Want me to stop?”

He knew damn well what he was doing. Always did know how to get her hot and ready. “Don’t you dare,” she said through deepening breaths.

She clutched her sheets as he tormented her with his hot breath as she waited.

“That’s my girl,” he said and darted his tongue out.

She settled back as he explored her. Ecstasy.

He brought her again to a delirious height before she crashed down. She caught her breath while her legs still trembled. He lay next to her with a satisfied smile on his face. “How was that?”

“Beyond incredible,” she said, climbing up to straddle him. “Now it’s my turn to play with you.”

A flurry of excitement kicked at her heart as he lay on her pillow, the sunlight creeping through the window lighting up his face. The jet black hair she loved contrasted against the lavender cotton sheets. She pinned his arms over his head, enjoying the powerful feeling of taking control.

“As you wish, my lady.” His dark eyes sparkled with humor and sensuality.

Lina kissed his chest, letting her fingers trail along his smooth, carved abs. When she reached that sexy V leading further down, his breathing hitched.

She exhaled slowly over his rigid cock. “I should tease you the way you tormented me,” she said in a low voice.

“I dreamed about this many nights. Over a thousand,” he added. “Isn’t that torture enough?”

Such intense emotions flooded through her, she found it hard to find words. She moved up to see his face. “You counted?”

He nodded. “I thought it would get easier with time. We’d learn to forget each other.” He paused. “It never happened.”

Her heart pounded madly, echoing the state of her raw emotions. She moved up to kiss his lips, the erotic taste of her fluids fueling her need to get closer to him, connect on every level. “No more waiting,” she said.

She slid back down and kissed the tip of his cock, running her tongue around the head while she caressed his sac.

Antonio reached a hand into her hair. “Oh, Lina,” he moaned.

She took him in her mouth and with deliberate slowness, increased the speed and pressure until his hand stopped her movement. “You have to stop or I’ll come.” His voice came out dark and gravelly. “And I want to fuck you again.”

Lina reached into her dresser drawer and pulled out a condom. “I’ve got this,” she said and rolled it over his erection.

She climbed on top of him, rubbing his sheathed cock between her wet folds. Then she slid the tip inside her and he groaned. Antonio gripped her hips as she impaled herself on him, dropping her head back.

“God, Lina, you feel so good.” His hands explored her body as she rode him—breasts, belly, hips, ass—like he couldn’t get enough of touching her.

If they only had one night together it would be worth it, but now that she had another taste of him, she wouldn’t let him go. Not without a tooth and nail, hair-pulling fight.

The quicker she rose and fell on him, the more she panted. Pants turned into soft moans with the increasing friction. The exquisite rising pressure was too much. She rode him harder, seeking her peak. Reaching it, tiding over with a crest of ecstasy, tension leaving her body in waves of pleasure.

Antonio gripped her hips tighter and pulled her down hard. “I’m with you,” he said, ramming deep within her.

Her walls continued to contract around him, and she fell forward to lay in the crook between his head and shoulder. Their hearts pounded against each other while they caught their breath.

“That was the best night and morning I’ve had in a long time,” he said.

“Me, too,” she said, snuggling into the nook.

After several minutes while she listened to his heartbeat slow, he kissed her hair. “What are you doing today?”

A pang of guilt hit her. She was supposed to be making final calls about her wedding. Instead, she’d be making cancellations. “I have to make some calls. But that can wait until later.”

“Good. Perhaps I can convince you to stay here in bed with me a little longer.”

“A lot longer.” She gave her most vixen-like smile. “Stay here. I’ll make some coffee and be right back.”

  “Want some help?”

“No. I want you to stay here in my bed so I can fantasize all the things I can do with you when I return.”

Lina threw on plaid pajama shorts and a tank top. She prepared the coffee and while it brewed checked the contents of her kitchen to see what she could scrounge up for breakfast. Neither she nor Krystal were good about food shopping, and trips to the store were fueled more by desperation rather than planning ahead. As she checked to see if they had enough milk for bowls of cereal, someone knocked on her door.

No, not a knock. Whoever it was pounded on it.

  “Lina, we need to talk.”

Oh shit. Brett. This wasn’t good. Definitely not with Antonio in her bedroom.

“This isn’t a good time, Brett.”

“We need to talk about last night.”

She remembered how ugly things had gotten, and her temper raged. “I think we need to cool down more before we can talk rationally.”

“Cut the crap, Lina. I’m coming in.”

The sound of her lock opening reminded her he had a key. Shit. Within another second, he was in her doorway.

“You have to leave. I’m not ready to talk.”

“Come on, babe. Things got out of hand last night. We both said and did things we didn’t mean.”

  She rais
ed her eyebrows. “Like hitting me?”

“Don’t play the victim. You got some good shots in yourself. Going for my balls. I didn’t know you had it in you.”

“Apparently, we don’t know a lot about each other.”

Brett scanned the apartment. “Krystal here?”

  “Why?”

“I told you, I want to talk. I’d rather do that alone.” His eyes froze on a pair of black boots near the couch. Antonio’s boots. “Those better be someone Krystal is fucking and not you.”

“Don’t talk about either one of us that way.”

“It is you.” His cold eyes assessed her, then flashed with accusation. “I can see it in your eyes. I knew you were fucking someone else, you whore.”

“Get out, Brett. Get out now!”

Her shouts captured Antonio’s attention, and he threw open her bedroom door, shirt untucked over his black jeans.

“I know losing her isn’t easy,” he said in an understanding tone, but with a piercing gaze. “But don’t ever talk to her like that.”

“Who the fuck are you, asshole?” Brett pointed at him. “Stay the fuck out of this. This is my fiancée you’re sleeping with.” He then pointed at Lina.

“Was your fiancée,” Lina said. “I told you it’s over.”

“Listen, man, she ended it. She wants you to leave her alone, so get out of here before I think too hard about that mark on her face.”

“She deserves more than a mark for screwing me over like this, fucking some guy when we were engaged as of yesterday.” He raised his chin with defiance. “How long have you been fucking her?”

Icy resolve surrounded an intense fury radiating from Antonio’s eyes. He adopted a wide stance and balled his hands into fists, then didn’t move. The air around him seemed to vibrate with energy as he appeared to fight a powerful demon rising within. Lina had never seen him this way before, and she found the Marine before her more terrifying and devastatingly irresistible than ever.

“Lina and I have not been together for several years until last night,” Antonio said through gritted teeth. “She wasn’t cheating on you.”

Realization dawned through Brett’s expression. “You’re the one who broke her heart. The one who left her back here so he could run off and play soldier.”

Lina knew Antonio hated that expression for many reasons. When she saw Antonio’s face tighten, his lips a grim line, she knew Brett had crossed the line. All expression left Antonio’s face except for a dead-eyed glare that focused on one thing—Brett. His balled hand twitched.

“How dare you say that?” She grabbed Brett’s arm. “You have no idea what he’s faced.”

Brett threw Lina’s grasp from his arm, knocking her off balance, and she stumbled into the couch, which broke her fall. Antonio sprang on him so fast, Brett appeared stunned it even happened. Even more so when blood spurted from his nose and over his face from the three punches Antonio landed before Brett shielded his face.

“No, Antonio. Stop!” Lina shouted, pulling his arm back. She almost flew over with the momentum of another punch, but he stopped himself in time.

Brett stumbled as he tried to stand. Antonio reached a hand out to him.

“Get away from me, psycho.” Rising to his feet, he wiped the blood off with the back of his hand.

Lina brought him a dish towel, which he snatched from her.

“You want her, have her,” he snapped. “She’s not worth it.” Throwing the towel to the floor, he stormed to her front door, pausing. “How long before she cheats on you, too?”

  Chapter 10

Antonio washed the blood off his hands in Lina’s bathroom. His knuckles would bruise, but they would heal, as would Brett’s face. It didn’t matter that he had landed all those punches. Brett’s blow with words did far more damage than Antonio had with his fists.

“How long before she cheats on you, too?”

Brett’s words echoed in his ear, twisting through his system and leaving a knot in his gut. He was in no better shape than any of the guys whom he’d served with overseas, worried if their wives or girlfriends were cheating on them with another man back home. He glanced up to see his reflection in the mirror. You knew you couldn’t handle that worry. Coward.

He tried to swallow the jealousy, keep it from ruining whatever chance he had at starting again with Lina. He closed his eyes and forced the demons to settle down and then returned to Lina.

“Are you okay?” she asked, scanning his face and checking his hands.

“I’m fine.” He stood upright. He pictured Lina with another man, his face unclear. He took her hand, and she smiled at him. The demons crept up, wrapping around his spine.

“He was out of line. I’m sorry that happened.”

He pictured Lina kissing this other man, who could be anyone. The demons crawled into his chest cavity, taking up space, making it difficult to breathe.

“Can I get you anything?” she asked. “You seem tense. How about a drink?”

The man undressed Lina. He heard her soft moans as he touched her cheek, her breasts, and moved his hands over her skin. The demons took hold of his entire being, the uncontrollable jealousy making it impossible to think of anything else. Brett’s words had sliced into his deepest fear, uncovering it and leaving him there raw and exposed.

He put a voice to the vulnerable feelings he’d struggled with for years. “How do I know you won’t cheat on me?”

When he saw the hurt in her eye, he wished he could take it back. But it was too late. And all those years of keeping that insecurity buried came boiling forth.

“Trust, that’s why,” she replied in a soft voice.

He drove the knife in further, an effort to preserve himself, but destroying her in the process. “Tell that to Brett.”

Her hurt magnified through her widening blue eyes, now glistening with the beginnings of tears. She squeezed them shut, then seemed to steel herself for his ambush. She raised her chin and declared, “You and I are different. We have a history.”

Why didn’t he shut the hell up? “How do I know your feelings won’t change?” Why did he continue to make things worse?

“You don’t. That’s what trust is.”

Antonio paced, working through his muddled emotions. “Trust isn’t something to take lightly.”

“I’ve loved you for years, you fool. I’ve always been true to you. You’re the one who pushed me away.” Realization dawned on her face. “Maybe because you didn’t trust me back then.”

Her accusation tapped into his fear, the one he buried, compartmentalized so he could go on. She was right. It’s why you broke it off with Lina years ago. It wasn’t only her you were worried about, it was you.

“That’s it,” she said, reading the truth in his expression. “All that noble talk about doing what’s best for me, letting me live my own life—it was bullshit, wasn’t it?” When he didn’t answer, she prodded, “Wasn’t it!”

“Lina”—he rubbed his head, searching for the right words—“what I wanted was what’s best for you.”

“No, don’t bother explaining,” she snapped. “You don’t trust me, fine. You never did.” She stormed over to her front door and threw it open. “If you want what’s best for me, save the noble act. It’s insulting.” She motioned for him to exit. “I think you should leave.”

Lina stared at the door, still fuming after kicking Antonio out.

Earlier this week I was wrestling choosing between two guys. Today I have none.

  Awesome.

So be it. She was better off. Not accommodating Brett and dealing with his obsession over sports. And not dealing with Antonio and his inability to trust her. That was fine. She was a woman in the twenty-first century with a degree. She didn’t need a damn man to mess with her head.

She stormed over to the stereo to psych herself up, searching for the right tone to fit her mood. She found a playlist of songs she’d made back with her friends during her freshman year in college, a sor
t of girl power tribute. It evoked a smile when she thought about it. Dammit, it fit the mood. She didn’t need a man to complete her.

Twenty minutes later, Krystal entered the apartment, catching her in an embarrassing pose dancing to Destiny Child’s “Independent Woman.”

Krystal grinned and threw her hands up to join her. They sang together, loud and proud until the final notes of the song. Then they fell onto the sofa laughing.

“What’s gotten into you?” Krystal asked, tossing a throw pillow her way.
