“Nah.” He nudged free the top button of her pajamas and then the next one. Silken skin, delectable cleavage…

“Liar. You were perfectly lucid because your brain likes Tylenol 3 much better than what you were taking before.”

“I was?” One more button and her dark nipples peeked out of her shirt’s plackets.

  She sighed. “You were.”

“What’d he tell me?” Al pulled one of her nipples between his lips and sucked hard, rolling his gaze up to her.

It was obvious she wanted to be annoyed with him, but couldn’t be. He made her gasp—made her body arc toward his.

She brushed him away and dragged her palm across her teased flesh, which only perked the nub up even more. “He told you to behave yourself.”

“I am behaving.” Al slipped his hand down the front of his sweatpants and hissed as his fingers passed over his cock. He wanted to be inside her so bad. He knew what the doctor said—that he should avoid taxing his leg or doing anything that would make his body tense, and that included sex. It might have felt good while he was doing it, but he didn’t want to indulge if his body was going to be sorer at the end.

That didn’t mean he couldn’t touch himself…or touch Edy.

“It’s just six weeks, Al,” she said. Her hand went to one of her unfastened buttons, and he shooed it away.

“I wanna see.” He freed the last two buttons, and spread her shirt open wide.

She pressed an arm to her chest self-consciously, and he shooed that away, too.

  “I sag,” she said.

“You’re supposed to, and besides—I’ve already seen them. They’re all real and hanging just the way I like.”

And all his, if he had any say in the matter.

He pulled his dick free of his pants and scooted farther down the sofa cushion toward the edge so he could flatten his back a bit—so Edy would have a better view of what him looking at her body did to him.

Tightening his fist around his cock head, he glanced between her luscious breasts, to her beautifully flushed face, down to his organ.

So damn hard. Need to come.

“Have you ever gotten off in a woman’s cleavage?” Edy asked softly.

God damn. He sucked in some air and squeezed down the length of his shaft. “Have I tit-fucked someone? No. I guess most girls don’t seem to relish the possibility of getting jizz on their chins.”

“It’s not my favorite thing, either, but it’s no worse than having it all over my chest.”

His eyes damn near goggled. “Oh, fuck. Kill me now. That’s obviously what you’re trying to do.”

With the way his aching nuts felt at the moment, his death might have been imminent. That ache was probably going to travel straight up his spine and wrap around to his heart. Boom. Death by cardiac arrest and he hadn’t seen age thirty yet.

She chuckled and looked down at her breasts, bringing them together. “It’s fun to lick the head as it comes up. It’s like playing erotic whack-a-mole.”

“Edy…” he growled, and sucked in some more air through his clenched teeth. He tugged his cock harder, faster. Felt good, but he needed more.

“Give me your hand,” she said.

While pumping with his right one, he held up his left expecting her to put it on her breasts, but instead, she licked it. Not ladylike little flicks of her tongue, either, but broad swipes all over his palm and up his fingers.

  “Use that hand,” she said.

He did what she said and swapped it with the hand on his dick.

She leaned over him and swirled her fingertips along his weeping slit, then pulled his head into her mouth. The top of his fist tapped her chin with each tug, but she kept her lips sealed tight, and took even more of him into her mouth, leaving him little space to do much beside twist the base of his cock, and then not even that.

She moved his hand down to his nuts as if to say, “Here, play with those,” and took over stimulating his dick. She sucked, licked, and stroked, occasionally pulling her pale gaze up to his.

“Fuck, everything you do to me feels nice, Edy.”

Even if he wasn’t supposed to be doing it, strictly speaking.

She must have taken his words to heart, because she slid the fingers of her free hand between his legs and under his sac. Her eyes narrowed daringly at him as her fingertips breached his cheeks and her teeth skimmed enticingly along his swollen shaft.

Naturally, he tensed. He liked butt stuff as much as the next guy, but usually he was on the giving end rather than receiving.

He trusted her, though. Knew she was only interested in his pleasure, and whatever satisfaction she got from seeing him come apart.

She pressed against his hole and made long sucks up and down his shaft. Pressure built in his midsection, and that burn of warning tightened low in his hips.

He tried, and probably failed, to keep his legs from tensing, but given how his toes curled, there was no way he wasn’t going to hurt later. At the moment, he didn’t care.

When Edy’s finger breached him, he shouted, “Fuck!” and pounded the sofa cushions. His hips bucked, his leg throbbed, and his cock pulsed in her mouth.

She swallowed around his head and rolled her gaze up to him. There was satisfaction in it now, and not query, and she damn well should have been satisfied. He couldn’t remember coming that hard before, but then again, none of his partners had been anything like Edy. Beautiful and imaginative, Edy was his perfect lover.

  His perfect everything, really.

She let his cock fall from her mouth and backed away, dragging her tongue across her swollen lips. “So, no roommate, huh?”

He shook his head slowly and clenched when she freed her finger from his hole. “Unless…you’re volunteering for the job.”

She stood, and then padded to the kitchen. “I don’t know. I like having a roof that doesn’t leak.”

“I’ll get around to fixing that.”

“Until you do,” she called from the kitchen, where the sound of water ran in the background, “I’m content with maintaining residence right here.”

“You’d really live with me?” He pulled his sweatpants up and pushed himself a little more upright. Wriggling his toes, his shin gave a fuck you, ache.

He shrugged. The pain was gonna overtake the strength of the painkillers, but it was worth it, and what his doctor didn’t know wouldn’t kill him…even if it killed Al.

Edy returned with her shirt buttoned and hair pulled up into a messy knot. “I’ll think about it,” she said. “I mean, we’re still in the getting-to-know-you phase of our acquaintance, but…” She settled onto the cushion beside him and picked up the remote control. She flitted quickly through the channels—past the sports programming Al had been watching on and off for most of the day—and found a local news broadcast. “I might learn to tolerate you.”

“Just tolerate me? Damn, girl. What’s a guy gotta do to get into your good graces?”

She shrugged and crossed her ankles atop the coffee table. “Dunno. That’s a station people so rarely achieve. There isn’t a how-to manual yet.”

“Hopefully there’ll never be one. I like being on this pedestal all alone.”

“You just like the things I do with my mouth.”

“Well, yeah, your mouth is very nice. I like other parts of you, too, though.”

She laughed and pulled her cell phone out of her cleavage. “I bet. If you don’t mind, I’ll wait a little while to worry about dinner. Lunch was really late today. The thought of food right now makes my stomach turn.”

“Don’t worry about me. I’m a big boy. If I get hungry, I’ll figure something out. I’ve been taking care of myself for a lot of years, you know.”

She scoffed and tapped her thumbs against her phone screen. Probably sending a text message. “And doing a splendid job of it.”

“Hey, now. I know you well enough to know that tone is all sarcasm.”

“Just saying, you could do better.
You need management. Steering, I think.”

  “Me?” Sure do. Please volunteer.

  “Yep.”

  “How so?”

She set the phone on the coffee table, and turned to look at him, one dark eyebrow raised.

“Okay,” he conceded. “You don’t really need to explain it. I know I’m not good at making plans. Too often, I fly by the seat of my britches and it gets me in trouble a couple of months later.”

“At least you’re aware of the habit.”

“Yeah, I’m aware.” He swirled his thumb along her jaw and cheek, turning his hand over when she caressed it like a cat being stroked. She liked being touched, his Edy. At least, by him. He hoped he was the only man who mattered to her at the moment. But he was also under no pretenses that he wasn’t going to fuck up somehow. He would eventually. All men did, no matter how careful they were, because they never knew when they had their blinders on. They were ignorant to how stupid they actually were.

She kissed his hand, and the sensitive pulse point at the back of his wrist, and his cock stirred.

Shit. He adjusted himself and sent chilling thoughts down to his other head, not that it’d ever been that great at listening.

“Edy, you’re gonna mess me up tonight.”

“Stop making yourself so easy, then.”

“I’m not easy, just immobile. Be nice. I’ve got special needs.”

She giggled and laid her head against the side of his arm, rubbing his thigh in a way that wasn’t exactly sexual, but as pathetically hormonal as he was at the moment, it might as well have been.

He draped his arm over her side and smacked his laptop lid closed with his free hand.

He was sick of hearing the damn pinging from his chat app.

Wallace wanted to talk, and at the moment, Al didn’t have anything to say. There was nothing he wanted to share, and no plans he intended to make.

Al didn’t want to coach baseball, no matter how much of a bonus Wallace teased him with or how that money could speed up the work on his house by months.

Al wanted to heal his leg, hang out with his girl—and Edy was his girl, whether she knew it or not—and ponder expanding his teaching job in the fall to take over for the outgoing health instructor. His job would be far less flexible if he added the gig. He couldn’t bounce out of town on Thursday nights to meet athletics commitments.

And maybe he was getting to the point where that suited him just fine. He would have rather spent his weekends just like he was doing—connecting with someone who he liked a lot and not having to perform for anyone but her.

That was almost worth being broke.

  Chapter 11

Edy felt a bit like that crazy lady in the movie Misery when Al collected his crutches and hobbled his way out her front door.

He had stuff to do—she understood that—but over the past couple of weeks, she’d gotten used to going home from work to find a half-dressed Al camped out on her sofa or, sometimes, on her bed.

But, he was feeling better. His leg was on the mend, and he didn’t need so much medication. It made sense that he would go to his own place and take stock of what needed to be done, but that didn’t mean she had to like it.

She hated finding her house empty and Al’s living room clutter gone. It reminded her that she was on her own, and had been for too long.

But why does that have to be the case?

She kicked off her peep-toe heels, left her laptop bag by the door, stepped into some flip-flops, and walked back to her car.

Just because he wasn’t there didn’t mean she couldn’t see him, and she wasn’t going to wait for an invitation, either. Al made it very clear she didn’t need one. Consummate Southern girl that she was, she didn’t want to believe him, but she was going to test him and find out for sure.

She parked behind a little VW Beetle at the curb in front of his house and grabbed the bag of food off the passenger seat. If he seemed surprised to see her, at least she’d have an excuse—she’d just say she was checking up on him and making sure he was eating. Coming from her, it wouldn’t be so unusual.

She climbed the rickety stairs that groaned with each step, and let out a relieved breath when she made it up to the porch without incident.

Al was right. The house needed work, and soon.

She poised her fist to knock, but didn’t get a chance for it to land on the screen door’s frame.

A giggle met her ears as the storm door opened and a grinning blonde turned to face the exit.

“Oh!” the blonde said in a startled peep, and then laughed. “Lord have mercy, you scared me.”

“Obviously.” Edy gritted her teeth and waited for the blonde to make the connection. Edy knew her, so she most certainly knew Edy. The blonde was at almost every Roosters game, and for that matter, had probably done every single Rooster. Cameron and Al for certain.

The blonde narrowed her eyes and pointed at Edy. “You’re Wallace’s daughter.”

  Give the lady a prize.

Edy spread her lips into the sweetest grin she could manage. “In the flesh.”

Al appeared in the shadows behind Kit, his smile falling away as his gaze fixed on Edy. “Edy—”

Edy held up the bag. “I brought you dinner.”

  “Well, come in. Please.”

Kit giggled again, and though it was evident before that she had been trying to leave, she didn’t seem so interested in doing so at the moment. “I brought him some, too. Casserole. It’ll keep, though, I’m sure. He can eat whatever you brought.” She crinkled her nose, and Edy wanted to twist it off her face.

“Edy, come in.” Al canted his head toward the inside of the house.

“Oh, I don’t want to keep you.” In any way, at the moment. “I just wanted to bring this and some grant information I found.”

  “You found me grants?”

Edy gritted her teeth and murmured, “Mm-hmm.”

The blonde tilted her head in the way Edy generally only saw performed by Barbie dolls with sloppy head holes. “Grants for what?”

Al hobbled to the screen door pushed it out. “Why are you still standing out there? You didn’t leave the car running, did you? I know you didn’t really believe I was going to let you do a drop-and-dash.”

“If you’re busy, I don’t want to hold you up.”

“I’m not busy. I was just about to call you. I figured you’d left work. Didn’t want to distract you before then.”

“I’m going to see Wallace later,” Kit said to Al, looking to him hopefully, “so if you have a message you want me to pass along…”

“No message,” Al said, pushing the door a little more. “See you later, Kit.”

Edy grabbed the handle, and Kit squeezed through the gap.

“Do you need anything else?” Kit asked him from the porch, but her gaze was pinned on Edy.

“Nah,” Al said. “Thanks for coming over, but like I told you, you don’t really have to. I’m well taken care of. My mom stocked my freezer, and my grandma—bless her heart—has volunteered to drive me around.”

“Well, I just couldn’t bear to think of you all alone in this big house.” Kit rested a hand on his bicep and let it glide down his arm. A sharkish grin pulled at her lips.

Edy rolled her eyes, and Al must have caught it, because he snorted.

He batted Kit’s hand away—gently, but in a manner that left no room for doubt that he didn’t want it there—and looked at Edy. “Looks like you have a pie in the bottom of that bag. Do my eyes deceive me?”

  “Don’t worry, I didn’t make it.”

“I bet she knows where all the best places are to get pie,” Kit said with a giggle.

Edy glared at her, and Kit’s grin fell away.

“Uh, I just mean, you live around here, right? So you’d probably know the places.”

Al leaned into the doorway and let out a ragged breath. “Believe it or not, Kit, some women eat. I happen to like watching.”

You invitin’ me to stay?”

“No, I’m asking you to leave, unless you want to watch me watch my girlfriend eat pie. There’s just something about a woman in red lipstick putting a fork between her lips, I tell ya…” He grunted and shook his head. “Huge turn-on.”

Kit blinked rapidly for a few a seconds and looked from Al to Edy back to Al again.
