Impossible Things

She had never in her life gone outside without underwear on, much less naked under a coat, and she spent the ride paranoid that the driver knew. When they got to Lucas’ she hesitated. The entire house was dark, except for a small light on over the door. She gathered what little courage she had and told the driver not to wait for her.

Luckily, the gate was unlocked and she walked past Lucas’ sexy, red sports car in the drive and rang the doorbell. It took almost five minutes for the door to open, five very long and terrifying minutes, but then he was standing in front of her, clad only in the jeans that he had worn earlier.

His had been asleep she realized. His eyes were still clouded over and his hair was messed up and standing on end. “Lucy what’s wrong?”

“Are you alone?” she asked, and he nodded and said, “Of course.”

Her heart thundered in her chest and she felt faint with fear as she reached down and undid the belt of her coat. She pulled it back to reveal herself to him and his eyes went wide and he lost all traces of sleep. “Dear God!”

She smiled at him, smiled at the look of shock and desire that took over his gorgeous face, as he reached out and pulled her inside.

“What are you doing?” he asked and she felt sexy and powerful, two things that only he had ever been able to make her feel.

“I’m here to seduce you,” she said.

  And she did just that.

She pushed him back against the mahogany paneled wall as she pushed her coat off her shoulders. Her breasts met his bare chest and he groaned. He was already hard against her stomach and she gloried in that, in the fact that she could turn him on so quickly.

He leaned forward to kiss her but she pushed him back again and held him to the wall with one hand while with the other she pulled his boxer shorts down. When he was hard and throbbing in her hand he put his head back against the wall and closed his eyes. The veins in his neck stood out and his hands clenched into fists. She liked that he let her control him, that he let her control the situation. He had done that almost from the very beginning. He had given her as little or as much control as she wanted.

In fact now that she thought about it, almost everything he had done from the beginning had been geared towards her enjoyment.

She felt her heart swell then as she looked at him.

He had been kind and generous from the beginning, not just with jewels but with pleasure as well. He had given her more orgasms that she could count but more importantly he had given her the gift of helping her to discover her sexuality. She was starting to feel comfortable in her own skin for the first time in her life.

She was beginning to own her desires and she had him to thank for it. She leaned forward and kissed him on the lips. It was a closed mouth kiss of gratitude and not one of passion and he opened his eyes in surprise.

He looked at her in silence for a minute and then he said, “I love you.”

She wanted to say it to him, but it was still too early, and she wasn’t that brave yet, so she nodded and kissed him again, opening her mouth and sending her tongue out to find his.

He kissed her back, never touching her, his hands fisted tightly at his sides. She moved her mouth to his neck and licked the vein that was standing out. He shivered and she kissed his ear and bit down gently on the lobe. She felt his nipples harden and she reached down to twist one between her fingers. “Does that hurt?” she asked and he shook his head no.

She kissed her way down his neck, traced his collar bone with her tongue, lightly bit each of his nipples in turn and sent her tongue out to trace his belly button. She rubbed her cheek over the light scattering of black hair that dusted his chest and kissed and then ran her tongue along his hip bones.

His erection nudged her chin and she smiled. She turned her head, rubbed her cheek against the length of him and he groaned as she felt his hands come up to tangle in her hair.

  “Lucy…”

She looked up at him and his eyes were open and watching him. “You don’t have to,” he said.

“I want to. I enjoy giving you pleasure the way that you’ve given it to me.”

She ran her finger over the tip of him, picking up a drop of moisture and he groaned again before saying, “You give me pleasure just by being here.”

“But now I want to give you more,” she said and bent her head.

  Chapter Twenty-Five

When she woke up she didn’t know where she was. The room was dark and it took a minute for her to realize that the warm body pressed up against her was Lucas. She hadn’t meant to spend the night. That went beyond sex and slid into relationship territory and she wasn’t ready for that yet.

She slowly shifted so that she could get up without waking him but his hand moved and cupped her breast. He moved up against her back and she felt his erection pressing against her.

“I like waking up with you here,” he said in a sleep-roughened voice.

His mouth was against the back of her neck and his voice vibrated up and down her spine causing goose bumps to break out on her skin and her nipples to harden. His hand moved from her breast to her leg and then his fingers brushed against her.

Unconsciously she spread her legs and his fingers went in search of her. He found the spot that only he knew so well and she moved to her back to give him better access. He leaned down to kiss her shoulder and she felt her orgasm rising in waves just as the doorbell rang.

Afraid that he would leave her she grabbed his arm and whimpered but he reassured her, whispering, “I’m not going anywhere.”

She nodded and bit her lip, trying not to cry out. He leaned down and kissed her shoulder again and said, “You’re so beautiful.”

She rolled over and their eyes met and held, one hand holding on to his arm as the muscles in it flexed as he rubbed her in smaller and smaller circles until she came. Despite everything that they had shared, the things that had been said, and the many ways in which he had been inside her body, to Lucy that moment seemed the most intimate of them all.

Watching him, watching her, she felt the wall that she had built up between them begin to crumble.

The doorbell rang again and he kissed her again, got up and put on his pants. He looked back over his shoulder once before he left the room.

She didn’t know whether she should get up and get dressed or wait for him to come back. The part of her that wanted to keep him at a safe distance told her to get up, get dressed and go home, but the part of her that was slowly letting him in wanted to stay and wait for him to come back to bed so they could make love again.

She pulled the sheet up and rolled over to his pillow taking a deep breath to bring the smell of him into her lungs. She needed to get up and use the bathroom but she was too comfortable.

She was just starting to doze off again when Lucas came back into the room. His face was worried and she sat up, pulling the sheet to her chin. “What’s wrong?” she asked and watched as he began to open dresser drawers.

He pulled out a gray t-shirt and a pair of jogging pants and brought them over to the bed and handed them to her.

Not understanding she took them anyway and looked up at him as he said, “My mum is here.”

Her heart shuddered to a halt in her chest. She looked from his face to the floor, looking for her clothes, and then she remembered that she didn’t have any! She had come in her coat and nothing else, not even a pair of underwear.

Panicked, she looked up at him and he nodded at her, realizing that she had just remembered her lack of clothes. He went over to the dresser and pulled out another t-shirt, which he put on. She pulled the clothes that he had given her under the sheet and wiggled into the pants, which were far too loose and was just about to put the t-shirt on when she looked up. Standing in the doorway of the bedroom was Lucas’ mom.

Lucas’ back was to the door and he had no idea that she was standing there. Lucy and his mom stared at each other for a minute, neither saying anything and Lucy felt her face go white and then re
d with embarrassment.

When his mom cleared her throat Lucas jumped but instead of going towards her he went to the bed and pulled the spread up to cover Lucy. It was a telling gesture but neither Lucas nor Lucy realized it.

“Mum I said I’d be down in a minute.”

Lucy watched as his mom looked at him and with one black eyebrow arched said, “Yes darling but then I wondered what was taking you so long. I thought you might have gotten lost. I didn’t realize you had company.”

Lucas pulled the sheet up closer to Lucy’s neck and his mom smiled at the protective gesture. She moved into the room and held out her hand to Lucy. “Hello dear I’m Claire Antonelli.”

Lucy knew that her face was bright red as she carefully pulled her arm free from the covers and shook the older woman’s hand. “Lucy Jacobs.”

His mother backed away from the bed, a knowing smile on her face, and said, “I’ll be waiting downstairs for the two of you.”

She turned and walked away and the two of them remained silent, listening to the sound of her high heels descending the stairs. When they could no longer hear her heels Lucas sat down heavily on the bed next to Lucy. He leaned forward and put his head in his hands.

Lucy reached over and rubbed his back, “Sorry,” she said.

Surprised, he turned to look at her, “For what?”

She smiled and felt herself blush again, “For not wearing clothes, for attacking you last night, and for embarrassing you in front of your mom.”

He laughed, “Lucy you could never, ever, embarrass me. I’m sorry.”

  “For what?”

He looked so contrite that she reached out and touched his face. He bent his head and rubbed his cheek into her hand.

His mom’s voice rang out through the house, “I’m still waiting!”

Lucas shook his head and closed his eyes. “I’m sorry to subject you to her.”

She smiled at that and he kissed her hand. “You’ve been subjected to my mom, my grandmother and Rodrigo. I think I can handle your mom, I just wish I had my own clothes.”

He leaned forward, kissed her and whispered in her ear, “How about I go kick her out, come back up here and we spend the rest of the day in bed?”

“Don’t make me come back up there!” His mom yelled and Lucy laughed as Lucas groaned.

Neither the pants nor the shirt fit her but with a belt she was able to keep the pants up. The t-shirt was big and thin and she felt so self-conscious of her bare breasts that Lucas gave her the sweater that he had worn the night before to pull on over it. It still smelled like him and she bent her head when he wasn’t looking and breathed deeply.

They went down the stairs together, holding hands and when they entered the living room his mom raised an eyebrow at Lucy’s outfit but thankfully didn’t say anything.

They sat down on the couch across from her and Lucy was grateful for the warmth and reassurance of Lucas next to her. The couch was small and they were pressed thigh to thigh and shoulder to shoulder, but it made her feel a little braver as they faced his mom together.

“I ordered some lunch for us.”

“Lunch?” Lucas asked and looked down at the heavy, expensive watch on his wrist and Lucy followed his eyes. When they saw that it was a little after Noon they looked up at each other with shock on their faces.

“So Lucy why don’t you tell me about yourself?” his mom asked and Lucas made a sound and said, “Mum don’t quiz her!”

His mom raised her shoulders, “What? It’s not every day that I find a woman in your bed. I’d like to know a little more about her.”

Lucas shook his head and grabbed Lucy’s hand and patted it. “Don’t answer her and she’ll go away.”

Lucy looked from him to his mom and realized how much they looked alike. Her hair was lighter, more brown than black but their faces were similar and they had the same dark, green eyes.

His mom smiled at her and asked, “How did the two of you meet?”

Lucas made another noise but Lucy ignored him and said, “Rodrigo is married to my grandmother.”

His mom’s eyebrow rose again and she nodded. “I thought you looked familiar but I couldn’t place your face. Well….this is a small world.”

Lucy didn’t know if that was good or bad so she didn’t say anything. His mom continued to inspect her and she met her stare, not wanting to back down. “How long have the two of you been seeing each other,” she asked.

“None of your business,” Lucas said and at the same time that Lucy answered, “A few months.”

His mom smiled, “Well, well, a few months. I think that’s a new record for my son.”

“Mum…” Lucas said in a warning tone but she smiled even broader.

“You must be special if it’s been a few months.”

Lucas opened his mouth to speak and Lucy expected another warning but that wasn’t what he said. Instead he said, “I love her. I want her to marry me, and one day, if she wants, I want her to have my babies, at least one anyway.”

Lucy and his mom both turned to look at him in shock. Lucy knew that her mouth was hanging open but she didn’t care because she saw that the perfectly made-up mouth of his mom was also hanging open.

“Lucas-“Lucy started to say but he cut her off. “No. Don’t answer now. I’m not really asking you yet, I would never do it like this and I would never do it without the biggest diamond that you’ve ever seen. I just wanted you both to know my plans for us. I’m stating my intentions.”

She didn’t know what to say.

His mom was equally shocked but able to gain her composure quicker. She smiled at both of them and Lucy swore there was gratitude on his mom’s face as she looked at Lucy and said, “Welcome to the family.”

Lucas shook his head. “I’ve not asked yet and she hasn’t said yes. Don’t scare her off.”

His mom put her hand over her heart. “I swear I would never do that. I think I may want her to say yes more than you do.”

Lucas laughed and said, “That’s not possible.”

For the rest of the afternoon Lucy sat in her borrowed, ill-fitting clothes as Lucas and his mom joked and teased each other. His mom regaled Lucy with stories of Lucas as a boy and when his mom asked if he had ever mentioned his dad she was pleased when Lucy said yes.

Lucas refused to go to the attic and find pictures albums until his mom threatened to go do herself. He reluctantly went, dragging his feet and looking like a small boy.

He came back twenty minutes later, covered in dust and handed his mom two books. She made Lucy sit next to her as she flipped through them and Lucy was captivated by Lucas as a boy. He looked almost exactly the same except his hair was curly. She realized that it would still be curly now if he didn’t get it cut so close to his head.

It was a surprisingly good afternoon and time flew as they ate, talked and laughed. She only realized how late it was when the clock on the mantle struck six and she realized that no one at her grandmother’s house knew where she was. She said she had to go and Lucas said he’d drive her.

His mom stood, hugged and kissed her before they left and Lucy thought that his mom might have had tears in her eyes.

They got into the low-slung, red sports car and Lucy sighed and rubbed the leather of the seat. She didn’t feel worthy to be riding in such a car in Lucas’ work-out clothes. “This is a beautiful car,” she said and he smiled.

“Rodrigo has a car just like it but black. Did you get yours from his friend too?”

Lucas laughed. “I am his friend Lucy. This is my car.”

Not understanding she turned to look at him. She loved to watch him drive, his wrist, covered with a sprinkling of dark hair looked so masculine and sexy as he shifted. “What do you mean?”

“This is my car. I made this. My company did.”

  “What?”

He put on his turn single and turned down her grandmother’s street. “This is what I do, what my dad did, what my grandfather did. My grandfath
er started Antonelli motors. We make racing and sport cars.”

She looked down at the warm, tan, leather seat and rubbed her hand across it and then looked up at the dash and all the high tech meters on it. There was a crest sewn into the tan leather dashboard, with a small red A in the corner. She had probably seen that symbol a thousand times in her life and she had no idea what it stood for.

  “You make cars?”

“Not personally but I oversee the company. I used to let other people look after it for me because it reminded me too much of my dad but I knew that I would have to do it sooner or later.”
