'Til the End of Time

Taylor watched as his wife hugged their son-in-law and the babble of happy cries came from all around. Betta was a mother. How could that be? Surely it had only been yesterday that she and Meg had been little girls?

Laura slipped her arm around him and looked into his face. “Taylor?”

As he cleared his thoughts, his smile came and he lifted Laura and swung her around. “We have a granddaughter!” he said, laughing. “Another girl!”

Setting Laura back on her feet, he extended his hand to Chris. “Congratulations, Son,” he said quietly. The two men embraced for a moment, united in their love for the woman who had just given birth.

“So tell us everything Chris!” Betta said. “You two have been so secretive about names, have you given her one? How big is she? How is Betta?”

Chris ran one hand through his hair. “The doctor said she was seven pounds something, but I don’t remember. All I know is she’s beautiful, has dark hair like mine and brown eyes like Betta’s.”

Annie stomped her foot, “Chris! Does she have a name?”

“Of course she does, Annie! She’s Laura Rosina Flynn!”

The family voiced their approval of the name as the door swung open and the nurse came by with a bassinet holding a pink bundle. They all fell quiet and lined up along the hall as she pushed it slowly past and they each got a look at the newest member of the family. All of the women were in tears and the men not far behind as Chris walked proudly beside his daughter until she disappeared into the nursery.

Meg squeezed Jamie’s hand. In seven months, it would be their turn, but now was Chris and Betta’s time. Their news would wait.

Another chapter of the story that had started so long ago in Albuquerque had begun. The fateful moment that had brought Taylor and Laura together had changed so many lives. As she slipped her arm around Taylor’s waist and leaned into his shoulder, Laura realized that, through their daughters and granddaughters, the love they shared would last ’til the end of time.
