“I want you to hear me now,” he said softly, gently. Lavender shadows beneath his eyes made him look ancient. “We need a fierce leader. Someone not all consumed with diplomacy or protocol. Someone who will act. Someone who would die for her people. It may not feel like it and you may have doubts. But let me assure you, Majesty, you are Queen.”
Neala closed her eyes. He was right. Whatever she felt about herself, whatever vengeance she wanted, it would have to wait. She gave him a nod and straightened her spine. Sulking or running away would not honor her mother’s and sister’s deaths. The only way to honor them would be to make sure their deaths meant something. Finally, she took a breath and whispered, “I am Queen.”

Wendy Wang lives in Northern California with her husband, her chocolate lab mix Molly and two tortie cats Sophie and Arya. She has been writing stories since she was a child. Once she grew up and found a sensible job, she put all that aside but even during her 20-year career in customer and technical support she always had a story in her head. The characters just would not shut up, insisting she write down their stories and share them with the world. For the longest time she tried to ignore them but they persisted.
