A Question Worth Asking
Page 23
“So?” he asked, against her lips.
“Yes, I’d love to drive your Benz.” Prim beamed up at him, happiness wiping away the desolation he’d seen there not long before. “And I would love to be your wife.”
Joy such as he’d never expected coursed through him. He hadn’t realized how he’d worried over her answer. But he needed more now. More than he’d wanted when he initially asked her to marry him, more than he’d convinced himself he could settle for.
A trip home had shown him how much it mattered.
“Because?” he pressed. A question worth asking. A question he found he needed the answer to more than any other.
“Because I love you, too.”
A heavy sigh of relief nearly left him limp. “I knew it.”
“Of course, you did.”
Prim kissed him again before he had the chance to defend himself, but James just let it go. Though, he’d never let her go.
Ever.
Author’s Note
I so enjoyed writing Jamie’s story, maybe more than I should have. It was a joy researching the women’s rights movement and reading the articles written by the women who first fought for our right to vote.
When I first started developing Prim as a character—shy and meek on the outside, but full of passion beneath—I knew I had to give her a cause to fight for and believe in.
There was no better cause.
As for James, I’d always known since I dreamt up my MacKintosh lads years ago that he was going to be a loner. He, too, would need a cause to stand up for and that cause was Prim. In a family filled with strong-willed women, there can be no doubt he’d never take it as a blow to his masculinity to stand on equal ground with a woman. To find satisfaction in lifting her higher. The MacKintosh men are all the more manly, I think, for loving strong women.
The timeline for this series has become more interesting as time goes on. With the lapsing of time, I’ve already come to the end of the century. James has bought himself a car, something I hadn’t imagined happening when I started all this.
I can’t wait to see what is in store for the rest of the lads. For Connor. For Tam and Ian. For Colin even. There’s always the chance to love. And love again.
Thank you for reading. I hope you enjoy.
