“So I judge by your attire I won’t be getting you into any attics today?” Trent asked giving her a lopsided grin.

“Not today….school meeting, I wouldn’t have time to change.”

“Ok, why don’t we skip the houses today, we can just address your notes over breakfast.” He said offering his arm.

She looked up at him then turned to Beckett to gage his reaction. He smiled as took her hand in his.

“As long as you’re buying brother lead the way.” Beckett said tucking Baileys hand though his arm.

Bailey noticed the way Trent just laughed. “Fine….but you’re paying for lunch.”

  “Agreed.”

Bailey found breakfast to be quite entertaining. Now that she and Beckett had come to an arrangement Trent no longer flirted with her and Beckett was more relaxed. Over the meal Trent went over the notes she had dictated and though pointing out a few errors he found most of her findings sound. He complimented her on how quickly she learned and she knew he was sincere. Unable to take all the credit she explained that she had often helped her father on his jobsite and when he did repairs around the house she had been his shadow learning the trade from him. She even admitted that she did odd jobs around the apartment complex to offset the cost of her rent when she lived in California.

After breakfast they went back to the office where Trent passed her off to Ethan while he and Beckett went back into the field. Her grandmother’s car picked her up shortly after lunch and they arrive just in time for their one o’clock appointment. The principal explained that while they had the school records they had chosen to run a few tests on their own and found both children were to be placed in their advanced programs. Bailey was pleased but worried with his small frame Tristan might become a bigger target for the children’s teasing if he was placed in the gifted program. The principal assured her they had a zero tolerance for bullies and that he was sure Tristan would excel in the new programs. As promised Bailey was able to sit in on both their classes and afterschool as they rode home in the limo both children fought for attention as they explained the new classes and the friends they met. After a brief snack Bailey went up with them to their rooms to assist with homework. Once she was assured they were doing fine on their own she took the packets of paperwork and went to her own room to complete them. She completed her paperwork at the same time they completed theirs and with a few hours to spare before her dinner date she decided they should go for a ride. The groom assisted her in saddling the horses and as she led them out towards the field she was cautious keeping both children’s horses at her side. Beckett was waiting by the stable as they returned and she noticed the way Tristan stiffened when he saw him. She was about to question him when Beckett reached for the reins.

“Bailey…do you mind if I have a word with Tristan alone.” He said and by his expression she knew it was important. His look asked for her trust so she nodded as he helped her off her horse. He then lifted Alexis and waited for Bailey to lead her away before he turned to Tristan.

  Chapter 29

Beckett waited till he was certain Bailey and Alexis were out of earshot before he approached Tristan. He didn’t offer to help him down leaving him astride the mustang while the groom led the other horses away. He knew this gave Tristan the added height which would help his confidence as he looked down on Beckett.

“Tristan…I wanted to apologize to you man to man.” He said and watched as Tristan stared at him fighting back the anger he felt. “I told you I wouldn’t hurt your sister and I did.”

“You made her cry.” Tristan accused.

  “I know…I’m sorry.”

“Why did you make her cry?”

“I was afraid.” Beckett answered honestly and saw Tristan’s expression change from anger to curiosity.

  “What were you afraid of?”

“I was afraid that your sister wouldn’t want to be with me after we got married….I was afraid I would get hurt.”

“Bailey wouldn’t hurt you…..she never hurts anyone.”

“I know Tristan….but….sometimes….when people get together it doesn’t always work out the way they hope.” He explained. “Bailey would never intentionally hurt me…..just like I wouldn’t ever intentionally hurt her....but sometimes people just can’t prevent it.”

“Like when my daddy died and it made my mommy sad.”

  “Yes.”

Tristan frowned now as he thought about what Beckett had said and also about his life and his parents. Suddenly tears filled his eyes.

“A boy at school said I killed my mommy….he said she wouldn’t take the medicine because I was inside her.”

“No Tristan.” He said pulling the boy off the horse and hugging him as he cried. “Your mommy was very sick and she wanted to make sure you were born before she went to live with your daddy.” Beckett carried him away from the stable as the groom took his horse He held him till the tears stopped. Finally Tristan pulled back looking at Beckett trying to gauge if he could trust him. Finally he blurted out.

“That’s why Alexis hit him…..please don’t tell Bailey….I don’t want to make her cry.”

“I won’t, I promise.” He said sitting Tristan on the fence. “I am sorry Tristan that I broke my promise. Will you give me another chance?”

Tristan studied Beckett’s face. Beckett’s heart was wrenched from him again when he watched the play of emotions on Tristan’s face. The boy needed a male figure in his life, someone he could trust, someone to take over the load he felt he should carry. Finally Tristan nodded and spitting on his hand he held it to Beckett. Beckett smiled and spitting on his he grasped Tristan’s hand in his noting the way his small hand got lost in the grip.

“Tristan…I want you to promise me something…..if you ever need to talk to someone….or if anyone ever bothers you again…I want you to come to me…promise.”

  “I promise….can I tell Bailey though?”

“Of course I don’t want you to ever hide anything from Bailey….but I want to help too….so she doesn’t have to do it all…”

“Beckett…..Bailey won’t hurt you….she likes you too much.”

“She does.” Beckett smiled as he looked up to the house.

“Uh huh…she keeps changing her mind when she gets dressed…..and she spends all this time in the bathroom trying to smell pretty....do you think she smells pretty?”

“Every day.” He grinned as he put Tristan up on his shoulders. “And your sister could wear a potato sack and I would think she was beautiful.”

“Maybe you should tell her….and maybe you should bring her flowers, girls like that.”

“Maybe I will.” He smiled as Tristan continued to give him advice.

  “She likes daffodils…..and….tulips…”

  “Daffodils and tulips….not roses?”

“No…Bailey always said people are stupid to spend that much money….but she likes them when I pick them for her….she said it was because they were special….picked with love.”

“Well, then maybe we should pick some for her…I noticed your grandmother has a garden in the back.”

  “Will we get in trouble?”

“No, I don’t think so….will you help me?”

Bailey had to fight the urge to go out on the balcony to watch Beckett with Bailey. She needed to trust him sometime and she knew Tristan needed this time alone with another man. She showered and wrapped only in a towel she reapplied her makeup. She had just finished drying her hair when a knock came on her door. Thinking it to be Alexis or Tristan she opened the door without putting on a robe. To her surprise Beckett stood on the other side with a bouquet of freshly picked lavender tulips, yellow daffodils and white roses. He was dressed in another Dark Armani suit, crisp white shirt and Italian loafers. His hair was still wet from his shower and the musky scent of his cologne filled her senses. She felt the blush creep up her cheeks as his eyes roamed slowly over her body. When her eyes met his she saw a wicked grin spread across
his face.

“They did mention it was a formal dinner….while I love the look I’m not sure they will let us through the door.”

Bailey regained her composure as she looked at the flowers. “I was about to finish dressing, I thought you were Tristan or Alexis.”

“They’re both enjoying a game of aggravation with Ethan right now; these are for you. Tristan and I decided to raid your grandmother’s garden.” He said holding them out for her.

Bailey took them and smiled. “My favorites, thank you.”

“I would love to take full credit but Tristan thought I should bring you flowers…he said girls like that sort of thing.” He smiled lazily as he leaned against her door jam.

“Yes they do….what else did my brother advise?

“That I should tell you that you are beautiful, I told him you would be beautiful even in a potato sack….though the towel is a better touch.”

Bailey smelled the roses as she tried to hide the blush that now deepened. She turned grabbing the glass vase that stood on the nightstand. She carried it into the bathroom disposing of the old flowers first and replacing the water before she put the new bouquet in. When she turned she noticed Beckett had entered the room and was looking at the dresses she had laying on the bed. She still hadn’t decided which one she was going to wear.

“I like the black one.” Beckett said looking up as she placed the vase next to her bedside. He smiled when she met his eyes. “Tristan said you could never decide what to wear when we go out, wear the black. It’s simple, will show off you figure and enhance your eyes.”

Again Bailey blushed as she fingered the dress. They stood there a moment just staring at each other and Bailey knew if the bed was not between them she would be in his arms. As if he realized that too Beckett suddenly turned and headed for the door. He stopped before pulling it shut and glanced back at her.

“You truly are beautiful no matter what you wear.”

  Chapter 30

Beckett was not disappointed when he saw Bailey descend the stairs 15 minutes later in the black dress he had chosen. Off the shoulders with capped sleeves it clung to her body like a glove down to her mid thighs. The simple pumps with 4 inch heels elongated her legs and for a moment he envisioned her wearing nothing but those shoes. He met her at the base of the stairs as his brother let out a slow whistle. She blushed as she looked over at Trent then turned her attention back to Beckett.

“You will be the envy of every woman there and I need to make sure I don’t leave your side lest someone else try to steal you away.”

“Thank you.” She smiled gracefully accepting his compliment.

Beckett offered his arm and when she slid her hand through it he noticed the way her hand trembled. Placing his hand over hers he looked down at her and noticed for the first time she seemed nervous.

  “What’s wrong?”

“This dinner party will be our first introduction to Southern society.”

“Bailey they are no better than you or I…most of them are born into their money and they don’t know any other way. Just remember you are a Montgomery and your linage is longer than most of theirs.”

“There’s so much riding on this for your family.”

“Not really…our work will determine our success here, tonight just opens some doors.”

Bailey’s grandmother approached them now and her approval was obvious in her eyes. It had been arranged that Beckett’s family would ride together in one car and Bailey and Beckett would ride with her grandmother.

“Bailey…you are truly a vision, your parents would be proud.”

  “Thank you Grandmother.”

She turned to Beckett and held out a box. “Since we are trying to create an image for the two of you I believe you may need this.”

Beckett raised one eyebrow as he took the box and opened it. Bailey gasped as she looked at the antique ring inside. Set in platinum was a two carrot purple sapphire. The band was made of tiny diamonds that led to a filigree raised design with a heart inlaid with diamond chips on each side.

“The ring had been in the family for five generations. It is given to the first born daughter of the oldest son and since Braxton did not have a daughter it is my choice as to which granddaughter it is passed down too….I figure this would make a perfect engagement ring.”

Beckett removed it and looked at Bailey whose eyes were now watering at her grandmothers words. Taking her left hand he slid the ring on her finger and it fit as if it was made for her. As he held her hand her eyes flew from the ring to his face.

“I guess this makes it official.” He smiled. “Unless you would prefer a different ring?”

“No.” Bailey said admiring the color of the stone and the way it reflected the light. “This is beautiful.”

“Good.” Regina nodded. “And I’m ensured it stays in the family when you two go your separate ways.” She said turning as she headed for the door.

Beckett felt Bailey flinch at her comment and his eyes now looked to her face. The joy in her eyes was replaced by a hint of sadness and not wanting to wreck the evening he leaned over and whispered in her ear.

“Only you and I will decide our fate.”

She looked up at him and her lips were only inches from his. Unable to resist he pressed his lips to hers savoring the softness as his mouth slowly explored hers. At the sound of his father clearing his throat Beckett pulled back and noticed Regina had stopped at the door and was now staring at the two. He felt Bailey tense and trying to smooth things over he grinned wickedly at Regina.

“We were just practicing….we need to be convincing before our audience.”

Regina simple raised one eyebrow then turning she walked out to the car. Beckett heard Bailey release the breath she was holding and gave her hand a squeeze as he once again slid it thru his arm.

“Practicing….so that’s what they call it these days.” Trent said smiling as he walked passed them and followed Regina out the door. Beckett’s parents and brothers followed next leaving him and Bailey to bring up the rear. He held her back for a moment to ensure she was ok.

  “I’m sorry…I couldn’t resist.”

“The kiss or the comment to my grandmother?” She asked.

“Both.” He said as he led her outside. “I fear I may have to do that again before the nights out.”

“Taunting my grandmother?” She asked with a smile.

“No…I think I’ll call a truce there.” He grinned as they approached the SUV implying he intended to kiss her again before the night was out. He watched her blush as she met his gaze then quickly slid inside the car opposite her grandmother. Beckett climbed in settling down in the seat next to her. He could feel the warmth of her body next to him and it took every ounce of will power not to pull her onto his lap and devour her lips. Instead he took her hand in his giving him the satisfaction knowing she was just as affected as he was by the way her pulse race beneath his fingers. As they rode to the party Regina discussed the people who would be attending and the importance of first impressions. She would escort them around making the proper introductions to the most influential people in attendance. She had already talked to the host and made sure Beckett and Bailey were seated at the main table while his family was dispersed among the other guests. Beckett felt Bailey tense when Regina announced she would also be meeting the rest of the family. Other than Jasper the rest of the Montgomery family had maintained a safe distance. Noticing Bailey’s agitation Regina informed her.

“I’ve already had a family meeting….they all know the consequences if tonight’s affair does go well for the Birmingham’s….all will be on their best behavior.”

“Will Jasper be there?” Bailey asked her face still white.

“No….your future family has taken care of that matter.” Regina said looking directly at Beckett.

He narrowed his eyes. “Do I hear a note of objection in that comment?”

“Jasper deserved what he got.” She replied.
It is just unfortunate that you and your brothers had to make it so public.”

“He was given the opportunity to take it outside….we covered the damage that was done and Jasper now understands I will not tolerate him touching or threatening my future wife.” He said as he squeezed Baileys hand in support. “If his conduct had been addressed when it first appeared than what my brothers and I did would not have been necessary.”

“That is true…but you must remember Beckett…while the men of the South expect their women to be gentile and docile, they also consider them no better than their other property…..there are those you will meet tonight that were friends of Jaspers and didn’t take kindly to the fact he has been run out of town….I warn you of this because they may choose to use tonight to discredit you and your family.”

“As long as their comments are not targeted at Bailey then my family will hold their own…however I will not guarantee our reaction of Bailey is slighted in any way.”

Regina smiled satisfied with his comment. As Beckett studied her he was reminded again that she seemed to be playing her own game in this and while he was playing his pieces she was constantly changing the rules. As the SUV now turned off the main road they came to a stop next to a guard tower. The driver pulled out the invitation and was waived through the main gates by the security team.
