Big Jim 3

“I didn’t want to confuse the sheriff,” grinned Jim. “He already had a lot on his mind.”

“Where’ll you go now, Big Jim?” asked Waldo.

“East a ways,” shrugged Jim. “I still aim to find the hombre that gunned my kid brother. When I talked to the sheriff about it—described this killer to him—he said nobody of that description has passed through Byrne City. So I’ll pass up Byrne City and ride east.” He flashed the newlyweds a grin of approval, tipped his Stetson to the bride, then lit his cigarette, and said, “Hasta la vista.”

  “Adios,” grinned Benito.

They wheeled their mounts and rode away from Box G—the tall man on the high-stepping black stallion, the runty Mex on the plodding burro. Big Jim had defeated four desperadoes in savage conflict, but these men had not been his own quarry. The killer of Christopher Rand was still at large and, until he was brought to justice, Big Jim would continue to search the arid and isolated trouble spots of the sprawling Southwest.
