Ben sighs and buries his face into a pillow. I feel bad reminding him, but it’s important for him to keep trying to repair things with them. He’s talked to them once or twice on the phone, stilted, awkward conversations that didn’t last longer than ten minutes. Still, it’s Ben’s family. One day they won’t be so disappointed in his choice, and when that day comes, I want them to still be speaking, so Ben can see it for himself.

  “I’d rather come see you.”

“I’d rather you come see me, too. But you need to see them. And once I’m back in Arlington, I won’t want to let you go.”

He kisses my shoulder, the side of my neck, my cheek, and the corner of my mouth. “I love you.”

  “I know.”

“I can’t imagine ever loving someone else the way I love you.”

My eyes water. “I know.” And I feel the same way— This just feels so right. There will never be a more right person, a more right love than this one.

“We can’t promise forever just yet.” He brushes a strand of hair out of my eyes.

  “Not yet.”

He chuckles. “I mean, I can’t promise I can afford groceries next week, so big life commitments should probably wait. But I promise one day I will promise you forever. I’ll change your life, Hannah.”

I hold his face in my hands, full of all the love bubbling up in me. “You already have.”

  Acknowledgments

A year and a half ago, I was on a business trip in a college town that will remain unnamed. On my morning off, I took a stroll through the charming downtown district and found my way into a great used bookstore. As I browsed, a college boy in glasses came in, slipped behind the counter, plugged his iPod into the store sound system, and started his shift. I hopped on twitter and described the scene, which felt like the opening of a romance novel. My timeline thought it would make a good book, too. I kept waiting for the heroine to enter and the scene to begin, so on my flight home, I started outlining the story, which became This Book Will Change Your Life.

Many thanks to my encouraging friends on twitter, that lovely college town, that magical used bookstore, and that boy in glasses who has no idea that he sparked a novel when he came to work that day.

I owe a tremendous debt to Anne Forlines for early editorial feedback and support. Many thanks as well to Jennifer deSylva, Sara Mizzen, and Denise Cataudella for pre-reading, feedback, and prosecco. Always prosecco.

Thank you to Stephen Morgan, my fantastic editor at Entangled. Working on this book with him has been such an amazing experience!
