In some cases, quotations have been taken from newspapers, articles or editorials reprinted in such volumes as Moore’s Rebellion Record. All prominent papers of Charleston, S.C., Chicago, Cincinnati, New York, and Richmond, Va., have been directly consulted. In addition, other papers such as Harper’s Weekly, London Times, and Washington (Ark.) Telegraph for the war years have been used, as have articles in postwar papers up to the present time.
