“Big.” He flashed a grin before his face fell and his eyes returned to the trail.

“Could we even have a family?” All the love we had and the thought that sharing it would be denied to us — it hurt. I needed that future right now. Just the possibility alone might keep me going through this war.

“Don’t worry, there are special ways for our people to give birth that you don’t know about.” He looked me up and down. “You’re exhausted.”

Children were possible for us? The thought drove me mad with excitement. “No, I’m—”

He pointed to a small group of trees. “We’ll rest here for a few hours.”

Andrew and Magnus trotted up behind us. They sniffed the air, noses raised.

“Go ahead twenty lengths and find a safe spot. Eyes open, wolves!” Buck whispered.

They nodded, satisfied the area was safe for the moment, and took off once more.

The idea of having his baby was such a turn on — my cock swelled at the thought. That he could see such a future for us and that somehow I could give birth was incredibly sexy.

I kneeled under cover of low-hanging branches, the gentle moonlight fracturing through the fernlike leaves.

“Get some rest. I’ll keep watch over you through the night.” My beautiful Buck kissed me gently on the forehead.

My eyelids drooped and I couldn’t think straight. I needed to sleep. But with Buck beside me, I couldn’t miss my chance.

“I’m going back ten lengths to keep watch. They’ve got our front. I’ll see you in—”

I motioned with my index finger and Buck obliged, an eyebrow raised. I grabbed his thick wrist and tugged him down. I curled my hand around the back of his neck and pulled him in for a deep kiss.

He growled with contentment and it made my cock stiffen. I loved the earthy taste of him against my lips. His tongue eagerly filled my mouth, so much that I thought I might choke.

He broke off and glanced ahead, suddenly tense.

But the forest was silent. I slid directly under him and tilted my head down, biting my bottom lip to show my submission. He couldn’t resist me like this.

He planted his strong arm beside my head and leaned in, his hot breath washing over my neck. He buried his face against me and he inhaled my scent.

I closed my eyes and arched my neck back, surrendering to him, my hands clasping his broad back as our lips met again. The weight of his body crushed me, dominated me.

We both longed for this burst of passion. In a way, it was my contribution to the wolves’ war effort. They needed Buck at his best should the pumas manage to find us. If I could release his tension, I might be useful for once.

But more than that, if these were the last days we had together then I wanted to make them magical. I wanted my fill of him while I could still get it.

I ran my fingers down the bulging swell of his bicep and caressed the thick hairs on his forearm as his stubble scratched my soft skin. I moaned gently into the night and he muffled my mouth with his.

I grabbed a fistful of his dark hair and pulled it tight. I wanted it rough and this was how I got it. He bit my neck and his hands clamped onto my lithe, slight body. His lust pressed into me.

“I want you,” I whispered into his ear. I grabbed his ass and pushed him into me. I needed his flesh.

He groaned and obliged me, the pressure as unbearable as my passion.

“Take me.” I dug my fingers into his pants, squeezed his ass and parted my legs.

He placed his large hand over my chest and pressed down, my heart beating manically. He dragged his hand down the middle of my body until it reached my inner thigh. I groaned as his fingers curled around my leg. He deftly unclasped my belt and pulled down my pants and boxers, revealing my burning organ to the cool air.

I rose involuntarily to him, ready for what came next.

He moved up and took my cock and balls in his mouth. “These are mine,” he growled, his hot breath brushing against my damp balls.

  “All yours,” I whispered.

He smiled as he took me in his hand and started to run up and down the shaft, twisting it this way and that, stroking the mushroom tip with his thumb.

I writhed at the overwhelming pleasure, my mind almost cracking with the sheer delight that was blooming within. Inches from my cock, his mouth dripped saliva onto me, his hand washing it over to lubricate my cock and make it glisten in the moonlight.

His lips found it and he devoured me, every inch. My mouth hung open as my mind danced to the rhythm of the vibrations that were coursing through my body. I quivered as his teeth nibbled my sensitive tip and my body shivered when he rose and exposed my slick erection to the cold night air, before warming it again.

He looked at me with a gleam in his eye as he sucked deep and hard. The sight of him hanging on my cock was amazing. He’d never looked more beautiful. I cradled his head with one hand and the other roamed about the ground, fingers digging into the dirt as I tried to process the pleasure.

A gasping moan escaped my lips and my body convulsed. “I’m cumming.”

He lifted his head at the final moment, watching the cum shoot up and splatter all over my stomach.

“You’re such a messy boy,” he said with a teasing smile as he slid up my body and kissed me. The hot cum sizzled on my body and, in my weakened state, I murmured gently, feeling the thick cream ooze over my skin. I gave him my mouth and in the depth of the night he took the kisses that I offered. For those short moments, I forgot about the war and the pumas. I was blissfully helpless below him.

We kissed and he placed his fingers in my mouth. I sucked eagerly, his eyes never wavering from me. His fingers soaked in my saliva, he grinned and bit my lip. He reached down and ran his fingers around the rim of my asshole, wetting it. He darted a finger in and my heart skipped a beat. His other hand cradled my head and he whispered sweet nothings in my ear as his slender fingers entered me and opened me up, a prelude to an invasion that I welcomed.

  “Fuck me, Buck. Own me.”

The grunt rose from deep inside him, echoed in his chest and through mine. I let my arms fall to the side, limp. His towering body rose and held me like a rag doll. He pushed my legs apart with his knees and pulled out his thick cock.

That glorious thing got bigger each time I saw it. I couldn’t believe I’d survived being fucked by it so many times. I lay back and stared up at the stars. He thrust his big cock into my tight ass and I strained as the familiar, exquisite pain passed over me.

He angled his body over me, mouth open, pinning my arms down as he slowly fucked me. His eyes merged with the stars as the sweet bliss came over me.

“Faster. Deeper.” I wanted his force to break me in two. I didn’t want this night to end, especially if it was our last. Without him, I’d be so alone.

I wanted him to keep fucking me forever and in those moments when his cock was inside me I could almost see eternity. Like the dirty sinner I was, I begged for more. I took his hand and placed it over my neck. I wanted him to choke me, to completely dominate me. I placed my life in his hands.

Buck fucked me hard, driving me into the ground, the moist soil under my naked flesh, like an animal. I could almost see my own heart beating as my body spasmed to Buck’s rhythm. This was as close to being a werewolf as I’d ever felt.

He tossed me and I was on top of him. I held his arms against my back, his immense hands clutching me close to his body. He took my undersized human frame and fucked me up the ass while I straddled him. I tried to pepper him with kisses even as the sensations coursing through my body became too strong to bear.

The orgasm rose within us both. My eyes went wide and I flung myself up, riding his predator cock. His hands slid across my slim chest, playing with my nipples. I craved his sweet release and, even though my ass was sore, I couldn’t live without his cock inside me. I opened my mouth to shout and he clamped his hand over my face.

“We have to be quiet.” Buck held a finger to his m
outh, his strong cheekbones prominent in the soft moonlight.

The imminent danger of puma attack in this dark forest only added to the intensity of the moment. His volcano erupted inside me, complete serenity enveloped me and I submerged in another realm.

He held me. We kissed and he withdrew from me. But our connection remained.

“Get some rest. We have a big day tomorrow. It’s my turn to take watch.”

“Stay.” I didn’t want him to leave me. I wanted to fall asleep to the sound of his heart and the rhythm of his breathing.

He rose, let go of my hand and turned away from me. “After we get you to the sanctuary, it may be a while before you see me again.”

“Why?” The words caught in my throat and I choked with every breath. I couldn’t stand the thought I might never see him again.

“I must return to my land and defend the pack. I’ll be standing side by side with my brother fighting for what the fathers before us held sacred.”

I wanted to say that I understood, and I did to some degree, but all I wanted was for him to stay with me. I wanted to tell him that I needed him and that I couldn’t make it through this without him.

  But that was unfair.

I held my tongue and he walked down the path the way we’d come. A moment ago, I couldn’t have been happier. Now I was confused. Buck saw a future with me. But he also said we might not see each other for a long time.

  It shouldn’t be like this!

I hated the wolves, the pumas and, most of all, the stupid prophecy. I wanted to leave it all behind, just be with him and have our children. Because if Buck returned to fight, I was certain I’d never see him again.

I pulled the sleeping mat from my pack and rolled it out. I lay down on it, a tree root protruding into my ribs, and closed my eyes.

  ***

“Good morning.” I searched Buck’s back for any softening of his attitude towards me. But he said nothing. I hadn’t returned the depth of his words last night. He’d declared his love for me and I’d remained silent. I missed his affectionate manner. He was serious now.

I continued down the trail, Buck a few steps ahead, Andrew and Magnus behind. The harsh morning sun blinded me and I squinted against it. The forest was thinner here and a river ran along it, the distant roar of a waterfall promising a moment of rest.

“How much farther is it?” Nightmarish visions of the pumas skewering and disemboweling Buck and Japheth still tortured me from my fitful sleep last night. I wanted to get to the sanctuary and hold Buck with me there, safe and sound.

Buck had guided us from one trail to another early this morning, through thick forest. Somehow, he knew exactly where to go. What would it be like to have his enhanced senses, to know how this group of green trees and colorful foliage was different from all the rest we’d passed on our journey?

“Just over the clearing. We’re almost there.” I didn’t know what was so safe about this place that Buck was taking me to. I only hoped that we could all be free from the wrath of the pumas there.

Buck stopped short and scanned the forest to our right. The other wolves froze as well.

  “What?” I asked.

“Move!” Buck flung himself at me and I fell backwards.

The air exploded next to my ear and a spear appeared in a tree trunk next to Buck, its shaft twanging back and forth.

My three protectors formed a semicircle around me, swords drawn. I turned to see where the spear had come from but the woods were still. The sunlight filtered through the thick trees, casting everything in a green glow.

I looked closer and my eyes adjusted to the light. More than a dozen dark-furred pumas surrounded us. My breath caught in my throat and Buck stepped in front of me.

The trees parted behind us and more pumas poured in, some dangling from branches, others on their haunches, their incisors bared, their merciless green eyes studying us.

One stepped forward from the group, rose onto its hind legs and transformed into a haggard old queen.

  CHAPTER 3

“We mean no harm. And we are well within the neutral zone.” Buck’s voice was steady — steadier than I thought possible.

A dozen transformed puma guards, their hair dark and short, their bodies lithe and flexible, formed a semicircle behind the queen, bone necklaces hanging on their chests and bloodlust in their eyes.

This was certain death for us. They could take us at any moment.

I wrapped my fingers around the dagger at my lower back but it was a futile gesture. I was useless in a fight like this. I opened my mouth to speak and Buck grabbed my shoulder.

“Lies!” the queen hissed. A guard handed her a small bag. She opened it to reveal the wizened head of the puma princess. “Is this an example of your ‘no harm?’”

My breath stuck in my throat at the sight of the princess, her eyes rolled back, her skin now deathly pale. A hint of her beauty yet remained.

The queen, too, was beautiful, despite her age and the savage harshness of her face. Her raven hair flowed down to the middle of her back and her exotic eyes held within them not the least hint of mercy.

Once she’d been a loving woman, a princess like her own lost daughter. That was gone now. Despite her diminutive stature and supple form, she exuded a commanding aura. A jeweled jade necklace hung around her neck and plunged into her cleavage.

More pumas arrived on all sides. I turned and a group came out of the forest behind us. This was the end of my life. I only hoped the queen might show me some mercy so that, with my final words, I could tell Buck that I loved him, too.

But this queen was not the merciful kind.

“The chosen one comes with us. And perhaps we shall allow one of you to live another day.” A wicked smile curved on her face.

Buck firmed his grip on my shoulder. His other hand tensed on his sword. “Never.”

“An eye for an eye — is that not the way of your people?” Her upper lip curled.

“But it is not the way of your people, is it, honored Queen Selima?” Buck swallowed hard and measured his breathing.

There was no way he’d make it out of here alive. My heart wept for my Buck. I’d doomed him with the princess and now I’d doomed our love by remaining silent at the wrong moment. I died to tell him now that I loved him.

“Your words mean nothing!” She spat on the ground. “Who will replace my loving daughter?” A half-dozen puma guards jumped forward, their spears at the ready.

“She crossed into enemy territory. She knew the law, as do you.” Strong but not overbearing, if anyone could handle this it was my Buck.

“She would not have crossed it without good reason.”

“There was a time when our people were friends. There was a time when we worked hand in hand against common enemies. Let us return to that time now, as the darkness of war looms ahead.”

“We have to take them now,” Andrew whispered. “It’s our only chance to die with honor.”

Buck hushed him with a flick of his hand.

“You speak pretty words, as your father did before you,” the queen said. “But you’re not half the man he was. Give me the special one and we may yet spare some of your women and children to serve us.” The pumas behind her stepped in closer, their spears and swords drawn, their faces grim.

I cleared my throat. “Maybe I should go to them. There's no reason to—”

Buck glanced in my direction without looking away from the queen. “Over my dead body.” He turned back to the puma leader. “At least tell me how you found us.”

She smirked. “As you say, there was a time when we were friends. It seems that some of your kind prefer puma protection to this outsider who contaminates your pack.”

Andrew growled. “There’s a traitor among us. One of us must survive. One of us has to get this news back to the pack.”

Rage roiled up within me and the memory of Elijah flashed in my mind. He’d had Buck’s attentions before me. He wanted me gone. It was him. It ha
d to be. He’d killed my beautiful Buck. I wanted nothing more in this life but my revenge.

But I didn’t think I’d get it and my bitterness only multiplied.

The pumas pushed forward, swords raised above their heads. Three came at me, their spears poised to puncture my heart. Behind us, the trees rustled and the pumas blocked out the sun.

  CHAPTER 4

  “What now?” I screamed.

Buck stepped in front of me and took a battle stance, arms raised in front of him, one foot back, one foot forward. “Look for your opening. Run if you can,” he whispered.

  “Buck?” Andrew called.

“Back. Back down the trail.” Buck placed an arm around me and pushed me back the way we’d come.

“Back, you beast. Step out of our way if you want to live!” Andrew screamed. He made a move toward the pumas that blocked his path but they did not flinch.

“Guys?” Magnus hesitated, his sword raised but his posture unsteady.

“Wolves strong!” Buck screamed. “Remember your training!”

Pumas transformed into men around us. They attacked, their bladed weapons cutting the air. The life went out of me and I gave up hope entirely. If the wolves were scared, what chance did I, a lowly human, have?

Two pumas took Buck, their swords slashing for his neck and gut. He ducked to avoid the first and rolled away from the next, his muscles rippling with each adroit move.

“Watch out, Nathan!” Buck rolled in front of me and stood tall.

A whistling rent the air. A spear flew toward us. Panicked, I fell backwards and the missile lodged in my love’s shoulder.

Buck collapsed to the ground next to me, his eyes dull, his body limp.

“But that was for me!” I screamed. I grabbed the smooth wooden shaft of the puma weapon and pulled.

Buck screamed. The damned thing had gone all the way through. The studded metal point stuck out the other side.

“Find your opening, Nathan. Warn the pack. Go! I will distract them!”

I caressed his cheek. “I can’t leave you, Buck! Without you, I have no—”

“Go!” He pushed my arm, rose and screamed. He ripped the spear from his shoulder, his blood and flesh splattering me. He rammed the sharp rod three deep into the puma ranks.
