“The laws are the place to start,” Dad answered.
Joe came back into the room carrying a couple of bowls of tortilla chips and a bowl of salsa. He deposited them on the coffee table.
Aunt Trudy leaped to her feet. “What are you doing?” she exclaimed.
“Getting us some snacks,” Joe said. “And I know we just ate dinner. And dinner was great. But now it’s snack time.”
“If snacks need to be gotten in this house, I’ll do the getting,” Aunt Trudy told us. “Those two boys on the exchange program—Jamie and Andrew—would never let me do a thing! They even made my bed. It was weird, I tell you. Especially the way they walked around looking at the floor all the time.”
Joe plopped down on the floor and snagged a chip. “You want to serve me stuff, I have no problem with it,” he said to Aunt Trudy. “In fact, I could use an orange soda.”
Aunt Trudy made like she was going to get up—and then she plopped back down again. “Sorry, Joe—I hang up my servant hat after eight p.m.”
Now that’s what I’m talking about. It was good to be home.
