Angelina believed him, for even as she felt herself transported from one plane of pleasure to the next, Drew began to shudder, groaning harshly in her ear, until he collapsed on top of her. Angelina closed her eyes and reveled in her response and the wondrous feeling of his body covering hers. She’d never felt safer or more cherished in her life.

“Are you okay?” he asked in a tender whisper, kissing her cheek, her throat, her collarbone.

“I’m perfect,” she answered. “And FYI, that was all me. No drugs.”

As he rose and turned her into his arms for a kiss, Drew chuckled. “I beg your pardon, I think I had a little something to do with it.”

“Well…maybe just a little,” she grinned, holding her fingers about an inch apart.

Angelina and Drew’s days settled into a comfortable routine. They both worked at their respective jobs, meeting for lunch when they could and going home in the evenings together. Their nights were anything but ordinary. His seeming hunger for her fed Angelina’s insatiable appetite for him. At times, she felt as if she’d been released from captivity all over again. The freedom to touch, to enjoy, and yes, to love was exhilarating.

When she had a few minutes to spare, she downloaded a kindle book on how to give a guy a blowjob. Following her lover’s example, she checked the back of the book, then giggled. “Well, this book would be Drew-approved, there’s definitely a happy ending.” Settling down in an easy chair, she began a study of the act. Getting into in, she wasn’t aware when the door opened and she was no longer alone.

Drew entered the den to find Angelina curled up in an easy chair. He was about to speak to her when he noticed her mouth. She had it opened in a perfect O, then she began to move her lips, swirling her tongue around. He smiled, she looked like a little fish blowing bubbles. “Whatcha doin, pretty-girl?”

  “What!?”

She jerked, bounced, and threw her kindle straight up into air. Drew did some fancy footwork to keep it from hitting the ground. “Are you reading something exciting?” He started to look at her screen and she squealed like a little rabbit.

  “No, Drew! That’s private!”

“Uh-huh, private. Are you reading porn, Dr. Montoya?”

“No, no, no porn.” She shook her head from side to side really fast. “I’m researching…something I plan on giving you as a surprise.”

“I love surprises.” He bit on his lower lip, imagining what she could’ve been reading. “Will I like it?”

A look of momentary disquiet colored her features. “I hope so.”

“I’m sure I will, I love everything you do.”

She just wished he could love her too.

Angelina hated to be greedy. Drew was so good to her. She just wanted this to last forever, but in all the time they’d shared, he’d never once offered words of love. One of these days, she would tell him, there was no way she could keep from uttering the greatest truth she’d ever known.

A few days later, they were sitting in the kitchen finishing a slice of Hattie’s apple pie and watching the play of lightning across the countryside. “The new technicians are working out well. Gemma especially shows promise,” Angelina informed him. “She’s researching how to produce an antibody small enough to cross the brain-blood barrier. If we could do that, a cure could possibly be achieved within a decade.”

A decade. Did he have a decade? “Interesting. How would you like to take a moonlight ride tonight?”

“On a horse? A storm is raging outside and there’s no moon in sight.”

“So? Why would you want to ride a horse when you have me?” Drew looked askance.

“I have no idea.” She smiled at him, letting him pull her to her feet. Before they could reach the stairs, Drew’s phone buzzed.

“Dang it!” Seeing the name on the ID, he glanced at Angelina. “It’s Ky.”

  “Hello?”

“Drew, I’m so sorry to bother you, but we’re in a bind.”

“What’s wrong?” Drew stopped on the bottom step of the stairs, his eyes clashing with Angelina’s. “Is it Cooper?”

“Yea, she’s in labor. I think she has been for a while, but she didn’t tell me. She thought it was Braxton-Hicks. I hate to ask you this, after the way we acted about getting a new doctor, but I don’t think we’ll make it to Nacogdoches before the baby comes.”

“How far apart are the contractions?”

  “About two minutes apart.”

“No, you don’t need to be making an hour’s drive in this weather by any means. Head to the clinic. I’ll meet you there. Do I need to send an ambulance?”

“No. We can make it to the clinic just fine.” There was a pause. “And Drew, I’m sorry, man.”

  “No worries. Drive safely.”

“I’m coming with you.” Angelina ran to find a couple of umbrellas.

“All right. Let’s hurry.” They braved the rain and ran to the truck. “One of these days, I’m going to buck the Historical society and have an attached garage built for you.”

“I’d like that,” Angelina admitted as she fastened her seat belt. She clung to any reference he made of a future together. “Although, I have to admit I don’t mind getting wet.”

He gave her a wink. “I know you don’t. I noticed that last night in bed.”

“Be serious. You’re about to bring a new life into the world,” she chastised him, loving every second of their banter.

When they reached the hospital, Ky was driving in alongside them. Angelina rushed in to alert the nurse on duty so a wheelchair could be brought for Cooper. When she returned, Ky was helping Cooper from his truck. Her face was contorted in pain. “Ouch! Ouch! You’re sleeping in the spare bedroom permanently Kyler Landon!”

He swung her up in his arms. “Only if you sleep in there with me, treasure.”

“Call Ty and Aliyah, I want them here too,” Cooper ordered anyone who was listening.

“I’ll do it,” Angelina offered, stepping away to make the call.

Drew held the door for them, noticing Ky’s worried look. “Everything will be fine. Cooper and I will have this baby here before you know it.”

Angelina followed along as Cooper was placed into the wheelchair and escorted back to the delivery room. When Drew came to the double doors, he stopped. “Do you plan on coming in for the birth?”

Ky let out a long breath. “She wants me there.”

“Good enough.” Drew gave him a reassuring smile. “Let me get her prepped, Ky, then we’ll come get you.”

When Angelina and Ky were alone, she placed a comforting hand on his arm. “Everything will be fine. Cooper is strong, the baby is healthy, and Drew is very good at his job.”

“I know he is.” Ky took off his hat and slapped it against his thigh. “I just hate I treated him like shit after what he went through…whatever the hell he went through.”

Angelina hated to admit she still had no idea what happened. “I know you do. I’m sorry to say that he hasn’t confided in me either. For a while, I thought it might be another woman. He was showering me with attention one day and dropped me like a hot potato the next.”

“I can’t say I ever saw any evidence of it, I did run into him in a bar. Women were coming on to him, but he wasn’t with a particular one.”

Angelina frowned, a hint of jealousy wiggling its way into her brain. “I’m sure he had his reasons.” She just wished they didn’t hurt so much, whatever they were.

“There you are!” Aliyah’s voice sounded behind them as she and Tyler came hurrying down the hall with a big colorful balloon bouquet.

“Where did you find that in the middle of the night?” Ky asked, amused, enjoying watching his big bull of a brother wrestling a dozen balloons through the small door.

“Oh, I had them at home and Tyler blew them up for me,” Aliyah answered happily, coming to kiss her future brother-in-law on the cheek.

“I always knew he had a lot of hot a
ir,” Ky teased, glad of a little diversion from his concern for Cooper. “Drew took her back, he said he’d come get me in a minute.”

“Hey, Angelina,” Aliyah hugged her. “I’m so glad you’re here.”

“Drew was happy to help.” Knowing how much Drew valued the friendship of the Landon family, Angelina was glad to see fences being mended.

“Nervous?” Ty asked his brother as they found a seat in the waiting room.

  “Petrified,” was his answer.

In the next few minutes, excitement reigned. A nurse came for Kyler and he adjourned to the delivery room, leaving Angelina with Ty and Aliyah. Soon, the cry of a baby could be heard. They gathered at the delivery room door waiting for word and in a few moments Ky joined them. Kyler’s arms were full and his face was permanently creased into a smile. “It’s a girl!”

Aliyah and Angelina crowded around, oohing and ahhing over the red-faced baby with powerful lungs and little fists beating in the air.

“What’s her name?” Tyler asked, leaning in to gaze at his new niece.

“We’re going to name her Kennedy Rose Landon and call her Kenzie for short,” Ky announced proudly.

“When can we see Cooper?” Angelina asked.

“Drew will come get us,” Kyler said. “Do you want to hold her?” He offered her his child and Angelina accepted, cradling the baby close. An unfamiliar tugging grasped at her heartstrings and all she could think about was a baby boy of her own with Drew’s sky blue eyes.

“She’s ready for you,” Drew announced, looking tired but pleased with himself. “Just for a few minutes, she needs her rest.”

As they filed into the small room, Angelina hung back with Drew and he pulled her close as they watched the couple fall in love with their beautiful daughter.

  * * *

“I am so proud of you,” Angelina told Drew as she watched him undress. She was already in the bed, gathering her courage for what she was about to do.

“Why, thank you. Bringing a new life in the world is always the best.” He felt amazing. Not only did he get to deliver a healthy baby, he was on good terms with his best friends once more.

“What you do must be incredible. Every day you help someone. You get to see the results of your work. How do you ever sleep?” She hugged herself. “I still have goose bumps and I was just barely an observer.”

“What you do is equally important. Your work with the government saved countless lives and if you find a cure for GSS, you’ll go down in the annals of scientific history.”

“I can’t explain it any better, but it’s not the same.” She went up on her knees in the bed, throwing her covers back so he could see her better. During her lunch break yesterday, she’d gone shopping. “I know this isn’t red, I thought you might like it anyway.”

Drew’s jaw dropped. His voluptuous goddess was lovingly encased in pure, white lace baby doll pajamas. She looked like a delectable confection. “Fuck me,” he whispered reverently.

“As a reward for a job well done, I’d love to give you your surprise.”

Adjusting his cock in his now too-tight boxer briefs, Drew swallowed – hard. “I want anything you want to give me.”

Throwing the covers even farther back, Angelina made room for him. “Join me, please.”

Drew literally leapt across the room, jumping into the bed and bouncing on the mattress. “Two’s a party. I don’t have be asked twice.”

Soon, they both were laughing. When he was flat of his back, Angelina made herself happy, running her palms over his chest, swirling her fingers through the fur on his chest. “I’m going to have a good time playing with you.” Touching and kissing his body, she let her lips play on his skin.

Drew feasted on her beauty with his eyes. There was no way he could miss her joy, the concentration on her face was adorable, she was truly taking pleasure in his body. Never before had he been so excited, every muscle was tense, and chill bumps were rising on his body. “You have me where you want me, now what are you going to do with me?”

With a graceful move, she straddled him, placing a palm on either side of his face. In this position, her breasts were right in his face, two lush mounds of sweet, feminine flesh. Angelina gave him a courtesan’s smile, the look in her eyes telling him that she knew exactly the effect she was having on him – and she liked it. “I’ve been missing out. I know what you feel like deep inside of me, but I haven’t had the chance to…kiss you.”

Drew forgot how to breathe as she moved down his body, lingering on the speed bump of his cock as her pussy slid across the hard ridge. “I better not be asleep and dreaming.” When her fingers came into contact with his flesh, he let out the breath he’d been holding with a long, low hiss. “Lord, Almighty,” he groaned as his cock jerked against her small, soft palm.

“Now, you know what I was reading on my kindle earlier, blow-job instructions,” Angelina murmured as she stroked him, enchanted. “It feels like velvet over steel.” Bending her head, she used just the tip of her tongue to trace the entire length of him. Drew’s whole body bucked and Angelina tilted her head up, meeting his gaze. “Should I stop?”

“Oh, merciful heavens, no. God no.”

Wrapping her fingers around his thick stalk, she moved her hand lazily up and down, running her thumb over the weeping tip. “Did you know that Cleopatra once did this to a hundred men during a single orgy?” When Drew didn’t answer fast enough, she went on. “And did you know that when we say French kissing, this is really what the French were referring to?”

“No, can’t say I did,” he muttered between pants.

To illustrate her point, Angelina leaned in and lapped at him with her tongue, then slowly – ever so slowly, slid her lips over the swollen, throbbing head. Drew bowed his back, thrashed his head on the pillow, and almost levitated off the bed.

Bracing herself over him, Angelina committed herself to his pleasure. She was a quick study and the instructional manual she’d consulted was adequate. Sucking on the tip of his dick seemed to bring the desired results, he was lifting his hips, moaning her name, and she felt his pleasure being echoed between her thighs. Using her tongue, she tickled and licked, sucking hard enough to make him groan. Holding him in place with her hand, she rubbed and squeezed the base. Just like the book said, it seemed to drive him crazy. When she took more of him into her mouth, Drew grasped her hair and held her in place. He should’ve known she had no intention of leaving him until the deed was done.

Drew found himself at the gates of heaven. Helplessly, his hips bucked as his desire raged. Clawing at the sheets, his knuckles grew white as he grasped the thin cotton. “Angelina, baby!” He tried to pull out before he spilled into her mouth, but Angelina would have none of it. She held him, soothing him with her tongue until he was spent. Only then did she let him go to pepper kisses over his abs and thighs, anywhere she could reach.

“Come here.” He pulled her close enough to kiss her lips. “That was some surprise.” Drew kissed her again. “The best surprise I’ve ever received.”

“Good. I told you I’m a quick study. I love to learn new things.”

Nuzzling her neck, he whispered, “Come sit on my face and I’ll return the favor.”

Angelina rubbed his cheek and kissed his chest. His eyelids were drooping and he was very nearly asleep. “Later, we have the rest of our lives.” She stared at him, so relieved she could make him happy. “I love you, Drew Haley. I love you so much.”

He smiled, looking right at her and Angelina held her breath.

This was it, the moment she’d waited forever for.

But he said nothing, he just closed his eyes and drifted off to sleep.

  * * *

The next morning dawned bright and clear. All the rain had moved out of the area and the forecast was for sunny days ahead. Angelina rolled over and checked the clock, her face resting on Drew’s pillow. A smile played on her face as she remembered the night they’d spent together. During the night, he
d awoken her with soft kisses on her neck and they’d made love. Slowly. Softly. A true joining of hearts and minds as well as bodies. Just remembering how he’d spooned her from the back, filling her, his hands soothing over her body made Angelina hot. The only thing that could’ve made it better would have been him turning to her and saying the same words she’d whispered only hours before.

“Drew?” she called to him, thinking he might be in the bathroom.

Not hearing an answer, she left the bed and grabbed her robe. When she found the restroom empty, she hurried on to his office, only to find it empty as well. Slipping down the stairs, she padded around until she heard his voice. At first, she thought he was speaking to Hattie – but that was not the case.

“Susan, I don’t think I can take much more of this. Since the first time we talked eight months ago, my life has been a mess. I can’t sleep. I can’t think. How am I supposed to go on?”

Angelina froze in her tracks, her hand going up around her throat.

“No, I can’t come see you. Angelina is here and I’m trying to be happy. I need for you to stop calling every time something happens. I’m doing the best I can to forget all of this so I can function.”

Unable to believe what she was hearing, Angelina sank back against the wall, grateful for its stability to hold her up. All her doubts come rushing back.

“I’ll be in contact with you the moment I have anything to offer. You know how important this is to me. I have never been able to walk away from a problem and I’d give everything I own to be able to tell you that this nightmare is over.”

When Drew ended the call, Angelina raced back up the stairs. She didn’t understand everything she heard, but one thing was clear. Drew was involved in some type of serious relationship with a woman named Susan and he was anxious to rid himself of some type of responsibility.

She just hoped to God the responsibility he wanted to rid himself of – wasn’t her.

Angelina was afraid to assume anything, but she couldn’t deny that Drew was hiding something from her, something important enough to make him miserable. In her heart, she knew this had something to do with the way he’d acted all those months ago.
