Let There Be Dragons (The Children of Ankh Book 3)

That sounded heavenly. She practically bounced out of bed. Maybe, the girl she used to be wasn’t completely lost? As the urge hit her, she paused and said, “I’ll be right there. I need to go to the washroom. Order me one of those slushy drinks, pretty please.”
He grinned at her as he answered, “Sure thing beautiful. See you in a few.”
Kayn strolled into the bathroom. She sat on the throne of porcelain and her stomach complained again. Either it was a warning or she was starving. It was probably the latter. Only a few minutes of time had lapsed as Kayn wandered out into the courtyard to eerie silence. Everyone appeared to be fine but frozen in place. It was as though someone had hit pause on the remote control of their lives. Instinct told her this wasn’t dangerous. Someone was still able to move behind the bar. She heard the humming of a blender. Kayn cautiously made her way to the bar. What in the hell was this? Curious, she slipped into the empty seat. The bartender from the night before placed an impressive looking colorful slushy drink in front of her.
The friendly bartender said, “Drink that bad boy.”
It wasn’t the bartender’s voice but she recognized it. His voice matched that black spandex wearing jokester from the in-between. What was this creepy tool doing here? He was from the in-between. Kayn humored the being that high jacked the bartender’s body as she took a sip of his brightly colored concoction.
He casually leaned over the counter and queried, “It’s the best drink you’ve ever had, isn’t it?”
She met his eyes as she replied, “Yes, it is. Why don’t you just get to the point of this visit and unfreeze my friends.”
The being shape shifted into a blonde adonis. He extended a hand in greeting and said, “My name’s Seth. I’m one of the three Guardians but you can call me dad.”
What did he just say?
“It’s shocking, I know. We always suspected you were mine but we didn’t know for sure until you sent twenty demons back through the hall of souls with that orb of light. That caused one hell of a shit show. For future reference the demons have to be pre-approved as redeemable before you’re allowed to do that.”
“You’re my father? What does that mean?” Kayn questioned while trying to wrap her mind around the surprise paternity announcement.
He grinned at her and sighed, “I was hoping someone would have had this conversation with you already but when a boy and girl really like each other…”
Kayn interrupted the immortal’s sarcastic shenanigans by raising one hand and saying, “I think I’ve got that part of it. I’m talking about in the future.”
Seth grinned at her as he exclaimed, “Your sister just woke up.”
Sister? What sister?
Lexy was on the war path, marching towards them.
Lexy was her sister? What?
The fiery crimson-haired Dragon hissed, “Who in the hell is this asshole and why isn’t anyone moving?”
Seth grinned as he motioned like he wanted to shake Lexy’s hand. She scowled at him and didn’t move a muscle so he began to explain, “Let’s catch you up. I’m your father and Kayn here is your sister. Everyone will start moving again as soon as we get back. I’ll make sure to return you both to the second you left. Your friends won’t even know you were gone.”
Her surprise sibling was visibly confused. Lexy glanced at Kayn and then back to Seth as she questioned, “Why would we go anywhere with you?”
With an enormous grin plastered on his face, he responded, “Did I forget to tell you who I am? My name’s Seth. I’m one of the three Guardians. Coming with me isn’t exactly a choice.”
The Dragon sisters glanced at each other as the scenery flashed and they disappeared. They reappeared in the jungle standing outside of what appeared to be an Ankh crypt. The Guardian Seth walked right through the wall and they stood there. Were they supposed to walk through it too? Lexy strolled over and tapped the surface of the crypt. It was solid rock. Kayn heard his voice in her head, “What are you two girls waiting for? An invitation?” Lexy had obviously heard the same thing. She walked right at the wall and vanished into the stone. Kayn took a deep breath and followed her, appearing on the other side completely unscathed. She’d walked through stone before but it had always been on the inside of a crypt. The two Dragons of Ankh began to follow Seth down a long flight of stairs that descended into darkness. He reached the bottom before them and spoke in a language Kayn recognized. She even knew what the words meant, let there be light. The stone chamber lit up. The walls were covered with the kind of carvings you’d see in any Ankh crypt. There were three handprints on the wall. What was this about?
The Guardian smiled, pointed at the handprints on the wall and ordered, “Kneel and place your hands on those prints.”
He was a Guardian. This wasn’t a choice. Kayn and Lexy obediently knelt before the carvings on the wall, glanced at each other and simultaneously placed their hands on the ancient handprints. For a second nothing happened. Kayn tried to pull her hands away but they wouldn’t budge. She looked to the other side of her. Seth was kneeling there with his hands placed in the third pair of prints. Kayn felt her palms begin to heat up and then they began to burn. She wasn’t concerned. She’d fed from the walls in the Testing. A burst of pure energy travelled up her arms. The skin on her arms began to glow with shimmering golden light. This was new. Seth removed his hands from the wall and they could let go. Kayn looked at her hands. Her skin was no longer glowing but she knew she was different. He’d done something to her. She felt stronger.
Seth placed his hands on the top of both of their heads and announced, “You have both just been granted your birthright. As the daughters of a Guardian you will bow for no one but the leader of your clan and the Guardians. Your abilities have been unlocked. They should be easier to control and you will be much stronger now.” He removed his hands, took a step back and said, “Get off your knees.”
Kayn rose to stand beside her fellow Dragon and as fate would have it, immortal sibling. The two girls looked at each other and in an instant, they were back in front of the bar he’d taken them from. Everyone was joking around and it was as though nothing had happened. The two Dragons embraced.
Kayn whispered in Lexy’s ear, “I definitely didn’t see that one coming.”
An utterly astonished Lexy pulled away from her and whispered, “We’re sisters. Should we tell everyone?”
Kayn replied in her normal tone, “You start. I’ll be right there. I just need a second.”
Frost called to her, “Hey beautiful! Hurry up, your drink’s melting over here! It’s a hot one today!”
Kayn smiled, knowing that Pina Colada had probably been on the counter in the blazing afternoon sun for a quite a while. She heard the thunderous swooshing of the ocean and her eyes traveled there. She was part Guardian. She had a sister and a father. Kayn winced. The immortal that drove her insane was her father. This meant she was Azariah’s niece.
Jenna’s voice boomed, “I knew it!”
All eyes were on her as she turned around to face the group. Kayn strolled towards the bar in true Dragon form, took the drink from in front of her stupefied boyfriend and affirmed what Lexy had told them, “We’re sisters and the Guardian Seth is our father. Let’s order lunch.” The strange plot twists in her life never ceased to amaze her. Frost gazed into her eyes and smiled. She had a feeling that the next chapter in the story of her life was going to be an exciting one. Bring it on…
