I paddle over to him and give him a high five and then we exchange shakas, or hang loose signs with our thumbs and little fingers.
We both turn around seeing a little wave coming our way, and push off each other before paddling furiously to get it.
Boys will always be boys.
“Lunchtime!” I hear my woman yell, just as I stand up and ride my wave to shore.
I look back over my shoulder and see Eric right there behind me, trying to creep up on me.
The wave is small so this is pretty funny and nothing dangerous is going to happen.
Our oldest boys are already out of the water and running toward our picnic tables underneath the shade of some trees.
We’ll be on their heels in seconds.
As I ride the wave in the last little bit I just let my head move all around. I take in all this beauty of where we are, where we live, and where we get to enjoy every day.
We. That’s the most important word. We.
My eyes focus forward as all our kids start waving to Eric and I.
We.
Without our families this paradise would mean nothing. The sad thing is we wouldn’t even know. We’d think we had it all figured out just out here surfing, making money, and enjoying the sun.
That’s the single guy fallacy. He thinks he’s got it all, and in a lot of ways it seems like it, until he finds the one. It’s only then he can realize he really didn’t have anything.
All the money, fame, sport, all that stuff pales to waking up every morning to a home full of little feet pitter-pattering across the floor…tiny bodies jumping onto the bed…and family breakfasts at the table.
That’s what life’s all about.
And it all starts and ends with her. She’s the mother to our five children, and hopefully five, or maybe even seven, more.
I thought I couldn’t love her more than when I put that ring on her finger.
Then I thought the same the day we got married.
And again when we had our first child, and our second, and our third, and so on.
But every day somehow tops the last.
I’ve heard some of those Wall Street types say that compound interest is the eighth wonder of the world.
They’re absolutely right, but not in the way they think.
They’re chasing another dollar, but for what?
The way compound interest works when you’re in love with the only woman who’s for you, and you’ve made a family with her, is that love just grows a little more each and every day. Naturally.
You don’t even think about it. It’s just like a fan running in the background on a hot summer day. It’s just there, doing its thing.
And that’s pretty much our family in a nutshell. We’re just doing our thing.
Enjoying our little slice of fun in the sun each and every day, forever.
I feel my body snap in the midsection and I lose my balance, falling forward in the shallow water.
I quickly come up and see my brother-in-law surf past me.
“Got ya!” he says.
I can only laugh.
Yeah, he got me this time all right.
But it’s only because I was off daydreaming again about this wonderful life I have with her, with us.
And the best part is it isn’t a dream. It’s real, even though I have to pinch myself every day.
I’m obsessed with my family and they’re obsessed with me.
And it’s not a good thing…it’s the best.
