I felt him smile against my mouth. He slid his hands under my bottom and lifted against the backs of my thighs. I took his cue and hopped up, wrapping my legs around his waist. We eventually made it to the hallway leading to the bedroom. He stopped halfway and leaned me back against the wall. I drew in a breath as he kissed my neck and then slowly dragged his lips to the top button of my shirt. He stopped then straightened up and looked down at me with a mischievous smile. After what seemed like an eternity, he unfastened the top button in tortuous slow motion. Then, he returned his mouth to where he left off and dragged his lips to the next button.

A knock sounded on the front door.

He stopped kissing my buttons and looked at me with raised eyebrows.

I shrugged. “I didn’t tell anyone I was here, I swear,” I whispered. A scowl took over his face.

“I’m gonna pretend I didn’t hear it,” he said. “Now, remind me what was I just doing?”

I leaned in to nuzzle next to his ear before I whispered the answer.

The knocking came again, this time closer to pounding.

Alex tipped his head back and sighed at the ceiling. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” He held me as I slid my legs to the floor then he gave me a desperate kiss. “I’ll be right back. Please don’t move.” He stomped toward the front door. I clasped my shirt closed then stood and listened.

As soon as I heard the visitor’s voice, a cold panic flooded my insides and rose to the base of my throat. I froze in a moment of indecision, then rushed into the living room just in time to hear Alex say, “I’m her boyfriend. Who the hell are you?”

  “I’m her husband.”

  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I wish to express my most heartfelt gratitude to all of those who helped in the creation of this book. Thank you, Rich Hansen from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area. Thank you to Trooper Roy Carlson of the Utah Highway Patrol for sharing his expertise and experience. Any errors in his job description are entirely due to my imagination and are my own. To Kandice and JD for doing the heavy lifting while I typed and then hit the delete key over and over again. To my family who put up with the “have to work on my book” excuse. To Lesli and Samwise who turned my wooden puppet into a “real book,” to Lysa and Leslie for your keen eyes. To URWA chapter mates, who listened and chatted and hashed things out, who made suggestions, and spread the word.

To James who made all of this possible.

To Grandma Lola, who sat and read books with me only until I wanted to stop (which was never), even though she had so many other things to do.
