“I—I don’t understand,” Patrick said.
“It’s part of the curse of Bonefeather Temple,” Aziz said. “They may never leave. Only I and these three,” he gestured to the three regular people, “my friends from the village, know about it.” He stepped up to the last ninja who had yet to remove the mask and said, “Your turn.”
The ninja stared at him defiantly, then lunged for the lever and pulled it. A groan sounded and the door slid open. With a grand gesture, the ninja spun and removed the mask to reveal that she was Captain Selna.
Somehow she’d infiltrated the group. At the open door behind her, the pirates appeared and charged down the stairs, weapons drawn and battle cries echoing through the temple.
Chapter 15: Trish
Trish knew this was the time to act. No running in any direction but forward. She drew her diamond sword and advanced along with her friends and the zombie-pigman ninjas.
The pirates fought much better than the monsters had, reminding Trish that she’d only been using a sword for a very short amount of time. She managed to bring her sword up and block a downward strike from a pirate, but it sent vibrations through her arm and knocked her back.
She looked up in time to see the pirate advancing, a cocky grin on his ugly, bearded face. That cockiness could be used against him, she realized.
With a whimper she stepped back and pretended to be scared, watching carefully as the pirate pulled back his sword for the strike. She lunged, brought her knee into his groin, and then slammed the hilt of her against his temple to knock him unconscious. Unlike when she’d tried that maneuver on the zombie, she was glad to see the old knee-to-the-groin trick still worked on pirates.
In her moment of victory, she paused at the sight of Captain Selna racing up a back passage. Whatever she was after, Trish had to make sure she didn’t get it.
Dodging strikes as best she could, Trish gave chase. A kick meant for Veera knocked her to the ground. Veera shouted that she appreciated the diversion as she leaped over Trish and continued the defense.
Trish crawled now, realizing that down here it was a lot easier to dodge sword strikes. No one even noticed her! She made it to the passage, checked behind her, and saw Patrick looking her way.
“I’ll be right behind you,” Patrick said.
She turned to go, then heard an “oomph” from Patrick as three pirates tackled him at once.
Leaving him here to die was the last thing she wanted to do. With determination she turned back, ready to fight, but Sharp bit into one of the pirate’s forearms and Patrick was able to kick a second off, then turn and struggle with the third.
“Get going!” he yelled at Trish. “Stop her!”
Sharp barked loudly too, and it almost sounded like he said, “Go!”
So she turned and gave chase, searching for Captain Selna. It only hit her a few minutes later that she was chasing one of the world’s most feared pirates, all by herself. This was one of Captain Blackheart’s right-hand people, and here she was, little Trish from a village in the middle of nowhere. How could she possibly hope to have a chance?”
No, she told herself. That way of thinking led to defeat, and today she meant to win. She was going to stop this pirate lady, and nothing before this moment mattered.
At the top of the stairs, the passage gave way to a room that glittered brightly. Trish’s eyes took a moment to adjust. The blurriness was soon replaced with glittering gold, light reflecting from the redstone torches that lined the ceiling in a circle so that the light reflected everywhere.
At the top of two arching stairways, a sword rested on a raised platform. Captain Selna stood in front of the sword, her lips turned up in a wicked grin. She reached for the weapon.
Captain Selna looked up and spotted Trish. Then she snatched the sword off the platform and laughed.
“You don’t have any idea what this is, do you?” Selna asked. “Don’t you know anything about Bonefeather Temple or why it was valued so? For this blade.”
She held the sword high, then brought it down to strike the pedestal—a wall of flame sprang from the place where the sword had struck. Flames burned hot, then died out, leaving Selna to laugh.
“The most powerfully fire-enchanted sword ever made,” she said. “Only one person could have crafted it, and he died long ago. Meaning, I now hold the most powerful weapon ever, and it has no equal.”
“Who talks like that?” Trish said, then adjusted her voice to mocking, “It has no equal. Pshh, you sound like an idiot.”
Confusion took over Selna’s expression, but then her face grew red. She jumped over the pedestal and landed in a crouch with the sword out to her side. When she stood, her expression was pure hatred.
“Nobody…” she took a step forward, “…calls me…” she raised the sword, ready to strike, “an idiot!”
Selna brought the sword down hard, and Trish just barely dodged the strike—but fire burst forth, nearly singeing her hair. Maybe angering this pirate lady hadn’t been the best move, but it was too late now.
Again Selna struck, and this time a wall full of books caught fire.
Trish ran up the stairs and to the pedestal, searching for a way to defeat Selna. But she looked back and saw Selna walking up the stairs, the fire behind her reflecting off of the gold in a beautiful and terrifying way. Trish’s courage fled, and so she decided she should too. She ran, using the pedestal as a springboard, and jumped, reaching a ledge just underneath the torches. She grabbed the ledge above her and pulled herself up, before snatching one of the redstone torches and throwing it at Selna below.
Selna shouted swear words at Trish as she batted aside one redstone torch after another, but when Trish pulled the fifth redstone torch, she heard a loud click. Thinking it odd, she put the torch back and was surprised to see a small window appear beside her—an opening, leading out of the temple! She ducked through it and heard the thud of Selna landing on the ledge behind her as she retreated.
Trish came out onto the sloped side of the temple. Terrified she’d fall at any moment, she worked her way around to the other side. She took each step with care, very much aware of the sound of Selna climbing out onto the ledge. A stairwell led up here, on the outside of the temple, and she followed it until it stopped at the very top. From up here, she could see all who had fallen in the battle between the ninjas, monsters, and pirates. They looked so small, so far away.
Trish was panting, trying to catch her breath. What had she been thinking in the first place, running after Selna?
Speak of the devil. Right behind her, Selna jumped up, grabbed hold of Trish’s armor, and pulled her back down the steps. Trish twisted, breaking free, and ran for the edge of the temple. A jump from this high would surely kill her, she realized. Desperately, she searched for other escape routes, but she found none.
“What, you thought you’d take on one of the greatest pirates of all time, alone?” Selna laughed.
Trish froze, the fear finally settling in. But she embraced it, faced it head on. Something moved behind Selna.
“Thing is,” a voice said. “She’s not alone.”
Patrick stepped into view, the gold sword held out at Selna, who scoffed. But then more forms appeared—first Sharp, and then Veera. Finally, Aziz.
“What’s this?” Selna said, for the first time, her voice showing worry. “You’re supposed to be downstairs fighting my pirates.”
“Yeah, we kinda beat them already,” Aziz said with a laugh. “My ninjas are tying them up as we speak. You’re next.”
“Ah, but I have this,” Selna said and held the sword up high. “And if you step any closer…” She darted forward, knocked Trish’s sword out of her hands so that it flew over the side and clattered to the ground far below, and held the enchanted sword to Trish’s neck.
Trish gulped, eyes darting as she looked for a way out. None of them could reach her before the blade, and the fact that it was enchanted with fire didn’t help. She was shaking, terrified.<

But then she remembered an important lesson. Being afraid, Patrick had told her back at the ship graveyard, led to failure, if you let it win. She had laughed at it then, but now she understood. It was about conquering your fears, standing up to them and fighting them head on. She could do that.
With only the slightest hesitation, enough to smile at Patrick, she pulled back her head and punched Selna’s arm. The blade went flying, skidding across the roof until it came to a stop near Aziz’s foot.
Trish wasn’t done—she ducked as Selna retaliated with a punch, and stood abruptly so that her head whacked Selna in the chin like an uppercut. Next, she kicked the pirate in the shin.
Selna shouted and pulled two swords from her back, but Trish was already charging, as was Patrick. The two connected with Selna before she even had a chance to lower the swords, shoulders plowing into her and sending her reeling back. She stood at the edge of the temple, windmilling to hold her balance.
“Drop the swords,” Trish said, hand outstretched. “I can save you.”
“Never!” Selna said and tried to swipe at Trish.
The sword missed, but the momentum caused Selna to lose her balance. Her eyes went wide with fright, and a flash of terror crossed her face before she fell backward off of the temple and out of sight.
Patrick stared in shock for a moment, then took Trish in his arms, hugging her tight. He pulled her back as the others ran up to join them. “Are you okay?”
She thought about that. After all she’d been through, she was a bit shook up. But she’d had one heck of an adventure.
“Yeah,” she said. “I’m just glad it’s over.”
Aziz cleared his throat. “But you realize…it’s not.”
“What?”
“The Blade of the Sea, we found it, him,” he glanced at Patrick and smiled. “But that doesn’t mean Captain Blackheart is done with this. They still want to find the treasure that the Blade of the Sea protects. They still want to take over the world.”
“But what treasure?” Trish asked, looking between her friends with confusion. “Where?”
“The Fortress of Kunesh,” Aziz said. “It’s the gateway to the land of unlimited creativity. I never actually found it. But if they’re looking so hard, they must have found the missing piece needed to bring this all together.” He smiled at Trish, Patrick, and Veera, and then handed the enchanted sword to Trish. “I want you to have it, you earned it. And you’ll need a powerful weapon, if you’re going to be fighting alongside me.”
“Am I hearing this right?” she asked. “You’re coming with?”
“How else am I going to make sure we steal this item, whatever it might be, from Captain Blackheart? How else am I going to make sure we save the world?”
Everyone smiled. They all looked exhausted, but Trish could tell they were just as excited as she was to finish the job and save the world.
