Forty thousand women will die from breast cancer this year.

According to the National Cancer Institute, “When breast cancer is detected early, in the localized stage, the five year survival rate is 98%.”

Early detection is key to stopping the cancer’s spread.

  • Schedule monthly breast self-exams. An easy way to remember to do your exam is do it every month on your day of birth. For example, if you were born on June 16, conduct a thorough self-examination on the sixteenth day of every month.

  • Get a yearly mammogram if you are forty years old or older.

  • Get a clinical breast exam by a health-care professional yearly if you are forty or older, and at least once every three years if you are in your twenties and thirties.

For more information about early detection, see the American Cancer Society’s website at Cancer.org, and to connect with other breast cancer survivors online or for support, check out Pink-Link.org.
