Adele Silver’s face was red, and she was stamping her foot as she pointed at Grandma Grant.

Joe walked in between the two old women. “Everybody needs to calm down,” he said.

Joe was calm and collected and had the full force of the law behind him. Unfortunately, that meant nothing to Adele Silver or Grandma Grant. They completely ignored him and continue to shout.

“You did it on purpose!” Adele screeched.

I had a feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach. What had Grandma Grant done now? I didn’t immediately assume it was Grandma Grant’s fault because I was disloyal. It was because I knew her. She was always up to something.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Grandma Grant said, folding her arms across her chest. But from the way her eyes were dancing with glee, I knew she wasn’t telling us the full story.

“She told everyone I wouldn’t be able to make the first committee meeting,” Adele exclaimed. “And then she changed the time of the meeting and didn’t tell me.”

“Did you do that?” Joe asked.

“Maybe,” Grandma Grant said. “And if I did, it’s not against the law.”

Jess groaned and rushed over. She linked her arm through Grandma Grant’s and tried to drag her away. “It might not be against the law, but it’s not a very nice thing to do. Sorry, Adele. I’m sure Grandma Grant will tell you in good time for the next committee meeting.”

She tried to lead Grandma Grant back to the house, but Grandma Grant muttered loudly, “Don’t bet on it.”

  That set Adele off again.

“Did you hear that? That woman is unbelievable. She won’t be content until she has everything her own way.”

“All right, Adele. Calm down. I’m sure no harm was meant. Why don’t I give you a ride home?” Joe shot me an apologetic look, and I shrugged as I followed Jess and Grandma Grant toward the house.

I waved as he drove off with Adele and then went inside. One thing was certain, my life was never boring. As eccentric and crazy as my family were, I couldn’t imagine my life without them. I smiled as I walked over to help Jess try to reason with Grandma Grant. Not that I expected us to succeed. We never had in the past.

I had a feeling this feud with Adele Silver would not end well.

I sank down into an armchair beside the fire, and to my surprise, Athena jumped on my lap.

I grinned happily and stroked her soft fur. “Well, it looks like you’ve forgiven me at last.”

As Athena purred in my lap and Grandma Grant muttered complaints about Adele, I smiled. Life was good.
