The Man of Gold

by M. A. R. Barker

As a personal note, I make no apologies for the languages of Tekumel. The world is not Earth, although the humans of Tekumel did come from Earth—in a time immensely far in the future and as irrelevant to modem English as the languages of the Neanderthals are to us. The world is as complete as I can make it, and its unfamiliarities must just be endured by the reader who is exposed to it for the first time. I can only hope that those with little interest in languages will bear with me. Many readers pay little attention to foreign names in a story in any case, I am told, and simply recognise characters and places by the “look” of the words. There is thus no reason to worry about “spellings” unless one has the “linguistic bug.” Ignore them in the interests of the narrative! One often finds that people who are not daunted in the least by computer languages, quantum physics, and calculus are terrified for foreign languages, while I, alas, am just the opposite. I feel the same awe and apprehension over the mysteries of addition and subtraction that many people suffer when confronted by Spanish or German—let alone Arabic, Urdu, or Chinese!
