  “Very true.”

  “Bathroom through there.”

She walked in and said, “This is huge. Do you even use that tub?”

He looked at the big free-standing tub that he’d been in once when his body was sore from moving into the house, after spending the day lifting and pushing furniture around. “Not often.”

She walked a few steps and opened a door at the back of his bathroom. “Sorry if I’m nosy but I’m just dying to see if your closet is as big as I expected it to be.”

When she burst out laughing, he suspected it was. “Does it meet your expectations?”

  “And then some,” she said.

They went back downstairs, and she put together their salad while he checked on the dinner. “It shouldn’t be much longer. Maybe fifteen minutes. The chicken is probably ready, but the vegetables are still firm since I’ve got the grill so low.”

“No problem. The salad is ready too.”

The two of them sat at his island and started to eat, the silence not even uncomfortable between them. And when they were done with that, he went to the deck and got the rest of their dinner, and brought it to the island where she’d set up plates and silverware.

“Funny how we work as a team without words, don’t you think?” he asked, knowing he’d never had that connection with another woman before.

“You went to get dinner, I put plates out. That’s just common sense and good manners,” she said grinning at him.

His smile wanted to drop, but he forced it in place. “Or we click.”

“I guess we’ll know if we click or not later.”

Now he was positive she was just yanking him along on her agenda tonight. “Is that a promise or a tease?”

  “Both,” she said.

“Then let’s eat fast because I’m not sure how long I can wait but don’t want this dinner that I slaved over all day to go to waste.”

“I’m not sure I’ve ever known of a man to pick food over sex.”

He laughed. “It was say that or pick you up and carry you to my room. Not sure if you would have appreciated that.”

  ***

She wanted to say she’d appreciate it just fine, but the truth was she’d never had a man do that to her before. She’d never been with one that she brought that much passion out of.

That she was doing it with Drake without even trying was interesting. And exciting.

“I’m not sure how I’d feel about it,” she’d said. “Might have to try that another night.”

“Okay, now I know you’re just trying to torture me.”

She hadn’t been but kind of liked that she seemed to have a little bit of power to do that. Rather than answer him, she just winked and filled her plate. “This is really good,” she said after she had a bite of the chicken.

“Thanks. Ryder likes to cook. He is always bragging about how meat tastes best when it’s marinated and cooked for hours. When I’m just cooking for myself I could care less, nor do I want to spend that much time doing it.”

“But you went out of your way for me?”

“It’s the third date. Maybe I hoped to win you over and into my bed. Guess I could have ordered pizza and would have been fine.”

“What you do doesn’t control my decisions. It’s more about who you are.”

“You’ll have to explain that,” he said, looking serious for some reason.

“Sorry. That probably came out completely wrong. I’d like to think you’d know enough of the type of person I am that what you have doesn’t make a difference to me. When I said it’s who you are, I mean your personality. How you treat me. How you treat others.”

“Oh,” he said, almost blowing a breath out.

“Let me guess. You’ve had women with you for what you’ve got and not who you are?”

“Yeah. We don’t need to talk about that,” he said. “It’s in the past. I know when a woman wants me for me.”

“Then why would you ask that?”

“Just double checking that my radar wasn’t completely off with you.”

She wasn’t sure how to take that. “It’s not.”

They finished dinner, she helped him clean up, and then he asked, “Are you going to make me wait until after dessert?”

She laughed. “Of course not. I figured that would be for after.”

“Thank God,” he said, grabbing her hand and pulling her toward the stairs and up to his room at almost a jog. At least she almost had to run to keep up with his long legs.

The minute they were in his room, his hands went to her face holding her in place while his mouth attacked hers. She was ready for it and a willing participant. She wasn’t sure how much longer she could wait herself.

Sure, it’d only been three dates, but it was spread out over almost four weeks at this point since they even talked about doing this. About giving dating a try. She saw him almost daily at work; they weren’t strangers by any means.

Then why was she trying to justify this to herself? Because she didn’t sleep with a lot of men and when she did, she had to be sure it was more than just being out for a good time.

She was sure with Drake. Wasn’t he the one putting all the rules up there about the future? More than her?

Yeah, it was definitely not just about having fun for him.

Her hands went under his shirt and pulled it over his head. She was always checking his biceps out but never expected he’d be as toned as he was. Holy cow, this wasn’t someone that sat at a desk for a living at all.

“You work out more than I thought you did,” she said.

“Got to keep the ladies happy,” he said back, returning the favor and pulling her shirt over her head. Then going for her bra. “I have to keep us on an even playing field. And wow, you’re in pretty fine shape too.”

“Yoga,” she said back. “It’s the only thing I’ve got room for in my place.”

“And it looks pretty fine on you.”

“The same for you. No more talking.” Her hands went to the button of his shorts and released them along with the zipper, sending them to his feet. He did the same to her.

They both removed the rest of their clothing fast, and stood there naked, her eying his steel-hard cock standing proud and tall and thoughts of size thirteen shoes popped back into her head. Oh man, she was in for a treat tonight.

They reached for each other at the same time, stumbling onto the bed, him on top of her, her rolling over and getting on top of him.

“Wow. I didn’t expect this of you,” he said.

“What? That I might like sex?”

“I’m thrilled you do. More than thrilled. Damn, you are going to make it hard for me to go slow.”

“Who said anything about slow? I haven’t had sex in well over a year.” She moved her hands up and down his chest, just feather-like caresses. “We can go slow later. After dessert maybe. Right now though, I’ve got other plans.”

“What plans are those?” he asked, his eyes on hers now. They were a deep dark shade of brown. A heat was behind them that she was pretty sure was mirroring her own.

“Having you inside of me. Please tell me you have condoms in here? Otherwise I’ve got to stand up and walk back to my shorts.”

“You brought condoms with you?” he asked as he reached over to the bedside table and opened a drawer, grabbing one at random.

She pulled it out of his hand. “I wasn’t taking a chance and I’m always protected.”

  “Same here.”

Her hands were moving fast and had him covered, then she lifted up and lowered herself right down on him. The length and width of him had her stretching to the point that it was almost painful, but so pleasurable at the same time.

“Jesus you’re tight,” he said, sounding almost like he was in pain.

“I told you it’s been a while,” she said back, now filled completely. Her body was just yielding so easily to his.

His hands came up and cupped her breasts. “I like how muc
h you’ve got here.”

“It’s not a lot. Average,” she said.

“Perfect,” he said back, pinching her nipples and causing her inner muscles to clench. “Damn it,” he said. “Stop that.”

  “You felt that?” she asked.

  “Of course I did.”

“Sorry. I can’t help it. It all just feels too darn good.”

The more he pinched her nipples, flicking his thumbs over the hardened peaks, the more she clenched. Yeah, she was going to have to start to ride him and ride him hard.

“Do what feels good then,” he said.

  “You asked for it.”

She lifted up and slid back down and watched as his eyes almost rolled back in his head. Yep, she felt the same way and did it again.

The faster she moved the more his hands did. There was no way they were going to last long and she was thinking he felt the same way when he wrapped his hand around the back of her neck and yanked her down, crushing his mouth to hers.

She started to grind against him, moving up and down the best she could, his hips lifting up to join her, slapping together and retreating while his tongue slid in and out of her mouth to the same motion.

At this point she couldn’t do much more than let her body control everything. Match what he was doing.

Emotions and feelings were taking her over like an out of body experience and she was willing to hand it over to Drake. Gladly.

When she bit down on his tongue, his other hand moved around to her hip, held her in place and just slammed up into her again and again. Her muscles didn’t bother to clench, this time they just clamped down on him and held on, squeezing as hard as they could while everything in her just let go.

She heard a groan and wasn’t sure if it was his or hers and didn’t really care as his body stilled and she’d actually felt the throbbing of him inside of her.

And when he held her tenderly after that, she knew there was a tiny part of her that was lost forever to him.

  Same Wave Length

  “Is the coast clear?”

Drake turned his head to see his twin walking down the hall toward the kitchen. The front door had been locked, but everyone in his family had keys to each other’s places.

  “What?”

“I drove by last night and you had company.”

“Do you see a car in the driveway now?” he asked.

“Nope, but that doesn’t mean you didn’t have them put it in the garage. Notice I said them and not Kara.”

Drake sighed, knowing there was no way around this. No way he could lie, not that he would. “Kara was here last night. She’s not now.”

“Did she spend the night?” Noah asked.

“No.” Even though he wanted her to. She’d claimed she didn’t bring a change of clothes, but he knew she’d done that on purpose. Baby steps, he had to remind himself.

“So then I guess it didn’t turn out the way you wanted it to.”

“It did,” Drake said. “And that is between us. It was a nice date. A good time. But she went home afterward.”

“You’re not one to push a woman out the door for the night. That would be Sam and Ryder. Even Wyatt doesn’t do that.”

“I wanted her to stay. She didn’t bring clothes. I said it didn’t matter, but she wanted to get home to her cat.”

Noah laughed. “She has a cat. You hate cats.”

“This one is fine. It seems fine at least. It hasn’t scratched me yet like most do.”

“So what is going on with you two? How many dates has it been? I can see you’re annoyed. I guess you’re right, she does bring the worst out of you.”

“Want coffee?” Drake asked, getting up to make another cup for himself. If he and Noah were going to have a heart-to-heart he needed more caffeine since he spent most of the night staring at the ceiling wishing he could have convinced Kara to stay.

“Sure,” Noah said, making himself at home at the island.

“So, last night was our third date.” Drake stopped when Noah laughed. “It wasn’t planned that way. I mean we had that agreement to each pick a date and then the third we’d draw out of a hat.”

“And you wrote down dinner here?”

“She wrote down dinner at her place.”

“Interesting,” Noah said. “On the same wavelength.”

“I thought so. I still think so. Anyway, she came here, we had dinner.”

“And sex,” Noah said, laughing this time.

Drake slammed the coffee cup down in front of his brother. “It’s not like that.”

  “What’s it like?”

  “I don’t know.”

“You know something because you’re in a mood today. You’re never in a mood.”

“I don’t know why she wouldn’t stay the night.”

Was Kara just playing with him? He didn’t think so. He’d never thought that. He pursued her. They’d even had the talk about where the future was going to go. But again, he was the one who always brought it up, not her.

“What’s the big deal? Stay at her place next time.”

“I thought of that. I plan on it. Unless she kicks me out.”

  “Do you think she will?”

“I really have no idea. I can’t get that good of a read on her.”

“And you want to?” Noah asked.

  “Of course.”

  “Why?”

  “Because I like her.”

“You like her a lot,” Noah said. “I’m kind of jealous.”

Drake was done talking about this. “Why did you drive by last night?”

“I wanted a beer and some conversation. I ended things with Marie.”

“You said you were going to after the wedding. You never did tell me what you were fighting about there.”

“Can you believe she was pissed off that she felt I was just a normal person and then got a look at the family and thought I had too much? What the hell does that mean?”

“Beats the shit out of me,” Drake said. “What do you have that is so much? I’d say your house is about average. Nothing about you really stands out. You’re not even as good looking as me.”

“Ass,” Noah said. “She’s a minimalist. She said everything was just too much there. That people were starving in the world and Cade’s wedding had an open bar and more food than she’d ever seen that people didn’t even eat.”

“I thought she was into the environment and all.”

“She is. I get it. We do stuff with the kids in school on that front. I’m all for saving the environment. But I’m not going to be one of these people who uses two sheets of toilet paper to help save the world either.”

Drake spit the coffee he was sipping out of his mouth. “Please tell me you are joking.”

  “I wish I could.”

  “Dude, what the hell?”

“Do you think I knew that? I didn’t until we got into it again after the wedding. That night she was just throwing all sorts of comments in my face about wastefulness.”

“She knows what our father does for a living, right? She knew our family for the most part. People recognize the name and the beer.”

“She said she didn’t. She doesn’t drink either. Not that I drink a lot. None of us do, but she had no clue.”

“Does she live in a cave?”

“An eco friendly one,” Noah said, smirking.

“With one roll of toilet paper to last a month,” Drake said back.

“I won’t even tell you the other things. I wish she didn’t tell me.”

“So you broke up last night? Why wait so long since you were fighting after the wedding?”

It wasn’t like Noah to not tell him more of what was going on.

“I don’t know. For the most part she’s a nice person, but I saw another side to her. I just didn’t think it was the time to break up with her when she was throwing shit in my face. I needed to cool down. Unlike you, I get pissed off pretty fast at times.”

  “When you feel lik
e you’re being attacked,” Drake said.

“Exactly. So I dropped her off at home on Saturday night. We didn’t talk again until Tuesday. She wanted to go to lunch and acted like nothing even happened. I guess that was the last straw.”

“How could she say those things to you and then think you were going to be okay with it?”

“No clue,” Noah said. “Not only that, she insulted our family. That doesn’t fly with me. I told you, it just wasn’t there. No reason to drag it out.”

“None at all. So now you get to go stag to Ella’s wedding in September.”

“You’re going with Kara?” Noah asked.

“I’d like to say yes, but I don’t know. No one is supposed to know we are dating, but I told her one month. After that I’m telling the family.”

“What was her response to that?”

  “She agreed to it.”

“Then she isn’t that unreasonable,” Noah said. “If I were in her shoes I think I could relate.”

“Why?” Drake asked, not understanding that.

“She works for our family. Not you specifically but the family. First off, she probably doesn’t want anyone talking about her, and if they know she is dating the owner’s son, there will be talk. Second of all, if it doesn’t work out, then there will be even more talk. I get the feeling she likes to be left alone.”

“She does. She stays in her office and minds her own business.” He snorted. “She made a comment about what happens if our family doesn’t like her when they find out. I told her how much my family means to me and I can’t keep secrets like this for long.”

“I doubt anyone is going to dislike her. Why would she think that?”

“Who knows what goes through her mind half the time?” He wasn’t sure how much he should tell Noah about Kara’s background. If Noah knew more, maybe he’d understand. “She just didn’t have the same upbringing as us.”

  “Not many do.”

“I’m not just talking about money, but the closeness. She’s not close with her parents at all. She’s an only child and moved away from them. She has no family around.”

“That is a bit different than us. But that doesn’t mean anyone cares about it in our family. You know how everyone is, they tend to take someone in under their wing.”
