‘I’ll check it out,’ said Cally, thinking how wonderful it would be always to have someone as well-read as Nicolás as a sounding-board for her professional thoughts and problems.

When she mentioned this during dinner, he said, ‘That’s why I held off from marriage…because I could see that it had to be a partnership on a lot of levels, and until I met you I never had that kind of total rapport with anyone. Body, mind and soul is a complex match that I don’t think happens too often, but seems to have happened with us.’

‘Which is strange, considering how different our backgrounds are.’

‘Different superficially perhaps, but not when you get down to basics. Until now we’ve both been loners…not anti-social loners, but loners in the sense of having to rely on ourselves from an early age in a way that the children of happy families don’t.’

Later, as they went upstairs together, Cally was struck by how quickly it had come to seem natural to be spending the night with him.

It was hard, now, to believe that only a few days ago he had seemed as remote and inaccessible as the summits of the mountains they had crossed. Yet in a very short time they would have shed their clothes and be locked in a passionate embrace. And all it had taken to achieve that amazing change was the courage to risk a rebuff.

As soon as he had unlocked the door of their room, and closed it again behind them, Nicolás took her in his arms as impatiently as if it had been several days, not less than a couple of hours, since their last kiss.

Cally relaxed against him and closed her eyes, waiting for the delicious moment when their mouths would meet.
