“Seems to me, you are the only woman I ever want in my life, sweetcakes. I’d be honored if you would become my wife.”
“Thought you’d never ask,” Mattie whispered. “I just want to get a couple of things straight, though,” she smiled. “You know all those qualities you said I had when you thought I was a boy?”
He nodded, as his grin broadened.
“Now that you know I’m a girl, do you still think I have them?”
“Them and more than I expected,” he admitted, as his mouth covered hers.
She pulled away.
“Do you think I am just going to be a bother to you?” she asked pinning him with her stare.
“Sweetcakes, you have been a bother to me from the beginning, only it is the kind of bother that I crave!”
“Then, in that case, I accept, Matthew Douglas. I think I would enjoy becoming your wife.”
“You and me both, darlin’. You and me both.”
As he said the words, Mattie could swear it was Dusty’s voice she heard saying them and she knew Dusty was smiling down on the two of them.
