My thanks to the indisputably gifted Judy Olausen, who could have been doing emotionally easier and more profitable work in her studio but instead chose to join me in this cross-country adventure of the heart.

And above all, my gratitude to Gabe, who rescued me from the day he was born until he handed me off to others and went over the rainbow bridge.

JUDY OLAUSEN wishes to thank the following people for their lifelong friendship, help, and total support that went above and beyond, especially while working on the stories in their area:

Barb and Jim Quale for their help plus room and board on the Sheriff Joe Arpaio story.

Carol and David Fisher for their help securing the Randy Grim story. Randy, Carol, and David will single-handedly save St. Louis.

Judy Fesenmaier and Brian Williams, Shirajoy Abry and Art Christofferson, Kelly Hayes, the Fingermans, Ruth Godfrey, Brent Marmo, Tom Murtha, Betsy Sedio, Raleigh Wolpert, and Dr. Schuneman.

To my husband, Brian Sundstrom, for his kindness, grace, understanding, and patience. No one could ask for a more perfect life-mate.

Thank you to my amazingly talented, award-winning coauthor and collaborator, Karin Winegar, whom I have had the privilege of working with for many years. Our first assignment included dinner with the Prince and Princess of Wales, Charles and Diana. A very good start to years of working together. Now her passionate commitment to animal issues is an inspiration to me and all who meet her.

My little angel Tuffy, who died in my arms and was in my heart all during this book project.

  ABOUT THE COVER

CHLO ETHE GOLDENDOODLE (a cross of golden retriever and poodle) was purchased from a Wisconsin breeder by a family in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is now owned by Kimberly and Ron Carlson and their children, Spencer and Mackenzie, who live on a fourteen-acre hobby farm in Wayzata, Minnesota.

“The family had five children including two sets of twins who went to preschool with our kids,” Kimberly explains. “And when we moved to a hobby farm, we still had our kids in preschool together. They came in every day with their puppy and we oohed and ahhed at her. But when their puppy was seven months old, the mother called me and said, ‘That’s it! I am either destroying the dog or sending it to the humane society. She’s deaf, she won’t obey, she rolls in her poop every day, and I just can’t do it anymore.’”

The Carlsons already had two standard poodles, but Kimberly called Ron and asked, “Can we do one more dog?” He said, “Definitely,” and so the family brought Chloe to their home.

Chloe—now “CC” for Chloe Carlson—joined their two poodles, Coco and Chanel. “She peed and pooped and chewed everything—not furniture, fortunately—and she carries things in her mouth, and she piddles when you greet her at the door,” says Kimberly. “But she’s so endearing. And the best thing is that Ronnie has fallen in love with her.”

Chloe, with her black wells of eyes framed by two-inch-long eyelashes and her sweet, obliging personality, was never deaf, according to the Carlsons’ veterinarian. She just chose not to listen to her previous family. “When the family comes over to visit her, we tell the kids the poodles have made her better, and she can hear now,” says Kimberly.

And for her part, Chloe clings to her family. “She is so funny, so absolutely, endearingly wonderful,” says Kimberly. “The kids adore her so; she’s heartwarming and makes us laugh.”

The Carlson household includes six horses (four of them adopted from Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue—see page 59); four llamas named Versace, Pucci, Prada, and Calvin; and five cats (three of them rescued). “It’s a drop in the bucket, but somebody has to do it,” says Kimberly, who once diverted oncoming semitrucks on a highway to rescue a gray kitten. The cat, which they named Freeway, is devoted to her.

“I think the ones that are rescued know it,” says Kimberly. “We made a difference in theirs lives, and they are so appreciative of us.”
