Nodding, she said, “The old United States had the same issues. Remember those last few elections? How nasty and ugly they were? How polarized the citizenry became?”
“Yes, and look what happened then. Eventually, the economy suffered, and our resolve was weakened. I can’t help but think our separation as a people contributed to the collapse. It had drained the energy out of everyone, and there wasn’t enough determination left to fight through the downfall.
Terri’s expression said she agreed with her husband’s assessment. Her disturbed and depressed gaze shifted to Hunter. “What kind of future will he have?” she whispered.
“He’ll have everything within our power to give him,” Bishop answered with a melancholy tone. “But in the end, we can only prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Let’s drive out to the ranch. I need some solitude and security, and I think you do, too.”
