Daphne shook her head in fury. ‘Did you get anything from her first?’
‘I saw Corthie being handed over to a group of people, but the Quadrant won’t take me there.’
Her mother collapsed into a chair, her head bowed as everyone in the room fell silent.
‘Why not?’ said Lennox, a fresh bandage covering his chest.
‘It can only take me to places I’ve been;’ Karalyn said, ‘places I know. I have no idea how it works; I just ask it to take me somewhere, and then I’m there.’
‘Then my boy is lost?’ said Daphne, tears spilling down her cheeks.
‘We’ll get him back, mother,’ she said. ‘Somehow. I promise.’
Daphne closed her eyes for a moment, then stood and wiped her face. Karalyn could sense her mother’s torment, and the frustrated rage she was hiding beneath the calm exterior. Her mother nodded to everyone. ‘It’s time to leave.’
Karalyn walked over to where the others were gathered next to the pile of luggage, and raised an eyebrow at Carrie.
‘I’m coming too,’ she said. ‘It’s clear that wherever the Holdfasts go, chaos follows; and besides, I came for Lennox, and I’m not leaving without him.’
‘Everyone,’ said Daphne; ‘take a piece of luggage in one hand, then grab the person next to you with the other. Do not let go, understand me?’
Karalyn took up position by the head of the line. Next to her was Lennox, and they both looked away as their hands joined.
‘Do you remember where we’re going?’ said Daphne from the other end of the line, from where she was holding onto Jemma and Cole.
‘Aye, mother,’ Karalyn said. ‘Are we all ready?’
‘We are,’ said Daphne. ‘Proceed.’
Karalyn nodded.
Quadrant?
Yes, Karalyn.
Colsbury Castle. Go.
The tavern vanished from around them, replaced in an instant by a well-lit chamber, with rich tapestries on the walls and a thick carpet. Cole let out a shriek as they staggered and looked around.
A woman was sitting in an armchair close by, a book in one hand and a glass of white rum in the other. She glanced over her spectacles at them.
‘Holdfasts, armed Kellach, and a baby,’ said Shella, frowning. ‘Well, isn’t this just wonderful.’

Thank you for reading book seven of The Magelands Epic; just one more to go! Drafting Soulwitch reminded me a lot of Needs of the Empire – both are the third volume in a four-volume arc, and both took a very long time to write!
Soulwitch is also very important to me as it was the last book that my friend Graeme proofread before he died in early 2020. Graeme was involved in The Magelands from the very beginning, and would listen to me going on about the plots, world-building and character development while we shared a few glasses of whisky.
I’m glad he was there for so much of the series and I’ll miss his support and encouragement.
