Rasia stood and shook herself off. “You rotten bastard,” she sneered, her eyes on fire. “I am going to kill you dead.”

Now she rushed at him, but he simply swung on her and stopped her in her tracks. The impact of his arm knocked her thirty feet, and she crashed into the hard stone wall of the cave. A single candle fell to the floor, but it remained lit.

“I find myself wondering,” Lucien said as he began to pace before her, “who is going to kill who.”

Now a look of intense fear crossed Rasia’s face. He was strong, stronger than she ever would have imagined. She needed time to think, but she knew he would not afford her that.

“Rasia, I want to thank you,” Lucien continued. “Thank you for lying to me all my life. Thank you for imprisoning me in my own home and making me feel like a freak. Thank you, thank you.”

The two rushed toward each other now, and both took flight. They slammed together in mid-air, clawing and striking each other with fierce fury. It spun them around in circles as they fought.

But Rasia was tiring fast, and Lucien was just getting started. He picked her up from the ground and threw her here and there like a rag doll. She was bloodied and bruised, and she had ceased fighting back.

She knew this was her end.

Now she lay crumpled on the floor of the cave, her breathing heavy and ragged. Lucien straddled her and sat upon her beaten body. He took her by the hair and turned her face toward his. “Look at me, bitch!”

Rasia opened her eyes and smiled at her son. Even now she could smell him. She should have feasted on this animal long ago.

“This is for my father,” he said, and then ripped her head straight off, just as she had done to the Master, Cyril.

Her body fell limp to the floor, and Lucien looked at the head in his hands. The eyes were wide with surprise, and the smile was gone, nothing but a wide, silent scream remaining.

He threw her head across the cave, then he dined on her blood for a while. Finally he took off flying through the corridor of the cave, back toward the sea.

He was going to have a bit of fun while he was visiting Honduras.

“Lucien, what have you done?” Isabella was behind him. When she had arrived he did not know.

He turned the chair he sat in to face her. “What do you mean?”

Isabella began to pace. “First you tell me your mother has died in an accident in Honduras, like I am too damn stupid to know what you did. Then it is all over the television that the entire area there has gone up in flames. They cannot even count the bodies of our dead Family!”

Lucien closed his eyes against her verbal onslaught. “I don’t know. Maybe someone was smoking in bed.”

“Don’t lie to me!” she screamed. “You are eighteen in one month, and you have done nothing but wreak havoc the world over! What the heck are you doing?”

Now he stood and walked to her, taking her face in his hands. “I am just having a little fun, Isabella. I think it is out of my system now.”

“I hope so,” she told him. “Right now we have Family fighting and rioting, murdering each other all over, and you have done nothing to amend it. You went to California under the guise of bringing peace, and as soon as you left the body count sky rocketed. The people are reveling in the violence!”

Lucien turned and stood before the fire in the family room. “I am due to go to Spain on a flight tomorrow to deal with the violence there. I will make it right.”

“Well,” she began, her voice calmer. “I am scheduled to go with my father to Germany for one month to deal with the chaos there, as you remember. You scheduled my trip.”

“Yes, Isabella, and I appreciate all your help.”

Now she walked around to face him. “This is how it will be, Lucien DeSai. Are you listening closely?”

He stared into her eyes and nodded. “I will return the evening before you come into full power, we will spend that evening together, and celebrate your eighteenth birthday,” she said.

  “Yes?” he replied.

“You will decide by then if you want me, or if you want this… this destruction. You will not have both,” she said calmly.

Lucien smiled. “If we died together would it not be perfect?”

Isabella slapped him hard across the face. His hand went to his face, surprised.

“This, or me. Destruction or life eternally with me,” she began. “I will die if you see fit, but know that we will not be together if that is the final outcome. You will go down with this world alone.”

Isabella walked away from him. She stopped at the door. “I will sleep at my parents’ tonight; we are leaving for Germany before dawn. If you choose life the people will follow. If you choose death, well, why send me then?”

With that she was gone, and Lucien sat back down in the chair.

She was right, the world was in utter chaos, but he loved it. The bloodshed and the anger were like a wonderful meal to him, and he wanted it to continue. His plan was to set the world aflame in its entirety, on his eighteenth birthday. It would only take one breath from his mouth to do so. The Powers had given him such strength.

But he had never envisioned dying alone. He had some romantic picture of the planet going down while he held the hand of his beloved Isabella, but he knew she would not comply. She was furious.

He had a choice to make.

But he had a month to make it. In the meantime, while she was away, he would enjoy the carnage. He would even incite more of it in Spain, and maybe he would stay a few days to watch the party. The thought made him laugh out loud.

He had plenty of time to watch things go up in smoke…

  Chapter 23

The room was dark, the only light being eighteen candles that burned brightly on top of a chocolate cake covered in raspberry glaze.

Isabella stood, beautiful in red, across the table from him. She had just arrived that evening from Germany, where things had seemed to calm down a bit. She looked stunning. She would celebrate his biggest birthday with him, and she would expect to hear his decision.

Lucien approached her from the other side of the table. “You are striking, my Isabella.’

“Have you come to a conclusion?’ she asked seriously. She would not be deterred by flattery.

Lucien nodded. “I have. I will save it for after the cake.”

They stood silent, both of them watching the candles burn in the darkness. Finally Isabella spoke. “I bought you a gift in Germany,” she told him without looking at him.

She turned around and dug through her bag. When she turned back to him she held a small white box with a red ribbon on it.

“Happy eighteenth birthday, Lucien. You have always been the love of my life.”

He took the box. “Thank you, Isabella.” With that he pulled on the ribbon and removed it. He then took the cover off the box and gazed at the gift inside.

It was a large gold ring. Two gold dragons made up the band, and they were obviously making love. Their eyes were rubies, and there was a tiny black onyx on each dragon in the place its heart would be.

Lucien removed the ring and put it on the pinky finger of his right hand; it fit perfectly. It was exquisite, and he looked up at her with his eyes filled with love.

  “Thank you, Isabella,” he said.

After a moment he spoke again. “As soon as the candles are blown out I come into power. It is finally time.”

A chill ran over the back of his future bride. “Yes, Lucien, and I am hoping for the very best, for all eternity.”

“I am ready,” he told her, “are you? Midnight is almost here, the very time of my birth. I am counting down.”

  “I was born ready.”

Lucien reached across the table and took both of her hands in his. He looked into her eyes for a long moment, and she gazed into his. Suddenly he looked down at the cake and the flickering candles.

“I love you, Isabella, with all my soul. Count with me.”

  So
together they counted down to the midnight hour. “Five, four, three, two…

As the clock chimed twelve o’clock Lucien DeSai let out a slight puff of his breath, and the candles flickered into darkness.

  ABOUT THE AUTHOR

I am a father of two beautiful children, Jon and Kim. They are my motivating forces; they are the lighthouse in this vast ocean. In this life, they are the air that I breathe; they are the oasis in this desert of uncertainty. They are my greatest joy in life, and my number one priority. I have a long list of hobbies, and I attribute that to my lust for life! I like to surround myself with positive people, who share the same interests. Family values, the arts, outdoors, nature, and travel are tops on my list. I embrace attending cultural and artistic events because I believe dramatic self-expression is the window to the soul. I wear my heart on my sleeve, and I still believe in the act of chivalry, and I always treat people they way I want to be treated.
