– Human Legion Forces Digital Manuals
At the successful inception of the Human Legion under General Arun McEwan during the treacherous and tumultuous time of the Free Corps Mutiny, all military manuals were re-designated as Human Legion Forces Digital Manuals (HLF: DM), but the numerical nomenclature remained unchanged. In addition to changing the name, the administrative specialists of the Human Legion also went back and swapped out every reference to the ‘Human Marine Corps’ with ‘Human Legion Forces’.

— HMF: DM 5.10.4 and 5.10.5 Tables of Content
Shortly after a young warrior, growing up in a crèche with his/her fellow warriors to be, learns to read, he or she begins the long process of becoming a living, breathing embodiment of the DMs. Human Marines don’t just learn the tactical manuals stored within the Human Marine Forces Digital Library Database, they become the tactically proficient breathing versions of them. The two most commonly used DMs are the 5.10.4 and the 5.10.5, because they teach the small unit tactics which define much of a Marine’s life. While some Human Marines will later earn promotions to senior sergeants and have need of higher level tactics, most will never advance beyond tactically operating their fire team and section. For those interested in a snap-shot of the scope of this knowledge base, we have obtained and posted the table of contents for the previously mentioned digital manuals.

— HMF: DM 10.1.1 Common Marine Terminology
Within any military organization there exists a standard set of terminology which one must know in order to be able to function and to appropriately communicate with your peers. Listed below are just a brief example of some of the range of terms used by the Human Marine Corps, all of which are catalogued in the DM 10.1.1, the appropriate Digital Manual. If this sparks your curiosity, check out the manual from your local digital library and spend a year or two reading it from cover to cover. If you feel that this would be a detriment to your mental stability, go ahead and burn off a few rounds on your favorite SA-71!
ACE-2 Combat Suit, Sniper Variant- This ACE-2 Combat Suit model is specifically designed to serve one purpose, that of the sniper performing his role. Most snipers are never issued these variants, as they trade some defensive capabilities for the extra power needed to run its communications jamming and its enhanced stealth capabilities. The exact nature of these are so classified that even the knowledge of their existence is considered privileged intelligence.
AG-1 Ammunition Carousel- A dull gray plastic bulb filled with bullets, darts and shells, a reservoir of sabot resin and a power pack. The power pack’s ability to recharge itself is considered such a breakthrough of science that it is viewed as akin to magic by the troops who handle them daily.
AG-2 Ammunitions Carousel- A dark blue plastic bulb filled with bullets, darts and shells, a reservoir of sabot resin and a power pack. This differs from the AG-1 in that it is significantly larger and designed to be used in the Integrated SA-76(h) Sniper Rifle. This ammunitions carousel produces a round which is longer than the standard SA-71 round, making this carousel itself longer and larger than the AG-1.
AG-3 Ammunitions Carousel- An ammunitions carousel which is worn as a backpack by the Marine operating the SA-75 GX Mobile Mini Cannon. The exterior is made of the same ceramalloy as the ACE Combat Suit, and linked in so that it displays the same coloring or stealth feature as the Combat Suit. The lower quarter of the pack is dedicated to the extra power packs needed to operate the mobile mini cannon, with the remaining top component containing the large dark brown plastic bulb filled with bullets, darts and shells, and a reservoir of sabot resin.
r /> AI- Artificial Intelligence used to run battle armor and various other endeavors, to include: flying spacecraft, flying shuttles and controlling the ships. There are several known models of the AI program, in addition to the multiple personality possibilities created by its interaction with its human partner.
• Communications Variant- An AI model that specializes in hacking electronic networks to allow them to be used by allied forces and to jam their ability to be used by enemy forces. Normally reserved for Engineering AI Variants because of this ability.
• Engineering Variant- An AI model that specializes in the creation and destruction of technology, buildings and the surrounding terrain. If God or Man could build it, the Engineer could destroy it. If an Engineer could destroy it, then they could rebuild it even better. At least this was what their official motto would have you believe. This model was so good at utilizing the natural creativity of humanity that it was quietly removed from Human service by the White Knight overlords.
• Naval Variant- An AI model that specializes in controlling naval vessels and maximizing their effectiveness in conjunction with its multispecies crew.
• Scout Variant- An AI model that specializes in extracting and extrapolating data for reconnaissance purposes.
• Sniper Variant- An AI model that specializes in extreme distance marksmanship and the other skills needed to complete any sniper mission. This skill set includes camouflaging abilities, both its digital and electronic signatures, and the physical camouflage needed to hide the Marine it is paired with in any medium where it might be working. This AI also serves the traditional spotter role, allowing the Marine to work alone, and further minimizing the chances for exposure.
AR- The common abbreviation or shorthand for Automatic Rifleman on tactical diagrams.
Automatic Rifleman- The automatic rifleman supports the Human Marine Corps fire team and section with both offense and defense capabilities by combining devastating firepower with the decisive maneuverability provided by Marines outfitted in the ACE Combat Suit System. This weapon allows the Marine to maximize the number of rounds going down range towards enemy targets. Traditionally, this Marine is tasked with overwhelming volumes of suppressive covering fire, provided at medium and long range, allowing the standard riflemen to eliminate the specific targets. The Automatic Rifleman’s standard issue SA-75(h) GX Mobile Mini Cannon is assisted by its large ammunition capacity, giving a Fire Team/Section a weapon that maintains a consistent rate of fire to provide cover for an advancing unit. Unfortunately, this weapon system has its drawbacks, particularly the rate which it goes through ammunition. Further, the weight of this rifle and its accompanying AG-3 Ammunition Carousel would be troublesome for anyone not outfitted into the standard Marine Corps Battle Suits. Due to this, the Automatic Rifleman is burdened with a significantly larger power pack and ammunitions carousel, slowing him down slightly.
GR- The common abbreviation or shorthand for Grenadier on tactical diagrams.
Grenadier- This term refers to the Human Marine Corps Grenadier, a vital member to any Marine Fire Team. He is armed with the standard SA-71(h) Carbine, however carries significantly more grenades for his weapons launching platform, in addition to having access to classes of grenades not issued to standard riflemen. This Marine can deliver a variety of rounds at point and area targets from medium to long ranges. While this Marine is issued a variety of grenade launching capabilities, his first role is that of a rifleman and his grenadier role is secondary.
NCO- The common abbreviation or shorthand for Non Commissioned Officer.
Phonetic Alphabet- The phonetic alphabet is a set of words used to represent a specific letter or number during radio conversation, allowing for a more accurate communication regardless of accent, speech impediment or hearing limitation.
RM- The common abbreviation or shorthand for Rifleman on tactical diagrams.
Rifleman- This term refers to the most basic Human Marine personnel, who is armed with a SA-71(h) Carbine, and is normally one of the most junior enlisted ranks.
TL- The common abbreviation or short hand for Team Leader, the NCO who leads a Marine Fire Team.
SA-75(h) GX Mobile Mini Cannon- This is an individually operated, belt fed, fire team and section automatic rifle, which is carried in lieu of the standard SA-71(h) Carbine. In laymen’s terms, it is a machine gun with a heavier barrel and a larger energy reserve than its SA-71 cousin, because of the increased size of its energy pack. Its AG-3 Ammunition Carousel feeds rounds into the belt tubing connected to the rifle, allowing for a continuous stream of rounds. This rifle is assigned to a Marine who has his standard AI variant set to operate this cannon, allowing the weapon to be utilized to the full extent of its capabilities. Further, the automatic rifleman is linked into the team leader’s AI to facilitate a more directed target acquisition in keeping with the needs of the small unit commanders.
SA-76(h) Integrated Sniper Rifle- This is the sniper variant of the standard SA-71(h) Carbine and it comes equipped with a thicker barrel to compensate for the extra kinetic energy which goes through it in the execution of its sniper duties. This carbine also has a longer barrel, allowing the rounds to stabilize over extreme distances. The exact maximum effective range for this rifle isn’t known, as it is highly classified, but it is a significant improvement over the standard carbine variant. This weapon system also features an extremely effective scope, allowing for pinpoint accuracy and the trademark precision of Human Marine Corps snipers galaxy wide. These rifles are designed to be paired with Sniper Variant AIs, which facilitate the successful completion of the mission. In addition to a stronger barrel, these rifles fire a longer round that is also of a larger caliber, maximizing the distance capabilities of the sniper rifle. The sniper also carries auxiliary AG-1 Ammunition Carousels, allowing them to temporarily operate the rifle in the standard carbine mode. While on sniping missions, the Human Marine in question might also be issued specialized ACE-2 Combat Suits. This rifle is often referred to simply as “the Sam,” a reference to word for the letter ‘S’ in the phonetic alphabet, because the rifle was originally listed as the Sniper Rifle, SA-76(h) and ‘sniper’ also starts with an ‘s’. Now the rifle’s official nomenclature is simply listed as the SA-76(h) Sniper Rifle, rather than the previously inverted concoction used in the past, with the parenthesized lowercase ‘h’ denoting its configuration for Human Marines. This rifle, when configured for other species has another letter designation to indicate the species anatomy it was designed to work for.
Spotter- Traditionally, this person would work closely with a sniper to assist in all facets of his or her ability to complete the mission. They also defend the sniper when he is behind the scope lining up his shot. This is a critical requirement, though ideally nobody would know the sniper-spotter team was even there. Finally, the spotter assists the sniper in tweaking his or her positioning and aim while adjusting for wind, terrain and other targeting issues specific to the mission. By the time of the Human Marine Corps, this role was largely taken up by AIs and other assistive technology while the sniper teams were paired to maintain morale and mental stability.

– HMF: DM 15.1.1 Building Fortified Cities
When an empire establishes a base, given its domains are spread across untold light years, the idea that each one will be anything more than utilitarian is comical. There are many reasons why you can’t start by building impressive temples and grand monuments towards posterity, but the first is the sheer distance required to cart in supplies. Starting a new base requires utilitarian functionality, shored up with the knowledge that this base will meet the minimum requirements to sustain life throughout the years while waiting for more supplies.
Standard building procedures require the building to be built in several intentional steps, designed to maximize effectiveness. This is especially critical because even a small error would set back
the building by years. Therefore, the first step in constructing a new fortified city requires the builder to pick the strategic location for the planned city. They would then send in at least one large automated FCB-316 City Boring Drone, although for a standardized city they would send in four. This is significant, as each drilled hole is capable of standing alone, even when interlinked within the confines of the standard city model. This is particularly significant in the tactical sense, as a city cannot be defeated until it is defeated in its entirety.
The FCB-316s, or Fortified City Builders tac 316, are most commonly called City Boring Drones, which is a fancy way of saying that they are gigantic machines designed to be used once to bore, or dig, a large hole in the ground. Once the hole is dug and the sides of the new hole are reinforced, the FCB-316 positions itself so that it could resume its digging if needed at some future date. Further, once it has completed its primary mission, it serves as a power source for the newly constructed city. The FCB-316 can house a crew of five, but is also capable of being fully automated and run remotely from the space vessel that transported them. This automation feature is further used once the machine becomes the new power plant to control the base via the CIC in the event of hostile actions against the city.
After the initial hole is drilled, the habdisks are lowered into the void created by the FCB-316 a tier at a time. They then begin their initial egress from the hole and their assent back to the surface, stopping once they clear the outer perimeter of the hole. This initial egress frees the habdisk to utilize their emergency escape pod function. Once they have begun digging enough to start the escape, creating the visual effect of an upside-down umbrella, they turn off their digging engines and resume their inert status until called upon in an emergency. They have often been compared to the emergency escape pods that pilots jettison from doomed craft.
While the FCB-316 machine drills the hole for the city, it further reinforces it by separating out the un-useable materials and the useable metals. The un-useable material is sent to the surface while the useable metal is heated, and made into large corrugated piping that reinforces the hole into which the city will be built. When the square pods that compromise the city, also known as habdisks, are lowered in and the freshly dug hole is surrounded with ballast, the city becomes capable of withstanding all but the most dedicated assaults. After the functional compartments of each floor of the city are lowered in, building the city a tier (or floor) at a time, passageways between the compartments can be built.
