Angie’s fork clattered to her plate and Sean guffawed at her outraged expression. Luke actually blushed. “I just meant I’m lucky to see you again Angie,” he said glaring at Sean.

Angie rolled her eyes, hadn’t they joked the last time, that they had to sleep together three times before a proposal? And why was the thought of sleeping near him not quite anathema to her anymore? And why were her thoughts moving to more than just sleeping? He wasn’t her type. Not at all. She blushed as his eyebrows rose at her flustered expression, and then suddenly his features softened and he gave her a heart stopping smile. Her gaze rested on his lips for an instant before Sean spoke, breaking the spell.

“It’s time for the ball to drop,” Sean announced.

“What?” Angie drew her attention from Luke and turned her stunned gaze on Sean for a moment.

“I think he means it’s almost midnight,” Lillian giggled.

They all leaned out of the window, watching as Samson their building super, presided over the lowering of their own sparkling makeshift version of the New York City, Times Square ball drop in the courtyard of their apartment complex, counting down with their neighbors to a brand New Year, blowing plastic party horns and tossing endless streamers and confetti into the air.

Sean took Lillian in his arms and kissed her thoroughly. Luke looked at Angie, and she walked into his open arms. This time, it was no sweet gentle little kiss. This time Luke kissed her with all the pent up longing he’d been harboring for the past weeks. His lips touching teasing and savoring every nuance, every corner of her delightful mouth, reveling in her unrestrained response. The spell broken only by Sean noisily clearing his throat, as Lillian insisted the four of them hold hands and end their evening by singing “Auld Lang Syne”.

Luke knew when he’d returned home from Milan that his life was going to change, but he hadn’t expected to want this kind of change. He’d begun daydreaming, thinking during the day at work how nice it would be to have what Sean and Lillian had, to be able to call someone who truly cared about him in the middle of the day, just to say ‘Hello’, and ‘I love you’. Not a single one of his dates had ever said that to him. But then he’d never dated anyone long enough.

Now he lay on the couch for the third time, across from Angie, she wasn’t asleep he could tell by her unmeasured breathing. She too must be remembering their joke about expecting a commitment after spending three nights together. Even if it was only sharing their friends’ couches. But now he wanted more. Much more. Angie had her eyes closed, he scrutinized her features and the soft kissable lips he’d tasted earlier when they’d rung in the New Year. Maybe the sudden rush of desire had transmitted itself to her, because slowly she opened her eyes and looked directly at him. Her lips parted, then suddenly her eyes twinkled with mischief and she said, “Luke, what on earth is taking you so long?”

He grinned. “Hell if I know!” He slid from the couch and knelt beside her, she slipped her arms around his neck and kissed him. He’d always been the one to initiate anything between himself and a woman before, this was refreshing. It was wonderful in fact. He felt her soft lips moving over his, and then she touched the tip of her tongue to his and he was engulfed in a surge of desire so fierce, for a moment he was afraid he was about to lose control. She ran her lips over his jawline, and caressed the long masculine column of his throat, touching and licking softly, it was the most erotic thing he’d ever experienced.

As though sensing his need, Angie simply said. “Go with it Luke.”

While he took a steadying breath, unable to believe this was actually happening, she tossed aside first her own sweater, and then helped to lift his over his head. She ran her fingertips down the smooth plains of his taut chest and abs, he flinched when she came too close to the waist band of his jeans, he was so hard it was almost becoming painful.

Angie’s eyes met his, reflecting the same light of desire he was trying so hard to control. He rose and quickly closed and locked the door to the living room and helped her shed the rest of her garments. He wanted to take it slow, but he couldn’t and apparently neither could she, because the instant they were both naked on the rug before the roaring fire, she straddled him and took him inside. He watched as she rode him hard, reaching up to caress her full breasts, wondering why or how he’d ever been attracted to the thin models he’d dated before, she was soft, warm and lovely, and one hell of a lover. He bucked beneath her, feeling his climax rolling slowly though him like a fierce but slow moving earthquake, and felt her convulse around him. It was the most satisfying experience of his life.

They had barely recovered their senses when Luke, still hard, flipped her onto her back and slid back inside. Angie groaned and chuckled at the same time.

“This is going to be the longest night of your life,” he whispered against her lips as he began to move in long slow thrusts, she cupped his backside, urging him to hurry, to pound inside her harder and faster. Apparently she liked it the way he did. Vigorous, and with nothing held back. The only sounds in the room were the crackle of the fire and the tiny breathless pants coming from between her lips, followed by a moan of pure unadulterated pleasure as she reached her peak; the exquisite sound, and the sensation of her body rippling intimately against him pulled him right over the precipice with her. He didn’t ever want to leave this spot.

Luke stroked his fingers down her back and over the curve of her hip. She was soft and silky to the touch. Skin that had likely never been exposed to the sun, it was so exquisitely perfect in its texture. He wanted to discover if she felt that way from head to toe. Now that they had expended a little energy, he could take his time. He moved over her, kissing her softly, allowing his lips to trail down from her warm pink cheeks to softly nip and lick at her delicate earlobes, and following the curve of her shoulder, he worked his way downwards. Her breasts were pure silk, her nipples hard and thrusting into his palms, he caressed the underside of each breast and stroked his fingers across her rib cage as he suckled each of her nipples in turn, feeling the thrum of her heartbeat escalating beneath his caressing fingertips.

Feeling more powerful and vibrantly alive than he had in years with her responses urging him onward, he swirled his tongue around her navel, enjoying her soft chuckle and the sudden indrawn breath as he parted her thighs and enjoyed gazing on the perfect place between her legs, in the soft glow of the firelight. She squirmed when he stroked a finger across her folds and slid two fingers inside to feel her muscles clenching, drawing him in, stroking where he’d planted himself only a short time ago. He watched her hips move with the rhythm he created, and stroked a fingertip across her pleasure bud, thrilling to see her hips rise up as she chased the ultimate height of the new climax he gave her. Still reeling, her flesh sensitized, she was breathing deeply, her small hands caressing his hair, when he bowed his head and placed his lips on her still throbbing bud, suckling gently, in seconds he had her climaxing a second time, feeling the ripples slaking their way through her body. She urged him upwards, unsure at first of her intent, he complied. Finding himself straddling her, he braced himself on his palms as she slid further down, lying beneath him in the flickering light of the dying fire. She slaked out her tongue and licked the head of his shaft, as she caressed his length with her fingertips, then encased him in a tight fist as she stroked the head with the very tip of her tongue once more. Watching her performance in the dim light, her pink tongue circling his head, the expression of sensual enjoyment on her beautiful face, he groaned, trying to maintain control as she urged him closer and took him fully between her lips. She cupped his buttocks, urging him to move and he pumped between her lips, the tight hot feel of her suckling, her tongue moving over his most sensitive flesh drove him almost insane. The most earth shattering climax he’d ever experienced rolled its way up from his toes, in a giant wave of ecstasy and all coherent thought left him as he exploded with pleasure.

  Chapter Seven

It was about three in the morning when the
y quietly slipped into the shower together, slowly caressing and teasing, moving in symphony, but in total silence, unwilling to risk awakening Sean and Lillian. Luke had never known such a sensual experience in his life.

“Angie,” he whispered softly, loving the sound of her name on his lips and unable to maintain his silence any longer as she slid the soap gently between her hands and over his body, caressing every plain and valley, cupping his balls and stroking her touch across his hard thighs. Then she moved to stand behind him to soap him from behind, trailing soft kisses down his shoulders and back, he’d had no idea his back was so sensitive. She grazed her teeth along the curve of each butt cheek, and he prayed she’d urge him to turn and take him between her lips again. He would never be able to so much as see her smile without getting hard in the future. She had a very talented mouth. “Please?” he begged. He’d never begged for anything before, but his body was thrumming with need, and before he knew it, she had him sheathed between her warm moist lips, her tongue doing incredible things to his sensitized flesh. Suddenly he needed to be inside her once more. In a show of strength he wasn’t aware he possessed, he lifted her into his arms, and slid her down onto his shaft. She hooked her legs around his waist, her arms around his neck and hung on for the ride.

A pounding at the door as they were drying each other off startled them both, guiltily they exchanged a quick glance, had they been noisier than they’d realized?

“Luke, Angie? Lillian is sick…I need help!” Sean’s frantic voice called out.

They both bolted for the door, finishing dressing as they went.

Luke was calling an ambulance, and Angie dashed to Lillian side. She was groaning and holding her belly. “I knew it wouldn’t be easy having triplets…but it’s way too soon for problems…” She was crying softly, tears streaming endlessly down her pale cheeks. Angie held her in her arms, trying to keep her calm and reassure her it would all be okay and desperately hoping that it really would.

Sean was frantic with worry as he hopped into the ambulance with Lillian, tearfully holding her hand and whispering reassurances. Luke and Angie followed in Luke’s car.

The emergency room was crowded, but Lillian was quickly wheeled into a side ward and then rushed off to the Maternity Unit for tests.

The three paced together. Luke watched Sean, despite the worrying circumstances, he was incredibly jealous of the love his two friends shared. Angie squeezed his hand, and he looked down into her eyes. Sean had told him that he and Angie were more compatible than he could possible know. He was right. He wanted everything Sean and Lillian had, and he believed Angie did too, she was sweet kind and loving and he’d be a complete fool to let her go. He’d lost touch with who he was in the past few years, business had become paramount in his life, having someone to share these moments in life with, was way more important than any of the numerous possessions he’d accumulated. It was like a sudden dousing with cold water, a wakeup call.

The doctor was walking slowly toward them. Sean was almost trembling with anxiety as he awaited the news. “Lillian is fine, and your babies too…”

Luke didn’t hear the rest of it, because Sean whooped in relief and dashed off after the doctor to see his Sweet Lily, and Angie jumped into Luke’s arms.

“When you said this was going to be the longest night of my life…I didn’t think this was what you meant!” Angie teased now that they were able to breathe again.

Eyes twinkling Luke kissed her soundly and they followed slowly, hand in hand, to give Sean a chance to visit with Lillian alone before they walked in.

  Chapter Eight

It was New Year’s Day, the magic of the night’s celebration, making love with the gorgeous Luke and then Lillian’s scare, had taken its toll and Angie was both physically and emotionally exhausted. Suddenly all she wanted to do was sleep. After they had briefly visited Lillian and reassured themselves that she was okay. Luke had taken her hand in his and they walked out to his car together.

  “And Sean?” she asked.

“He’ll be fine, he can call me or a cab if he needs a ride later, but I doubt he’ll be leaving Lillian’s side anytime soon.” The hospital had decided to keep her in for twenty-four hours for observation. They stood looking at each other in the crisp morning light and neither seemed to know what to say.

“I’d better go home,” Angie decided. Hoping instead he would ask her to go home with him.

  “I’ll drive you,” he offered.

“That’s okay, I could use a few moments alone, anyway. And I only live two blocks from here.”

Luke nodded, and hopped into his car. Angie stood watching, unable to help the sudden tears that sprang to her eyes as he simply drove away. Her hopes of something more shattered, and suddenly she felt very much alone.

It was still early New Year’s morning, and even after showering once again, and changing, Angie could still feel Luke’s imprint on her body and the silken texture of him on her tongue. She was still far too restless to sleep despite being awake all night. She decided to go down to her store, though they were closed for the day, there was always work to be done. Orders came in online, she could make a start on filling those ready for delivery the following morning.

She brewed a fresh pot of coffee as she worked, but her stomach rebelled at the thought of food. A dozen orders kept her very busy, some tall orders too. Who on earth wanted three dozen roses fashioned into a giant bouquet banner to be delivered first thing the next morning? There was hardly enough time to put them together, it was a good job she’d come in so early. The door chimes clanged as someone walked in, looking at the clock, she realized it was barely seven a.m. She ought to have locked the door while she was here alone. Very foolish of her. Hurrying out to the front of the store she paused at the sight of the tall dark figure standing silhouetted in the doorway. “Lucas!” she exclaimed.

“So, I’m back to being Lucas again? I guess I probably deserve that,” he said sheepishly. “I came to pick up a special order.”

  “Oh?”

“I requested several dozen red roses fashioned into a special banner.”

Angie went into the back and brought out the newly finished beautiful creation. “Would you like a card to write a message?” she asked, biting back tears.

“No, thanks, I think I’ll just deliver this message in person,” he said, taking the roses, he handed them back to her.

  “But…?”

The lush red roses were their own message, fashioned into two very special words. Marry me.

Lucas grinned as he watched realization dawn on Angie’s sweet and loving features, but wasn’t prepared for the cascade of tears that coursed down her cheeks.

“I did say three nights and you have to marry me…” he reminded her, drawing her into his embrace.

She slipped her arms around him, holding him close as she nestled her cheek softly against his chest.

He stroked her hair. “I love you Angie.”

  “I thought…”

“I know, I’m so sorry! Other than in business, I’m just hopeless with words. I didn’t know what to say, how to handle things…and you are my first…”

Her eyebrows went up. He grinned wryly.

“First real love. I’ve never wanted to get involved before. I can’t imagine being without you now. You are everything I could ever want in my life. So what’s it to be, before I keel over with suspense here?” he asked, trying to appear calm, but her heart jumped when she realized that he truly was nervous, and he was watching her with so much love and hope in his eyes. He wasn’t cold or arrogant at all. Just afraid.

“I love you too, and yes I will marry you, Luke,” she said softly, “Happy New Year.”

“Yeah,” Luke said, gently kissing her beautiful lips. “It will be.”
