“I ask the parents of this child, who have you asked to be the Naming Parents?”

“Sofia Onlinger Bennett and Jacob Bennett,” Stela responded.

“I now ask Empress Stelaphina to bestow the realm name upon the child,” the Sanctus commanded.

“The child’s realm name will be Frederick, our former Emperor,” Stela announced.

“I now ask Empress Stelaphina to bestow the kingdom name upon the child,” the Sanctus asked.

“The child’s kingdom name shall be George,” Stela answered.

“Jacob Bennett, do you promise to watch over this child and see that he is raised to do his duty to realm and kingdom?”

  “I do, Sanctus,” Jacob responded.

“Sofia Bennett, do you promise to watch over this child and see that he is raised to do his duty to realm and kingdom?”

  “I do, Sanctus,” Sofia responded.

The Sanctus took the child from Sofia. He held him high for those gathered to witness. “I name you Imperial Prince Royal Zephyr Frederick George Brandt.” He lowered the child.

“One moment, Sanctus,” Stela paused the ceremony. “Seeing that the name Brandt belonged to the Emperor Consort and most are aware of the scandal between him and my sister, I wish the child’s name to be changed to Onlinger.”

“Empress, this is quite unusual,” the Sanctus responded.

“Stela, why would you do this to me, here in front of everyone?” Sofia quietly said to her sister. She could hear the whispers coming from those gathered. It was like their voices were in her head. The words echoed in her ears. ‘I cannot believe she made that whore the Naming Parent’, ‘If she were my sister and I was Empress, she would never see the light of day.' She was infuriated. She looked at Jacob, his face showed his embarrassment.

“You have come into your power, Sofia. Do not fear the voices, use them to your advantage,” the voice was familiar but she did not know where it was coming from. “You can read the thoughts of others. No one has spoken out against you,” the voice echoed between the others filling her head. “You will learn to master your skill and will be able to block out those voices you do not wish to hear.” She looked around, out over the crowd. Braynard was in the back of the room, he gave her a nod and smile.

“Empress, might I suggest combining the two names, it might be better received,” the Sanctus whispered to Stela.

  “Very well,” she responded.

Again he rose the child high, “I name you Zephyr Frederick George Brandt-Onlinger.” He looked over to Stela. She nodded her approval.

The crowd remained silent, not sure of the appropriate reaction. Stela stood and took the child from the Sanctus. “I am sorry Sofia, but I do not want Zephyr known as Edmund’s child. I did not mean to embarrass you or Jacob.” She walked down the aisle back to the salon, knowing what was to come. Sofia and Jacob followed her out. The crowd looked on, confused.

Stela entered the room and handed the child to his nanny, who quickly removed him. After Jacob entered, the door was closed behind them.

“How dare you do that to me? Was that your plan all along? To embarrass me? Is that why you asked me to be his Naming Parent?” Sofia was furious.

“Stela, I have to agree, what you did to us both was unforgivable,” Jacob added.

“I did not intend to do that. When I heard the name, I could not allow Zephyr to be branded with his name,” Stela tried to apologize.

“I do not care your reason. You humiliated me. Why do you not ever stop to think how your words impact others?” Sofia’s voice rising with each word.

“You are one to talk about words impacting others,” Stela did not want to fight, but Sofia was not going to stop. “I am sorry to you both.”

Sofia just looked at her sister. She wanted to hit her but knew she would be severely punished if she did. “Jacob, I am sorry you were submitted to this. Had I known my sister’s plans, I would have advised you to refuse her request.”

“I think I will be leaving Jascaessau, immediately, without your mother,” Jacob said. “I am done with you and your family, Sofia. Empress, I will serve you as is my duty, but I will not return to Jascaessau unless through Imperial Order. Please respect my position on this, Empress.” Jacob bowed and left the two alone.

“Are you happy, Stela?” Sofia’s anger grew. “He was going to give mother a chance to live. What will you do with her now?”

“I am truly sorry, Sofia. It was not my intention when the ceremony started.” Stela pleaded with her sister to believe her.

‘I cannot believe I have once again ruined my relationship with her. Why do I continually hurt those I care about?’ Sofia could hear her sister’s thoughts. She knew now that Stela meant no harm and it was simply poor judgment on Stela’s part.

“I forgive you. I know you did not mean to hurt me, or Jacob,” Sofia gave her sister a hug, which startled Stela.

“Thank you, Sofia. I really did not mean for it to come out as it did,” Stela smiled weakly.

A knock at the door interrupted their apologies. “Enter,” Stela commanded.

“Majesty, the Sanctus, and Imperial Archduke Bennett would like to speak with you and the Imperial Princess Royal,” Jordan showed the two men in.

“I think it best that all ties between the Bennett’s and the Onlinger’s come to an end. I have asked the Sanctus to grant us an annulment, Sofia, if it pleases you.” Jacob kept his head down as he spoke.

“Thank you, Jacob. I do not want you living in pain any longer. Without me in your life, you will be able to find another who will make you happy. I am sorry that I could not,” Sofia answered softly.

“You made me very happy. It was I that could not please you and for that I am sorry. I am to blame for what occurred between you and the Emperor Consort. Had I been a better husband, perhaps Layla would be mine and not his,” Jacob responded.

“Are you sure this is what you both want?” Stela asked.

“I think it is the best for both of us,” Sofia answered.

“Very well,” the Sanctus responded. “It would seem this was not a marriage blessed by God. I am always saddened to see a marriage end, but I agree this is probably the best for you both.” The Sanctus placed a hand on each of them. “By the authority of the Church of Hulsteria and God, I proclaim the union between Imperial Archduke Jacob Bennett and Imperial Princess Royal Sofia Bennett, dissolved in the eyes of God and Man. Imperial Princess Royal, you may return to the surname of Onlinger. I will have the Order of Annulment written and sent to you at once, Your Imperial Highness.” The Sanctus bowed and left the room.

“Now that I have freed you from our marriage and myself from your family, I hope that we can live in peace,” Jacob said with sadness.

“I wish you would reconsider my mother, Jacob,” Sofia pleaded. “I know you have no reason to take her with you, but you would be doing me a great favor.”

“I have already done you a great favor. I owe you nothing further. I believe your family is poison and I do not wish to take that poison to Uhl.” Jacob resented her asking him.

“You would be doing me a great favor, Jacob,” Stela added. “I know you have been done a great injustice, but if you take our mother with you, she can suffer your anger.”

“It is tempting, Majesty.” Jacob still refused to look at them. “I might agree to take her as long as I am able to do with her as I see fit.”

“What does that mean, Jacob?” Sofia questioned. She knew he was angry with her, but she did not want to see her mother suffer unjust punishment because of her own personal actions.

“She killed the heir to the throne. She killed your brother’s mother and grandmother, I believe any punishment I provide is justified.” Jacob gave her a cold stare.

“You are right, Jacob. She is yours to do with as you please,” Stela agreed. “I will make the announcement before the games. I will strip her of her title and explain that she will be returning to Uhl with you, where she will live as your s
ervant. Thank you.”

“I will remain until after the games. Then Madeline and I will take our leave of Jascaessau. I ask that neither of you tries to reach out to her once she is in my service. If either of you come for her or attempt to communicate with her, I will release her back to you and allow you to deal with her punishment.” Jacob took his leave of the sisters.

“Let us prepare for the games, Sofia,” Stela said. She and her sister headed to their chambers to change for the tournaments.

“Are you going to tell mother of her fate?” Sofia asked as they walked.

“No. I will let her know as she is carried off to join Jacob,” Stela responded coldly.

The stands were filled as Stela made her way out into the courtyard. The contestants were anxiously awaiting the beginning of the games. She looked at them, some in armor, others in simple leather. She hoped the games would not get too violent. While the competitions were customary, she never particularly enjoyed them.

She entered her stand in the middle of the three tournament rings. Her stand had her brother and sisters, as well as the Imperial Grand Archdukes and Duchesses from the kingdoms. Frederick Lester was seated directly behind Stela. She greeted those seated around her.

“Greetings, friends and family,” she yelled out to those gathered. “Before the games begin I want to thank you all for attending. The Naming Ceremony is an important event in the life of Imperial and Royal children. It cements their commitment to kingdom and realm. The ceremony is a joyous occasion, signifying the child has reached an age of safety, an age where their future is a bit more secured.” Stela looked around to those in attendance. She hated to announce her mother’s treason on such a day.

“I would also like to announce that Madeline Onlinger, my mother, is guilty of treason. I will not go into the details of her crimes as I do not believe the details are necessary. Those of the Imperial family have been advised of her indiscretions.” The response from the crowd was overwhelming. Most responded with disbelief. “I have struggled with the proper punishment. I did not relish the thought of taking my own mother’s life, but treason is an offense punishable by death. After long consideration, I have decided to strip her of her title and position. Imperial Archduke Jacob Bennett has agreed to have her return with him to Uhl to serve in his household. After today, she will be but a commoner and will not be privy to the respect of her former position.”

“You cannot do this!” the former Imperial Archduke of Stratton called out.

“Uncle, I think it best that you silence your tongue. Your sister has committed crimes against the realm and this family. Her punishment is lenient for the crimes committed.” Stela quickly addressed her uncle’s words. The man sat back down, not wishing to have his own skeletons dragged out of the closet.

“If there is nothing more about Madeline Onlinger, I believe we should begin the games. The winner of each game today will be offered a position on the Imperial Guard. I look forward to seeing the abilities of the young men of Hulsteria. Now, let the games begin!” she shouted. Then took her seat.

The center ring was the sword fighting. The crier announced the first competitors who entered the ring. A young man from Norland versus an older man from Uhl. The two swung their swords at each other. The metal clashed as sword met sword. The older man lost his balance and fell backward, awarding the younger man a point. The older man quickly jumped to his feet as the younger man’s blade headed towards him. The blade struck the ground with such force it became embedded in the earth. The older man took the opportunity to come at the young man, who freed his sword in time to meet the man’s blade. The younger man moved back, awarding the older man a point. The frustration on the younger man’s face became obvious. He rushed toward his opponent, his blade above his head. The older man met the blow with his sword, but the force of the younger man’s inertia forced him back. He lost his footing and fell once again. The snap was heard over the crowd. The older man could not stand. The bone of his leg protruded from his pants. The women in the crowd let loose moans as the injury became noticeable. The younger man was victorious and would move onto the next round.

The crier announced, “Marcus Samms of Raamsfeld.” Felicia entered the ring.

The crier announced her opponent, “Lawrence Moore from Shoudfield.”

She watched as the man entered the ring. He was in full armor, she in her simple leather. Her heart raced for a moment, fearing she had not properly prepared for the games.

“Samms, is he a relation, Elizabeth?” Frederick asked his wife when Felicia was announced.

“Not that I am aware,” his wife responded. “Though there is something familiar about him. I cannot imagine any of my family appearing before the Empress so dirty.”

Felicia charged Lawrence. He met her sword in mid-air, forcing her back. He was much larger than her. This would be difficult. The first point went to Lawrence.

Harris watched on the side, worrying about her. He knew he could not stop her, but he just hoped she would not be hurt, or worse.

Felicia jumped to her feet. Again she charged at her opponent. This time her momentum got the better of the man and he moved back when the swords clashed, earning her a point. She quickly charged him again. This time it was her who fell back. The second point was awarded to him. One more point and he would win, and it would be over for her. He rushed her as she laid on the ground. She rolled to the side as the sword hit where she had been. ‘Stop. I will not lose,’ She thought to herself. Suddenly Lawrence lowered his sword and knelt before her. She stood and charged him. He raised his sword and was knocked over by force. The score was now tied. She quickly ran for him again. He did not move from his position on the ground until she was on top of him. As the swords met, he fell back once again, securing the last point for Felicia. Felicia stood as the crier announced her the winner.

Sofia watched the young man. She was impressed with his skill and his quick defeat of his opponents. She found him to be quite attractive, even with the dirt covering his face. She stood and went to meet with the victor, closely followed by guards.

“Marcus,” Sofia called out to him. He was standing just outside the ring waiting for his next match.

“Imperial Princess Royal,” Felicia bowed as she approached.

“You are quite skilled with the sword,” Sofia said. “I would like to offer you my favor in your fights.” She removed the handkerchief from her sleeve and handed it to Felicia.

“I would be honored, Highness. However a married woman may not offer her favor to any but her husband,” Felicia responded. She had not seen Sofia in many years. She remembered the Princess Royal being lovely when they were children, but now she was a beauty beyond words. “I will fight well for you but will not the Imperial Archduke be upset?”

“The Archduke and I are no longer married. I am free to offer my favor to whomever I choose. I see great things and would like you to fight in my honor,” she curtsied and returned to her seat.

The games continued with both Harris and Felicia defeating their opponents. Harris used his skill to defeat his opponents, while Felicia used her power to make her opponents succumb.

Harris was called to the third ring for his next fighting opponent. His knuckles were bloody and sore. His face was cut and bruised from the fists that had made contact. He was now to face the last opponent. If he won this, he would be the victor for fighting and assured a position on the guard. His opponent entered the ring. He was a large brute of a man from Moorland. The fighters of Moorland were well known. Their strength was unmatched, as was their stamina. The man appeared to be nothing but muscle as he lumbered closer to Harris. He stood at least a half foot taller than Harris. This was not going to be easy.

He looked over toward the sword fighting where Felicia seemed to be holding her own. He could not focus on her now. He needed to defeat the behemoth standing in front of him. The man came toward him. His reach was more than Harris expected. His fist made
contact with Harris’ nose. He felt the heat of the blood running over his lips. Harris returned the punch, only able to reach the man’s side. The force of the punch made Harris’ hand feel like his bones were crushed. How was he to defeat this beast? The man grabbed Harris by the arm and flung him across the ring. He landed heavy against the rim of the ring. It felt as if his ribs had snapped but he could not give up. He stood as the man charged towards him. He braced himself for the impact. Suddenly the man stopped. He just stood there. Harris rushed him and was able to make contact with the giant’s face. The man did not react. Harris took the opportunity to continue hitting him. His hands ached from the punches. The man’s face was covered with blood, but Harris did not know if the blood was the man’s or his own. His next hit found the man’s nose. The blood quickly started to run out and down the man’s face. The man started to sway. Harris stepped aside as the man fell face first to the ground. Harris looked around as the crowd erupted into cheers.

The crier made the announcement, “In games of fighting, the winner is Harris Morrison of Raasmfeld.” The crier raised Harris’ arm high in victory. He looked over at his opponent who still laid there, not moving. He was not sure what happened or how he won, but he was happy. He looked over to see Felicia was being named a victor. He knew he would have to face her if she continued to win. He exited the ring and waited to see who he would be fighting next in the swords competition.

“You need to stop the bleeding,” the voice whispered. He knew immediately it was the Scientia. “Use your powers to seal the wounds.”

“How am I to do that?” Harris asked though no one was around.

“You can heat yourself and use your fingers to stop the bleeding. Fire and the heat have no effect on you but will close the wounds. Just concentrate. See your body heating. Then place your hand over your face,” the voice was specific. “You will need to be fit when you face Felicia. I fear she is still contemplating killing you. She helped you in your match. She stopped your opponent from attacking you. It would seem she wants the satisfaction of being the one who ends your life.”
