She swallowed hard, not liking the direction of his words. Things were just starting to work out again. She liked the way things were. She couldn’t take it if he unloaded another secret on her.
“No, Reid. I don’t—”
He kissed her to stop her from talking. When he eased back, she met his gaze. “I love you,” he whispered. “I’ve loved you for so long, I can’t remember a time I didn’t. I need you in my life and I want you so badly. Not just the sex, which is pretty great.” She smiled. “But the love I’ve found with you. I want to feel this for the rest of my life. I want you forever.”
“Reid, I—”
“You don’t have to say anything. I only wanted to tell you how I felt.”
She hugged him, wrapping her arms around him tight. “I’m glad you told me. At least now I know that I’m not the only one in love.”
He grasped her shoulders to make her look at him. “What was that?”
She smiled. “I love you, too,” she said. “I have for a while and I think that was really the reason I was so upset when I found you that night at the motorcycle shop. I’d given you my trust, but also my heart. I didn’t want to lose that.”
“Ah, baby, you won’t.” He dug into his pocket and pulled out a black box. He opened it and she couldn’t breathe, couldn’t speak. But when he dropped to his knees and presented the ring to her, asking, “Brynn Sloan, will you marry me?” She thought she would faint.
“Oh, my God,” she finally managed. “Are you serious?”
“I’ve never been more serious. I want you, Brynn. I want you forever and always.”
Tears in her eyes, she covered her mouth, muttering, “Yes. I’ll marry you.”
As he rose to take her into his arms, a roar of applause sounded around them and several congratulations came from familiar faces. Luke, Layla, Jeremy, Zerina, Jason, and Sam were all there hugging them and wishing them all the best.
Brynn’s chest exploded. She couldn’t be happier. She turned to Reid. “You asked them to come?”
He nodded.
“What if I had said no?”
He pulled her close, kissing her once, before he told her, “There was no way I was going to let that happen. You and I belong together and you know it just like I do. We’ve always been meant for each other.”
She felt weightless as he held her. “You certainly are confident.”
Then his gaze grew serious. “There is one thing, though,” he muttered against her cheek. “Our parents.”
She laughed. “I’m not worried. My parents will love you.”
He smiled. “I’m sure my mom would dig it if you showed up in that—”
She smacked him on the arm, knowing he was going to tell her to wear the vixen outfit he considered her most naughty. “Not. Gonna. Happen.” She kissed him. “I want her to like me, not worry that I’m a stripper.”
He chuckled. “Right. That might only be something for me then.”
She wrapped her arms around him. “Speaking of you. How long before we dump the crowd and celebrate your victory?”
His lopsided grin melted her straight to her core. “I gave Luke money so everyone could bowl for an hour. They’ll never miss us.”
She smiled wide, feeling the rush of excitement consume her. “Good,” she whispered in his ear. “I really want to test out those bikes in your garage as soon as possible.”
He groaned, nuzzling against her. “Me, too.”
