“Oh, this is fun,” he laughed, handing her his cocktail. Sasha took a huge gulp, finding it was nothing more than a Shirley Temple.

“What kind of drink is this?” she asked.

“I’m just a wittle baby and want something sweet,” he said in a baby voice.

“I need you to do something else for me,” Sasha said.

“I’m just a wittle baby. What can a little boy like me do for a big girl like you?” he said in an even more dramatic baby voice.

“I’m going to need the money upfront,” she told him, knowing damn well that she was going to hop on out of there as soon as she got the chance.

“Oh, the big girl is scary! Better give her what she wants!” he said, handing over a thick envelope. Sasha was relieved that he had clearly given her more than the cheap Greg did.

“Great, thanks. Now the big girl has to use the little girl’s room. Don’t do anything too naughty until I’m back!” she joked, grabbing her leftovers not trusting any of her personal belongings with that creepy man.

She walked toward the kitchen, seeing where the food came out. She saw her server holding a plate of shrimp and stopped her before she walked to the table.

“Is that mine?” Sasha asked, pointing to the plate of shrimp.

“Yeah, I was just taking it to the table actually,” the server said, looking at her a bit strange.

“Well I’ll actually just take it now,” Sasha said, grabbing the plate from her hands, opening one of the containers in her bag, and dumping the shrimp in. “Thanks!”

Sasha scurried out the front door, going unnoticed by Paul. She felt a little guilty for ditching the date, but she really wasn’t sure that she would have been able to handle any more of his creepy baby talk. It might not have been right for her to take the money, but it also wasn’t right for Paul to make her feel so gross throughout the date. She just wanted to go home and eat all the food that had been continually interrupted by bad dates.

Sasha was just far enough from home that it was a bit of a walk, but at the same time, a little too close to justify taking a cab. It was a nice breezy night, and she usually enjoyed having the chance to check out the sights of the city on a slow walk instead of just through a car’s window. Still, she wished she wasn’t wearing the tall heels she’d grabbed for the night. Her feet were aching, and she was ready to get them off as soon as possible.

Her bag was heavy with food, and she was excited to think about how she would get to binge eat once she got home. She was happy that she had been able to make some money that night, but at the same time, all three dates were so bad that she just wanted to forget the day ever happened. She realized that finding Ian was a lucky chance and that there certainly weren’t any other sugar daddies out there like him.

Part of her didn’t even want to have a client again, another anxious thought that made her scared for the future. She didn’t have a way to make money and hardly any skills to get her a good job. It seemed like getting paid to go on dates was the only thing Sasha was good at, even though it certainly made her miserable as well.

She had to ask herself what was worse. Waiting on rude customers all day at a job that barely paid or going on dates with rude men that paid a lot. It seemed like there was a clear choice, but still, on every date she had been on that day, she couldn’t help but think of Ian. She saw his gorgeous face whenever she looked across the table at her other dates. She couldn’t get him out of her head, and it was driving her crazy. She wondered what he might be doing.

She decided to stop at a quick convenience store to get some candy. She had plenty of food to eat, but no dessert, and that was certainly a must. As she entered the store, she immediately saw a tall man with red hair in the aisle ahead of her. Her heart fluttered. She walked straight to the other aisle and stood there for a second, trying to listen in to see what he was talking about. She heard a girl and boy laughing and giggling, a sound that made her heart drop.

She walked to the end of the aisle and peeked around the corner, wanting to get a good look at who Ian was flirting with. When she saw the couple, they were kissing pretty passionately, not caring that they were standing in the chip aisle. Sasha’s heart broke and she froze right there, unable to move. When the couple pulled away from each other, Sasha instantly realized that it wasn’t Ian at all, but a rather young boy that was likely a high school student. He caught Sasha staring, causing the girl to turn around and look at Sasha too.

They gave her a weird look and walked away, holding each other’s hands and getting away from the awkward scenario.

Sasha grabbed a half pint of ice cream and a few candy bars and headed to the counter. The cashier gave her a strange look, but Sasha didn’t care about the checkout lady’s judgment of her snack choices for the night. It was clear that Sasha was self-medicating with sweets to anyone who saw her stash, however.

She made her way out of the store and started to slowly walk home, even though her food was getting cold. Her stomach was tight, incredibly stuffed with food from all of her dates. Still, she could smell the food from the bag and it started to make her feel sick. Sasha realized that she might have eaten just a bit too much.

Normally she would have just ordered a lot of drinks but having the opportunity to actually have a decent meal is what intrigued Sasha the most. She had been eating cheap dollar store food for too long, and smelling the restaurant plates and hearing the sizzle of the food cooking was irresistible. She always liked to eat, but she had been particularly hungry that day. Now that she was full, she was starting to regret stuffing herself so much.

  Chapter8

Sasha walked into the apartment, stumbled to the living room, and slowly fell on the floor. Giselle instantly started laughing over the rom-com movie that was on. She was playing the movie so loud that Sasha could hear it from the hallway.

“Rough night?” Giselle laughed as Sasha picked herself up from the floor. She kicked off her shoes and took her bra off from under her dress, sitting down next to Giselle on the couch, placing the bag of food on the coffee table.

“What were you thinking setting me up on those dates? Really, girl? Really?” Sasha laughed as she set out the containers.

“Girl, you were pretty desperate, and you made that money, right?” Giselle said, grabbing one of the containers. “What do we have here?”

“I got a steak in one, nachos in the other, and seafood mac and cheese. Oh, and there’s some shrimp tossed in there somewhere,” Sasha told her.

“Greg texted me and said he had an amazing time. He wants to meet you again! Isn’t that so cool, sis?” Giselle said, opening the containers and picking around.

“Are you joking? He left like right after we got the food and didn’t talk to me the whole time. He was also rude as hell,” Sasha said. How could Greg really have thought that their date was a good time? If there hadn’t been food, Sasha would have been out of there so fast. The mac and cheese was the only thing that kept her going.

“Yeah, he’s kind of quiet. But super rich. Like extremely rich,” Giselle said with a mouthful of mac and cheese.

“Well tonight I had three first dates that were also last dates. I ran out on Paul too. That guy’s a total creep,” Sasha said.

“Yeah, I kind of figured it might be awful, but Alexa says he gives her ten grand a month just to take care of him like a baby,” Giselle said laughing.

“Ugh not letting you set me up on dates again,” Sasha said standing up. “I got to get the heck out of this dress!”

Sasha walked to her room and changed from a dress to shorts and a t-shirt quick. Her normal night time t-shirt was usually pretty big on her, but this time, she had to stretch it a bit to get it to fit across her hips. She started to regret eating all that food that night. She walked back into the living room, trying to resist binge eating the rest of the leftovers.

“Girl, I’m only telling you this as a friend and out of the kindness of my heart, but you’re getting a little thick,” Gi
selle said, laughing as she grabbed the nachos from across the coffee table.

“No, sis, you’re totally right, I’m not mad at all,” Sasha said. “After I help you finish the food, I’m going on a diet, I promise.”

“It’s just weird ’cause like, you haven’t really been eating a lot lately, you know? You’re always cooking rice or like noodles or some real light shit,” Giselle said, munching on a nacho and opening another leftover box. “Oh, girl, are the shrimps in there? You really know how to hook a girl up, sis!”

“Yeah, shrimp,” Sasha said, beginning to sniff the air, the fishy aroma filling the room. “Those, do those smell kind of funny?”

“No girl, these are tasty,” Giselle said, popping a shrimp out of the leftover container and into her mouth. Sasha felt like she could almost hear the squish of the fish between her teeth and instantly felt sick. She ran to the bathroom and threw up, none of the leftovers that night sitting well with her.

She rinsed out her mouth and brushed her teeth, not even wanting the candy that she’d just bought. It was the second time she’d thrown up that day, the first time being immediately after she woke up. She didn’t feel sick otherwise, but the smell of the shrimp really threw her off. It smelled good at the restaurant, but she quickly changed her mind once Giselle started eating them. She walked back into the living room.

“You need to smash those fast and get them up out of my face real quick before I lose the rest of my stomach,” Sasha told her, sitting across the living room on a chair instead of next to Giselle with all the food.

“Girl, what’s up with that? You drunk?” Giselle asked.

“No, actually, I didn’t drink at all after the first date. I just wanted to eat. But those shrimps, man, that was nasty,” Sasha said, trying as hard as possible not to think about the shrimp sitting inside Giselle’s body.

“Sasha, when’s the last time you got your period?” Giselle asked, and Sasha’s heart stopped.

“Shut up. Don’t say that. Shut up,” Sasha responded.

“Well? Sis, you’re throwing up, you’re hungry as fuck, and you’re gaining a little weight even though you’re not eating much. Have you had your period since the last time you had sex?” Giselle asked. Sasha just shook her head. “Hold on, I got you.”

Giselle walked into the bathroom. Sasha couldn’t even use her brain to think. She put her hand on her stomach and felt a deep pit in her body. She started shaking her leg as Giselle walked out of the bathroom holding a small box. “Take it.”

“You already have one of these?” Sasha asked, grabbing the pregnancy test from Giselle’s hand.

“Frank doesn’t like condoms and I don’t like birth control. It makes me moody,” Giselle said, weirding Sasha out. She really did not want to know that much information about her roommate’s love life. “Just take it to be sure, you know?”

Giselle was right to give Sasha a pregnancy test. She hadn’t gotten her period since the night she was with Ian at the parking garage. She had left her birth control pills in her purse in the car as well, meaning that she totally forgot to take a pill that day. After she ended things with Ian, she decided that she wasn’t going to take the pill anymore as she didn’t want to date for a while anyways. It made her moody as well.

It was all making sense, and Sasha wasn’t so sure she’d be able to handle the results. She hadn’t taken a pregnancy test before, and it wasn’t easy to aim her pee directly at the part that needed to get wet, but she had plenty to use after chugging water after water on her date.

She put the cap back on and set it on the sink. She washed her hands and looked at the test for an early hint at least of what the results might be. She walked back into the living room and tossed the test at Giselle.

“I can’t look,” she told her friend, Giselle jumping up,imagining where the pregnancy test was just moments ago.

“Ew, you can’t just go throwing these things around!” Giselle said, picking up the test anyway.

They sat there as a commercial for a shampoo started playing. It was the same shampoo that the lady had tried to use a coupon for at the store, and that gave Sasha a horrible feeling, flashing back to the fight at the store.

“Okay, I think I’m starting to see some lines,” Giselle said.

“Lines? More than one? Doesn’t that mean,” Sasha said.

“Well, like a line, like a spot or something. Like something’s showing up,” Giselle responded.

“A spot? What does that mean? Did I do it wrong?” Sasha cried, standing up and beginning to pace.

“Okay, just chill out, just wait a second,” Giselle said, staring at the test as Sasha continued to pace.

Giselle’s mouth dropped, and Sasha looked at her. “Is it positive? What? What? Tell me!”

“You’re pregnant,” Giselle said as quietly as possible.

“I’m what? What? I’m…” Sasha stopped pacing and sat down.

“You’re pregnant, hon,” Giselle said. Sasha just stared at her, partially wishing she had done this alone. She didn’t really think she could have been pregnant. She had only been with Ian twice so far. She was decent with her birth control schedule every other day, though she certainly had times that she would mess up the flow occasionally. “Whose is it?”

“Ian,” Sasha responded closing her eyes. As soon as she said his name, she started to cry. She had no idea how he would take it.

She didn’t end things well with him. She had simply told him that she had reached her date limit with him and felt it was best to discontinue a business relationship. She didn’t even hug or kiss him. She would have done it through text to make things even harsher, but she needed to get her purse back. Ian hadn’t said anything, and it broke Sasha’s heart. Of course, she’d get the chance to talk to him again, knowing that he was the one who deserved to find out about the baby.

  Chapter9

“Hi! Hi, how are you?” Sasha said as sweetly as possible once she opened her apartment door, allowing Ian to walk in.

“Hey,” he said softly without smiling. Sasha could see that he was probably still hurt about their breakup.

“Your hair,” he said, referring to her dark curls. She had it pulled back in a small bun, a few baby hairs and soft curls framing her face. She was wearing a baggy sweatshirt and leggings, keeping it natural. She didn’t want the two of them to get distracted. “It looks really nice.”

“Thanks. Summer’s ending, so I guessed it was a good time to switch back. I wasn’t so sure I liked it that much anyways,” she said, self-consciously touching her hair.

“I think you look beautiful both ways,” he said, looking down. Sasha’s heart started beating faster as she gave glanced up at him.

“Thank you for coming over,” she told him.

“It’s nice to see you again,” he said, giving her a small smile.

“Here, let’s sit down,” she told him, leading him to the couch. The couch was small, so as they sat down at the same time, both of their knees banged into each other, Sasha feeling the pain as his legs were so much larger and longer than hers.

  “Sorry!” he told her quickly.

“No, I’m fine, it’s my fault,” she replied, awkwardly laughing and rubbing her knee.

Someone once told her that it took twice as long to get over someone as you were together. Or maybe they said it took half as long. Either way, Sasha realized she couldn’t say for sure that she was completely over Ian after seeing him again. It was clear from the way that he was moving his body he wasn’t over her either.

She didn’t even know where to start. She had his baby growing inside her body, and he had no idea. She was still unsure about the entire situation, not even having gone to the doctor yet. She didn’t want it to be real just yet, but talking to him might set that in stone.

It had only been a few days since she’d found out she was pregnant, and her emotions were at an all-time high. Her first thought was to have an abortion. She didn’t have a job, and she wasn’
t in a relationship. Sasha never saw herself having her first child in a position like that. She felt it wasn’t the right life to bring a child into. She knew that Ian could easily be there financially, but he could just as easily want nothing to do with the child. Would she be able to raise the kid alone if that were the case?

Still, Sasha liked herself. She had been through a lot, from getting bullied in elementary school to sexually harassed by men who didn’t know how to treat women right. Despite everything she had been through, she had turned out okay, and a lot of that had to do with her mom. She was a single mom, and even though she was an addict on and off, there was a point when she was sober, and she and Sasha had a wonderful relationship. Her mom knew how to take care of kids, she just didn’t know how to take care of herself. Because of that, Sasha made self-care a priority. She also knew that if her mom could do it, she could do it too.

There was a part of Sasha that felt her baby and didn’t want to let it go. She knew keeping it was what she wanted, no matter what Ian had to say. She knew she would be able to love and take care of a child. She had always wanted a baby, and honestly, now that she didn’t want to date any more, she thought this might be her last chance to have a baby. It didn’t matter if Ian didn’t want to be a father; she could do it on her own if she had to. Still, she knew that he deserved to hear that he was going to become a father.

“I’m sorry if things ended a bit…” she stuttered. Sasha didn’t even know how to explain what had happened between the two of them. She had freaked out, and he got his heart broken. She just didn’t want to see herself get hurt again, but in that process, she hurt him. He never explicitly said that he was falling for her, but she knew from the look on his face what she had done. She wasn’t sure if she could forgive herself, let alone if he would be able to forgive her. Not that he needed to. She was sure he had moved on at this point.

She had no interest in pursuing a relationship. She and Ian had a strong connection, but she didn’t want to get too in her emotions during her pregnancy. It could be easy to fall for someone or loathe someone, so it was best to approach it as a co-parenting relationship rather than opening the door for their relationship.
