He grabbed the soap and a loofah and began to wash me, adjusting the rainfall showerhead above us, so the water direction was at our shoulders. The calming scent of eucalyptus combined with the steam of the shower, instantly relaxed me.

“I know you miss Abigail and everyone at the ranch,” Gabriel said, while he massaged the body wash over my skin.

“So, I decided that we will spend a few months here at the cabin and a few months at the cottage on the ranch.”

I wanted to ask Gabriel if he would consider this compromise months ago, but I hadn’t mustered up the courage to bring it up with him yet.

Gabriel kissed me, nudging me to spin around while he pressed his lips to my shoulder. His hard cock dug into my thigh. He slid his fingers up the line of my spine until his hand settled around the back of my neck, holding me in position.

  “Two homes?” I smiled.

  “Yes, two homes.”

“Thank you, Gabriel.” I pressed a soft kiss to his lips while he tipped over my shoulder and slid into me.

I headed into the master bedroom, across the plush carpet and sat on the edge of the bed. Gabriel toweled himself off and slipped into a pair of black boxer briefs. I slipped under the comforter and pulled back the sheets that were soft against my naked skin. Gabriel then slid in behind me, wrapping his arms around my growing stomach. I was enjoying his light breaths that tickled my neck. We both stared out of the huge skylight that looked directly out to the stars above.

“It’s wonderful to have Abigail and Jacob here.”

“Yeah, it is,” he said quietly, seeming deep in thought. “What’s bothering you, Lily?” he asked, kissing me softly on the cheek.

“Nothing, really. I’m just a little confused.”

  “About what?”

“I thought you said that we would keep everything a secret, Gabriel—to the grave.”

“Okay,” he said, pressing me to go on.

“Jacob stopped me when I was setting the table this evening and said that he was

sorry.” I paused. “That he was sorry that Nina was dead but it was all for the best.”

He sat up slowly and moved to sit on the edge of the bed.

“Why would you tell him, Gabriel? Why did you tell him what happened?”

He made a long sigh, staring at the floor. Then I think I heard a bit of a chuckle escape his throat. “Lily, I didn’t tell Jacob anything,” he said slowly. “Not a word.”

  PROLOGUE

  Lily

  Today was my birthday.

I stared at myself naked in the silver-beveled mirror in front of me. I ran a hand over my large belly, turning to the side to admire my shape. I was exactly thirty-nine weeks pregnant.

Whoever was in there was ready to come out…today.

I dipped down in the soothing warm water and listened to the rippling sound as it filled the bathroom. Gabriel dimmed the lights and slipped in with me wearing only a pair of shorts that showed off his powerfully built legs. He held a high-tech stopwatch in his hand. I’d been in labor already for two hours. The contractions were close enough that it was almost time for me to bear down. He ran his hands over my shoulders massaging me while I took deep breaths, fearing the pain that was threatening to come.

“Deep breaths, baby,” Gabriel said softly against my neck.

I gazed at the picturesque view ahead of me of the snow-covered pine trees. Occasionally, I’d spot a squirrel scurrying to the top of one.

“It’s coming, Lily,” he said gripping my hand.

I squeezed his hand as hard as I could while the pain passed. After nearly forty-five minutes of intense contractions that had me almost howling in agony, Gabriel checked me and let me know that it was time to push. He was so relaxed while I was in full panic mode. I knelt, bracing myself against the side of the bathtub.

“Are you ready?” he asked running a hand over my back while I shivered from the pain.

“One, two, three, push, Lily, baby. Push,” he directed, while I gripped his hand when he hovered over me.

I relaxed, taking deep breaths, while he massaged my back.

  “Again, Lily,” he said.

The tears flowing down my cheeks were thick and heavy. I knew it would all be worth it, if I could only get through this.

“One, two, three, push, Lily,” he said softly.

I intensified the push, gritting my teeth, feeling the small body moving slowly through mine.

“Stop, stop,” he whispered, checking the position of the baby.

  “I can see the head.”

I turned towards him, noticing the smile in his watery eyes. I shifted myself a little while Gabriel moved to put his hands between my legs.

“Come on, Lily, you’re doing fantastic.”

I mustered a small laugh through the incredible pain I was in.

  “One, two, three, push.”

I pushed and cried out when I felt the head slide out.

“Push, Lily, again. Don’t stop!” he said in a high-pitched voice which gave away his excitement.

Shaking uncontrollably, I gritted my teeth and pushed again as the life I’d been carrying for the last nine months introduced itself to the world.

I smiled, collapsing in the bathtub as he held the baby in his hands. Tears fell from his brown eyes as he cleared the baby’s mouth and nose.

Gabriel moved through the red water and placed her gingerly in my hands. She squirmed, cried, and rooted her mouth for my breast. Immediately, I breastfed her as he moved around to do the rest.

Our little girl weighed six pounds, nine ounces and was twenty-one and a half inches long. We decided to name her Evangeline Jessica Preston.

Today was my birthday, I smiled to myself. Now it would remind me of something good and pure.
