The Walking Dead: Descent

Page 30

by Robert Kirkman

  “Bob, I can’t—”

“Yes, you can.” He gives her a friendly squeeze, another reassuring pat. “You’re Lilly Caul, and you can do pretty much anything you put your mind to.”

She doesn’t say anything, just stares at him for another moment.

Then she turns and once again gazes out at the dark reaches of the tunnel.

Through the screen of chain link, way out in the depths of the main tunnel, in the grainy darkness, like ghosts, the other tributaries branch off in opposite directions, the legacy of fleeing slaves, calling out to Lilly, a dark heritage of pain and suffering and loneliness and desolation, a low rumble of voices from the grave, whispering from long ago: Run … run away … run for your life!

Lilly senses a response forming deep inside her, a secret voice, felt more than heard, triggered by fight-or-flight instinct.

  She’ll stay.

  And fight.
