I’d like to relate one last experience that really hammered this message home for me.
It involved my son, Hayden, who plays the trumpet in his sixth-grade school band. One evening there was a concert planned, and Hayden was told to wear a particular uniform—black shoes, black pants, white shirt, and tie. But Hayden is anti-uniform. He’s anti a lot of things, actually, because he’s willful and unique and independent-minded. The night of the concert, he insisted on wearing his red sneakers and no tie. We went back and forth about it, but in the end, I gave in, and he wore his red sneakers and no tie.
Garrett and I settled into the auditorium for the concert, not really sure what to expect. Then the children came out (all of them in their matching outfits, except one) and began playing a beautiful song with African rhythms. Honestly, I was floored. Some children played clarinets, and for a while the lovely sound of clarinets filled the auditorium. Then the clarinets gave way to the flutes and in turn the flutes gave way to the drums.
And then Hayden and his fellow trumpeters played their instruments, and they were so good, too, and then all the sounds came together, everyone playing at once, and the result was breathtaking—a true symphony of distinct sounds and movements and melodies all blending to create something bigger and bolder and more beautiful than any one instrument could produce. Watching Hayden play the trumpet in his red sneakers, and hearing him mesh so wonderfully with his bandmates to produce something so magnificent, moved me to tears.
As I listened to the music, I had a download from the universe: We are all distinct instruments, playing our separate beautiful notes, and it is our job to play them as best we can—but when we all play together, we produce a magnificent symphony that lifts us all and makes sense of our individual roles. It is only together that we can create something bigger than ourselves, something truly astounding.
And so right there, in a middle school auditorium, the beauty of our interconnectedness shone through. If we all play our best notes—if we all choose our highest life path—then together we can create something beautiful. But we’ve all got to practice our notes. We are all here to learn the same lessons of love and forgiveness and acceptance. If we practice together, if we help each other learn, then we discover how we can change and enrich the world around us in the most magical ways.
The signs are there. The messages are there. The butterflies and dragonflies and hummingbirds and playing cards and rainbows and soda bread and trees with hearts are all there, waiting for us to see them. Our loved ones on the Other Side are hard at work trying to steer us to happiness, and our Teams of Light are plotting ways to move us onto our highest paths. These things are happening around us every day, and it is up to us to be open to them—to be mindful of them.
Because when we are mindful, we will see things we haven’t been able to see before. And once we see them, we will never be able to unsee them—nor would we ever want to.
