Kiss Me, I'm Undead

She started to cry then. I grabbed her some tissue out of the bathroom and returned, putting an arm around the small child that was lured into a situation that never should be happening.
“It’s okay, honey.” It wasn’t, but that’s what people say, right?
“The butcher said you’d find her, and you’d fuck up the guys with the brand tattoos. Is that true? Will you do that?” She looked at me with glistening, doll-like eyes. Pleading.
I breathed in a slow, deep inhalation. “I think maybe my friends and I can figure out something.” I looked to the hallway. “Oh, hey. There’s one now.”
Freddie stood, leaning one shoulder against the wall. He had on a white t-shirt and the gray sweatpants that were my favorite. There were deep lines around his brown eyes, and the remnants of a million smiles around his mouth. His once dark hair was now salt and pepper, making him look every bit a motherfucking DILF.
“Freddie, this young lady needs our help finding her kidnapped sister, and I promised her we would.”
Freddie winked at Mari. “Of course. Good thing, too. I was getting hungry.”
Acknowledgements
I learned in this past year that support is necessary in almost everything you do. For too long, I looked in the wrong places for support. I forgot that I had people that were rooting for me all along. Some of those people reminded me that I had to root for myself most of all.
Marla, you’ve taught me so much. You push me to love myself more than I look for outside love. You remind me that the past does not control my future. You’ve shown me how to reform myself into someone much different today than I was when we first met.
Tara, I could not have done any of this without you. Why did it take us so long to become this close? I was more than likely pushing you away like Kayla did Jillesa. When I let you in, I flourished in the same way. You’ve been my rock and my cheerleader. You tell me when I’m wrong without a second thought. You’ve given me better ideas for this book than I could have come up with myself. You’re an incredible editor and an even better friend.
Jennifer, girl you are just the best! I wish I could conjure up a Freddie just for you. I’ll keep practicing that magic until I can make it happen. Thank you for making me feel like my work is amazing enough to be read by one of our favorite authors. One day, I may get up the courage to ask her.
Chuck, how long have you been in my corner? Good lord, man. I think you’ve been supporting my work longer than anyone. I’m so lucky to have you as a friend.
To the rest of the KMIU Squad: Leigh, Veronica, and Virginia—Thank you for beta reading this book, chapter by chapter as I wrote it, and giving me your feedback. You have helped me so much.
Finally, I have to thank Angela James. After several rejections from other editors and agents, you took a chance on this crazy genre mash-up novel. I never got the final version to you before “the shit” went down, but if I had, I know you would have handled it gloriously.
