  “A boring mortal boy?”

“I wouldn’t say boring.” She blushed before admitting, “You make my heart flutter, and that hasn’t happened in decades.”

  “Good to know.”

He looked pleased with himself, maybe a little too pleased. Part of her was annoyed by his reaction. She hated it when boys thought they had the upper-hand with her. Instinct told her to walk away, but she wanted something different than what she’d had in the past. Matt Donovan made her weak in the knees. She wasn’t about to give that up.

“Would you...never mind.” She shook her head.

  “It’s okay,” Matt said. “Ask.”

“Would you turn for me like Trick did for Dani?” She mentally back-peddled after seeing his shocked expression. “Never mind. I shouldn’t have asked. Sometimes I’m too pushy. I’ll have to work on that.”

“I’ll tell you what. Let’s have dinner first and save the hard questions for another day.”

She pressed her lips together and took a step backward. It might take her a while to get used to dating a human boy. In truth, she was looking forward to the experience. She hoped she didn’t blow it.

“Here,” Matt said. He reached around her and grabbed the doorknob. “Let me get that for you.”

“Cute and a gentleman. What else could a girl ask for?”

Cowboy was upset that Trick refused to leave town with them. She didn’t mind staying in Reno. In fact, she was hoping Trick would keep standing up to Cowboy. Knowing her stubborn friend, he would refuse to leave town without the boy. That meant she had plenty of time to get to know Matt Donovan.

  Worked for her.

  Epilogue

  Jersey

While the vampires celebrated on the other side of town, Jersey showed Isobel around his secret mansion hidden beneath the small house he’d purchased. The thing had been built with the help of magic, wraiths, and a small army of werewolves. Although Oberon had warned Jersey not to make anyone else like him, he had infected many people during the last few months. In the past he had chosen participants carefully; he hadn’t wanted to gift just anyone with werewolf powers. But stressful times meant he had to let go of preconceived notions. It didn’t matter if the people he picked would make good werewolves or not. They would serve him, and they would probably die doing it. That was all he wanted.

Jersey showed Isobel to his favorite room, a replica of the office he had built in Nebraska, back when he’d thought his destiny was entwined with Jack Creed’s. Now he believed he was meant to mentor the brother instead. Trick Donovan had the Dark Wizard’s power, and Jersey couldn’t wait to see what the boy would do with it.

  “This is nice,” Isobel said.

She perched on the edge of the desk in the same way his former assistant had done on several occasions. It unnerved him. Refusing to show emotion, he walked to the well-stocked bookshelves.

“Feel free to read whatever you want,” Jersey said. “Be sure to take care of the books you borrow, and always return them to their rightful place.”

“Can I ask you a question?”

He fumed in silence. Why did people insist on asking if they could ask questions? It was redundant and a huge waste of time.

Isobel asked, “Exactly how powerful are you? Are you more powerful than Oberon?”

“No one is more powerful than Oberon. He has ruled over the Faerie Realm for thousands of years. Many have tried to kill him and failed. If anyone is truly immortal, it is that treacherous creature.”

Isobel nodded. “Then why work against him?”

He stood tall and puffed his chest out. “I did not come back to life and become a werewolf again to take orders from a low-life faerie convinced of his own superiority.”

“But if you can’t kill him—”

“Trick will do it. I don’t know how or when or where, but he is more resourceful than his brother, and now he has immortality to back up the power.”

  “You sound so sure.”

“Everything else went according to my plan. Well, almost everything. I was hoping he would agree to become like us, but being a vampire is almost as good. Perhaps he and I will strike up a friendship to rival the one I enjoyed with Jack... until I have to kill him, of course.”

Isobel gaped at him. “You’re taking credit for the Shadow Faerie?”

Ignoring the surprise in her voice, he carefully picked what he would share. Despite what she believed, Isobel was not his partner. She was a pawn in his game, just another puppet to be controlled.

“They are worried about Oberon, but I am the one they should fear. I was, am, and will always be the villain of this story. Let them destroy Oberon. Then I shall close the doorway to the other realm, build my new army, and destroy all vampires.” He grinned. “Life is good.”
